BLUE DEVIL St. John’s High School Darlington, S. C. When we, the Senior Class, entered St. John’s for the first time, entering with us was a man who was also experiencing our same doubts, fears, and anticipation. As we became aquainted with our school, teachers, friends, and studies, we soon developed a deep respect for this man. Our needs became his concerns. Times have not changed; he is still devoting his time and energy toward cooperation between faculty and students. He has become essential as an advisor and as a friend, not only to the Senior Class but to all students, lie has continually exhibited interest in various school activities and community service projects. His variety of interests has shown us his respect for athletic as well as academic achievement. He has instigated changes for students in order that we might receive the best education possible. His positive, optimistic attitude toward life and learning has inspired many of us to continue our education in preparation for our future. After four years of school life at St. John’s, we realize how much his guidance has meant to each of us and we admire his special concern for each student as an individual. The Senior Class of St. John’s High School proudly dedicates the 1976 Blue Devil to you Mr. Lane Trantham. The Home- coming float contest proved to be the climax of the evening for the hard-working class volunteers. Each class presented a float, and the lucky winner was the Sophomore Class. The themes for the floats were “Tame the Tigers” - sophomore, “Rhinestone Devil” senior, “Pinball Devil” junior, and “Tidal- wave” freshman. Homecoming proved to be a successful event as The Devils downed the Tigers of Butler by a score of 42-7. 25 ALL STUDENTS ARE INVOLVED IN HOMECOMING Charge! The second annual Miss Blue Devil Pageant was held in St. John’s Auditorium on November 6. Nine beautiful and talented girls partici- pated in sportswear, talent, and evening gown competition. The contes- tants this year were: Mary Kay Belissary, Irene Taylor, Lorainne Mar- tin, Kay Goff, Mary Ann Council, Ivy Adams, Betty Coke Lawson, Dianne Hudson, and Tara Powers. Five judges judged the girls on talent, poise, and beauty. This year’s decision was difficult because each contestant performed extremely well. The theme for the pageant was “A Garden Party”. The stage was set against a beautiful mural depicting a garden scene. Mr. Ernie Harrell, a SJH teacher, provided the accompaniment for the contestants. Special entertainment was provided by Peach Creek, a local rock n’roll band, and by Crystal Johnson, a terrific baton twirler. Master of ceremonies was Mr. Jack Humphries, a Florence businessman. The pageant was a huge success for the Annual Staff, as well as the contestants. 34 Talent Winner Miss Tara Powers 3. 1. Contestants model evening gowns for final competition. 2. The 1975 varsity football campaign got under way in the early morning heat of August. Practices were rough but winning doesn’t come easy when trying to repeat as conference champions. In preparing for that all important first game, the Big Blue paired up with West Florence, Dillon, and Latta in scrimmage contests. The third week of school saw the Devils travel to Mullins for the season’s opener. The Big Blue outbid the Auctioneers, chalking up win number one. Rain caused the boys to play Cheraw on Saturday night, but the Braves forgot their war paint and St. John’s emerged victoriously. The following two weeks saw the Blue beat the threads off the Boll Weevils from Kingstree and swamp the Foxes from Marion. With four wins under their belts, the tide suddenly turned against the Blue Devils as Andrew Jackson’s Volunteer army waged war on the Big Blue bringing the first defeat. The Devil defense then tried to ruin the Bruins of South Florence, but the baby bears kicked themselves to victory with a field goal. The Big Blue got back on the winning track as they pounced on both Tiger teams. The Panthers from L ike City tried the Devils but were unable to keep the Blue from their second straight 5AAA Conference title. Manning invaded Devil country to no avail and St. John’s netted their eighth victory in tuning up for the state playoffs. The Garrett Falcons came to town and flew back to Charleston with a stunning win over the mighty Devils in the first round playoff game. The season was a most success!ul one; an 8-3 won-lost record, the Conference Champion- ship, and a berth in the state playoffs is certain evidence of another great year of Blue Devil football. Captains - Steve Campbell, John Reynolds One of the major events of the 1975-1976 school year was the Homecoming football game against Butler and the crowning of the Homecoming Queen at halftime. Fifteen girls participated in Home- coming, but only the thirteen senior girls were eligible for the title of Homecoming Queen. As halftime approached, the excitement mounted. Lyn Hart was crowned Homecoming Queen and Yolanda Coker was crowned Football Sweetheart. The sophomores won first place for their float “Tame the Tiger . The final results for the 1975 season were two wins, six losses, and two ties; however, this record does not reflect the squad’s hard work, school spirit, and team determination. The team did benefit from its trying season; each member gained experience and excitement for a better football season year. After weeks of hearing their coaches yell “O.K. girls, five and down!” the Junior and Senior teams met in another exciting contest ol skill, dexterity, and endurance — It’s called Powder Puff football. Powder Puff gives the girls in both classes the opportunity to work together as a team and to strive to achieve a common goal. This year’s game proved to be another thriller. In the first play of the game Junior halfback Helen Fox intercepted a passandon the following play ran in for the first score of the game. A solid Senior defense held against the extra points attempt. The Seniors’ spirit was not dampened by the Junior score. An offensive drive by the Seniors ended as Lyn Hart scored the first Senior touchdown and Susan Poe caught a pass for the two-point conversion. The third and final score came in the second quarter as halfback Lyn Hart once again put the Seniors on the board. The score stood 14-6. Halftime activities were highlighted by the crowning of Ms. Howard Cross as the 1975 Powder Puff Queen. Ms. Cross represented senior end Cricket Dargan. Our new queen was quoted as saying “No phone calls, please, I’m all booked up.” Back on the field second half, the 56 teams showed the same determination as before but failed to find the end zone. Both teams showed exceptional spirit and sportsmanship. The Juniors gained experience; the Seniors, a victory. The final score: Seniors-14, Juniors-6. JUNIORS BOTTOM ROW, L. to R.: M. Rummell, L. The club members enjoyed a field trip to Long- bluff, the original settlement in Darlington County. A trip to Charleston to tour old historical buildings was enjoyed by club members. Plans were also begun for a trophy case to display artifacts and old bottles. The anticipation mounted to a climax as the exciting night grew near. Juniors were still hard at work making final preparations for the big evening. On April 29, the “Spirit of’76” came alive as the gym filled with well dressed couples. The music of “Sugar Creek” vibrated every corner of the gym, and the crowded dance floor shook with the motions of its occupants. By the close of that joyous event, each couple was exhausted and sat- isfied. It had truly been a night to remem- ber.
