This teacher, a class sponsor, helped our class throughout our years in high school. In English, we learned from her and laughed with her. She is our friend and helper ... we love her. Now that we face the end of our daily life at St. John's, this special person re- mains in our minds and hearts. This is why we, the class of 1978, dedicate the 1978 Blue Devil to you . . . To many fans it was a long, hard season; but to others, especially the seniors, it went by all too quickly. Many had cause for disappointment, but the Devil spirit carried throughout the season, and that is what counts. The Devils had the will to win, but lacked the experience to beat some of the better teams. The highlight of the season was the game against the Red Foxes of Hartsville. A psyched up Devil team came from behind to win the game on Danny Stokes' field goal. The Devils walked away proudly with a 16-14 victory. iptain β€” George Manos rβ€˜- Β« _o-Captam β€” Martin Priest eh Football Scoreboard Football if g (L to R) D. Priest Stokes, G. Stokes, N. The Blue Imps experienced a year of hard work, and with their enthusiasm and determination, they were able to come out on top. Under the leadership of their three coaches, Head Coach Richard Robbins, Stan Drawdy, and Mike Stokes, the Imps showed great promise for the future. With each game, every player gained a little more experience. This exper- ience will help each one improve their ability and help them to achieve their potential. Senior coaches Mark Johnson, George Manos, Scott Spencer, and Mark Willis began practice confidently as they worked to reunite the previous year's Junior team. Junior coaches Chip Auman, Tony Blackmon and Glen Huggins worked diligently to whip a newly recruited Junior team into shape in just two weeks. The game turned into an offensive battle. Senior backs Rosanna Edens and Lorie Patterson, and Juniors Pat Thomas and Terri Weaver, each scored points for their team. When the clock finally ran out, the Juniors managed to be on top 16-14. To dismay of the Seniors, the Juniors had pulled off the biggest upset in several years. 51 Row 1: Deanna Freeman, Kim Edwards, Row 2: Cely Anne Baker, Mary Wil- liams, Liz Edens, Terri Langley, Row 3: Lynn Koon, Sherri Johnson, Marv Harris. Girl's Tennis Team Has Best Year Ever The 1977 Girl's Varsity tennis team showed how tennis should be played. Ending the season with a 8-4 record, the girls had the best season than any other team in many years. The girls had to work hard to end on a winning note. Their hard practice paid off throughout the season and at the State tournament. The state tournament for 3-A schools proved to be challenging for the young team. Coming in 10th out of 21 schools, the girls had three singles players and one doubles team to do well. Sherri Johnson and Kim Edwards went to the semi- finals while Lynn Koon went to the quarter-finals, and the doubles team of Johnson and Edwards also went to the semi-finals. Loosing the seniors, Mary Harris and Lynn Koon, No. 1 and No. 2, and manager, Rosanna Edens will be a great deficit to the team. What I could do with this J racquet! In an exciting game against archrival, the Hartsville Red Foxes, the Devils came out on top with a 56-53 victory. Though the 1977-1978 basketball season was based on Devil Defense, the new gym and the new school instilled a lot of pride in this basket- ball team, which proved to be the key to our success for the 1977-78 basketball season. 24 12 22 25 20 35 32 21 34 41 23 30 55 Senior: George Manos tVβ€”β€”β– gil 57 Tommy Britt An alumus of St. John's High School, Tommy Btitt remains a vital part of our school com- munity. To prepare the 1977-78 Girls' Varsity Basket- ball team for the upcoming season, many hours of dedicated and hard working practices were required. With the new members filling out most of the squad, the returning players had their work cut out for them. They had the task of showing the inexperienced players the trials and tribulations of varsity basketball. The motto of the girls team was Attitude Team. Everyone on the team was compatible. The teams' attitude was one of dedication and enthusiasm through- out the year. Opening the season with a decisive 62-29 victory over Marion, our team brought the new gym its first victory. Being in a new gym, the Devilettes were out to bring many victories to their home court. In conference play, it was rough going against teams like Wilson and An- drew Jackson, but the Devilettes' love for basket- ball pulled them through with a successful sea- son! Although the primary function of a teacher is to educate students academically, teachers also assume an important role in molding todays' students into citizens of tomorrow. Being a friend as well as a teacher requires a special type of person. Whether a student needs help in understanding a subject or help in understand- ing life β€” these special people are always will- ing to assist. To be a teacher involves so much more than teaching. To some students a teacher is an advisor, phsyco-analyst, leader, mother or father figure. The list is infinite involving the duties of the teacher. They are interested in each individual and do their best to give stu- dents a knowledge of the subject they are teaching. More than 500,000 tons of waste paper are recycled every year. From that, we make more than 300 specialty grades of paper. Which we use, in turn, to make inexpensive products that replace expensive ones. Paper cones, for the textile industry, that replaced expensive and cumbersome wooden ones. Fibre cores for paper and plastics that replace expensive metal cores. Composite cans for motor oil and frozen juice concentrate that replace metal cans. Concrete forms and pitch-impregnated fibre pipe for the construction industry. And underground enclosures for the utility industry. And hundreds of other paper products that fill specific needs of industry. Products that cut costs, improve efficiency, make new ideas possible. So remember, when you look at tomorrow's headlines, every cloud has a silver lining. Sonoco Products Company R.B. POND CONSTRUCTION CO. Carrie Chapman Catt must have had yearbook editors in mind when she wrote this. During the past school year, we have worked diligently to produce a yearbook that would capture the special moments of the year. We have given our time to the just cause β€” you the student body. Though the times have been tough, there were many who pulled us through. Our advisor. Miss Wilson, has been indispensible and without her, we would have been lost. John Fede and Lee Freeman, our photographers, have also been great helps. During deadlines, they worked overtime to get the pictures we needed. Buzz Pleming, our representative, saved our lives during his regular visits. We would also like to thank all the administration for permitting us to interrupt during classes. But most of all we thank you, the student body. Without you none of these trials and tribulations would have been necessary. Without these, we would not have grown into the more responsible and patient people; neither would we have the satisfaction that we had contributed ourselves to a good cause. Nearing the end of our Senior Year at St. John's, we feel that being editors of the yearbook has not only been an honor, but also a pleasure, bringing us much happiness. .
