During the excitement of halftime, Beth Lowder was crowned our 1976 Homecoming Queen and Lou Hart was honored as Football Sweet- heart. The Sophomore Class won the trophy for the most outstanding float. The themes for the floats were: Happy Days - Sen- iors; The Quest - Juniors; The Magi- cian - Sophomores; The Bionic Devil - Freshmen. Auditors - John Bethea Phillip Campbell The theme for the annual Miss Blue Devil Pageant was I'm Impressed. The Pageant turned out to be a very successful event for both the Annual Staff and the Student Council, co-sponsors. Fourteen talented and beautiful young ladies participated in the areas of sportswear, tal- ent, and evening gown competition. These young ladies were: Mickey McKay, Janine Langley, Christal Johnson, Carol Jett, Cheryl Dowdy, Beth Morse, Emily Garris, Monica Godfrey, Ivy Adams, Susan Ritter, Tara Powers, Diana Williamson, Jam Smyre, and Robin Slater. One of SJH's own teachers was the Master of Ceremo- nies this year: Mr. Ernie Harrell. Special entertainment was presented by Danny Cohen, a student at SJH. He was accompanied by Mrs. Pat Alexander on the piano. This evening was a very special one for Miss Cheryl Dowdy, a Junior at SJH, who was crowned Miss Blue Devil 1976 by Miss Diane Hudson, the 1975 Miss Blue Devil. First runner-up was Miss Jan Smyre, a Senior, and 2nd runner-up was Miss Monica Godfrey, a Sophomore. The most difficult decision for the judges was the talent com- petition. Miss Christal Johnson won this honor by doing a baton routine. DEVILS 5AAA CHAMPS The Devils began practice in early August en- during hot sun to get in shape for the upcoming football season. Striving to be champs was the name of the game for the Devils. Each player practiced everyday to make this season tops. It wasn't long before the season ended and the Devils had captured the Conference Crown for the third year straight as Conference Champs. The Devils worked their way to the state playoffs meeting the Hanahan Hawks from Charleston and losing a hard game 7-6. Although ready for their first season game with the South Florence Bruins, the Devils were defeat- ed by one point. They came back the next week and rode over the West Florence Knights. The Devils traveled to Myrtle Beach and came home with a victory from the Sea Hawks. The Mullins Auction- eers came to Darlington, but the Devils outbid them. The Devils burned the Lugoff-Elgin Demons in the Homecoming Game. The Andrew Jackson Volunteers were outplayed by the Big Blue. Lastly, the Devils stomped the Bennettsville Gremlins. V. Football team competed well against some of the best J. V. teams in the state. Improving on last year's record of 2-5-2, the team closed out the season with a 4-5 record. Valuable experience gained this year will serve as a keystone for those who play varsity football next year. Congrat- ulations to the J. Say it one more time! 44 FOOTBALL '76 JUNIORS Who says football is for boys? After two long weeks of Powder Puff practice, the Jun- ior and Senior girls were enthusiastic about the big game and anxious to see which team would come out on top. The fashion for the night was a variety of football jerseys, ten- nis shoes, cleets, shorts and jeans. Once on the field, the realization of the game ahead led each girl to give her best effort. Winning was the main goal for each team. Confidence was the key to the game as the coaches assured the players they were win- ners. The game was kept alive, not only by the anxious players, but by the enthusiastic crowds. The game started fervently with the Jun- iors kicking off. A Senior Quarterback, Beth Lowder, set the offensive line down in a swinging gate formation, she quickly re- versed to the opposite side for a 40 yard gain. Aided by the fine blocking in the in- terior line, Roberta King drove in from the 7 yard line for the Seniors touchdown. In- spired by the expertise of Renee Martin and Rosanna Edens, the Juniors staged a come- back, never quite closing the margin. The 1976 Powder Puff Queen, Ms. Val Baldwin, sponsored by Beth Lowder, was crowned from a line of radiant beauties. The second half was inconsistant for both teams. The final point came when Roberta King crashed through the middle from the 11 yard line to make the final score 12-0. Even though the score highlighted the Seniors in victory, the Juniors also won by gaining ex- perience for their Senior year. GIRLS VARSITY TENNIS 47 Juniors Lynn Koon and Mary Harris advanced to the semi-fiirais first X flight doubles at the state competition, an were defeate'd by a toujjB team from Keena High School. GIRLS TENNIS TEAM FINISHES IN STATE AAA COMPETITION The 1976 Girls Tennis Team had a fantastic sea- son. These girls under the direction of Coach Andy Morrison finished 5th in the Class AAA Championship. Each girl practiced steadily to improve her abilities. We are fortunate to lose only one Senior player - Beth Lowder, a strong, dedicated worker. COACH NEILSON AND ROUNDBALL With Dave Neilson's coaching expertise and his motto of the three C's: CONCEN- TRATION, COMMUNICATION, and CON- SISTENCY, the varsity basketball team had developed a strong unity. At the start of the season, the team fought a hard battle in the last seconds of several games to loose by only a few points. The team unity and will- ingness to win was the strength on which the players relied. As the season pro- gressed, the team was assertive and be- came winners. With only two starters returning. Tom- my Campbell and Henry Carter, the year's second team filled the void left by the graduating seniors. The 1976-77 Junior Varsity Basketball team proved to be one of much determina- tion. Led by Coach Richard Robbins, the team demonstrated ability and promise. As the players from the Junior Varsity team progress and move on to the varsity team, the fundamentals acquired during their Junior Varsity years will be a great asset to the future varsity teams. YOUNG DEVILETTES GAIN EXPERIENCE With only two starters returning from last year's squad, the S.J. H. varsity girls relied on the efforts of some talented, but inexperienced newcomers. The girls showed steady improvement as they fought to re- present St. John's well in their new 5AAA conference. Facing tough Conference AAAA teams at the begin- ning of the season introduced the team to the type competition that they would be meeting as the confer- ence games began. Teams such as Wilson and Che- raw with their ever-powerful brand of basketball presented the young Devilettes with a challenge to persevere in hopes that they would bring winning basketball back to the hardcourts at S.J. H. Hard work and desire compiled with the never say die Blue Devil spirit should definitely make the Lady Devils a team to watch in the days to come. The squad re- turned from camp glorious in the accu- mulation of placing 2nd each night of camp in tri-state competition. b4 JUNIOR VARSITY CHEERLEADERS In past years, the JV Cheer- leaders cheered solely for JV basketball games. But when the Jr. -Hi decided not to sponsor cheerleaders for football, the girls worked hard and fast to prepare to take over in mid-sea- son. In December, a chicken bog was sponsored jointly with the Varsity to raise money to outfit the two best dressed squads in the area. Now they look as good as they cheer! 65 JR. Among these activities were Homecoming, May Day, the Mr. and Miss St. John’s Contest, and a Christmas dance. The Student Coun- cil aided the BLUE DEVIL staff in the production of the Miss Blue Devil Pageant. The various fund-raising projects of the Student Council were to raise money for an activity bus or van for the school. This year the Student Council was given an office. Though there is little space, the ’’closet serves the purpose. An important part of our quest was the ac- tivities that we participated in. It all started with magazine sales: Maybe we didn’t reach the goal, but we still did a good job. Then there was a class ring purchasing day, a highlight in every Junior’s year: I got the one with the stone and the devil! What did you get? Our homecoming float was a mas- terpiece: If only we had not had the col- lision with the tree! The week work shop at Wofford spent in preparation for the busy year of layouts, copy fitting, photography, and design did not ease the shock of the actual effort. To produce a yearbook, money is essential. Our fund raising Miss Blue Devil Pageant was a succcess due to the hard work of Mr. Ernie Harrell, Danny Cohen, Dean Campbell, Edward Williams, Mrs. Pat Alexander, Steve Walters, Libby Britt, and the Student Council. To these people we owe a great debt. As usual, no matter how carefully we planned, there were always last minute problems. We couldn't have done without the talents of Bobby Godwin, Mike Harris, Jamie Davis, and Lee Freeman, who graciously pitched in to provide needed pictures and developing, we send a special thanks to Mr. Dwight Dana of The News and Press for the photography that he helped us with. The part of the annual that receives the least recognition is the copy. This year's liter- ary efforts were aided by students not on the staff. We have some excellent writers among our student body and we are always anxious for their contributions. Randy Taylor loaned us his talents to produce the EIPLOGUE. There were two people on whom we depended heavily: Buzz Pleming, our Josten's repre- sentative, and Larry Parker of Olan Mills Studio. They righted our wrongs and boosted our morale when the going got tough! The financial burden we left to Mr. Wilbur Vaughan. He kept us in line so that we would not be penniless at the close of the year. We were so busy with actual producation that it was a relief to not worry about this problem. We enjoyed planning this book for you. As the headaches increased and tears erupted, the bond of friendship grew stronger. Thank you for the opportunity of this endeavor. The laughter, the tears, friends, smiles all combine to make a story well told. For the Class of 1977, June 2 marks a turning point in their lives. It is the end of this facet of personal and academic growth and development. The years ahead promise success and personal fulfillment. The gyrations of the 1977 Junior Senior were the last to take place within the walls of - the St. John's 'old' gym. And April 22, 1977 were the last memories left here. To many they were the fondest. Spring arrived at St. John's to be greeted by the festive celebration of May Day in the amphitheater. Sabrina Byrd, May Queen, and Karen Joseph, Maid of Honor, were entertained with music from Sylvia Warr, Danny Cohen, Diana Williamson, and Tammy Haney and dancing by Monica Godfrey. AND MISS. ST. JOHN'S The annual festive Mr. and Miss St. John's Pageant, spon- sored by the Student Council, was held in March. Mr. and Mrs. Dave Neilson served as Master and Mistress of cere- monies for the occasion. The six judges had a hard task in determining the new queen. The reigning queen, Patsy Glea- son, crowned our new Miss St. John's, Liz Edens. Mitchell Willoughby succeeded Mike Gainey as Mr. St. John's. The first runners up were Shawn Sherrill and Arty Harrell. Cho- sen as second runners up were Mark and Crystal Johnson. After a medley of songs from the broadway musical, A Chorus Line , Danny Cohen was announced talent winner. Diane Williamson's rendition of Home from the musical ' 'The Whiz , brought her second place honors. The Student Body presented its president, Mary Kay Belissary, a bou- quet of roses for her timeless efforts and dedicated ser- vices. The night will remain in SJH's Hall of Memories forever. Warsau 6 Supplement SJHS THINCLADS RUN THEIR WAY CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP TO A young team lead by only four seniors presented St. John's first Conference Championship in many years. Under coach Dennis Stokes, in his last year as track coach at SJHS, the team paced themselves to statewide prominance by placing five members of the team in the state finals. Henry Carter was on the Mile Relay team that took 3rd in the state; he also finished 4th in the Long Jump. Nat Bacote, also a member of the winning Mile Relay, finished 5th in the Triple Jump, and a third member of the relay team, Leland Warsaw, took 4th place in the 440 yd. dash. The fourth member of the Mile Relay team was Heyward Derry, who set a new school record in the 880 yd dash with a time of 2:02.9. Sophomore Robbie Lynch represented St. John's in the state and finished 6th in the Pole Vault event. Creech (coach) The 1976-77 tennis team under the direction of Coach Robert Creech had a successful season by winning the 5-AAA conference championship. The MVP award was given to Greg Lunn, a sophomore who won his last 12 matches and was undefeated in 5-AAA competition. The SJH golf team was a young team this year with a 5-7 record. Only one Senior participated and that Senior, Lance Harris, was named MVP. The team was runner-up in the coference and qualified in the lower-state. On a warm Thursday night in June, the Senior class of 1977 anticipated their final walk together. Being the last class to graduate from the old school, they felt a sense of dignity and pride. Inspirational speeches were given by Sabrina Sellers, Valedictorian and Steven Lee, Salutatorian as well as other members of the Senior class. The theme song for graduation, Do You Know Where You’re Going To? was beautifully sung by Diana Williamson.
