One of these teachers constantly kept us in line. Closeness would come later but first we had to learn to cope with the responsibilities of high school. Her fav- orite sayings were “Spit out that chewing gum and sign this card!” or “Get quiet, class!” Because of our evil ways, we spent a majority of our time with her in Detention Hall. It was only her way of helping us ma- c ture and develop ourselves to meet the future. Our tenth grade year, she became a friend as well as an instructor. Many of us confided in her and as a result we shared more than a mere student-teacher relationship. Time passed and our class progressed to the eleventh grade. Her thoughts, deeds and actions stayed with us. She attended all our class meetings to assist us with our plans and de- cisions. She was always there, ready to lend a helping hand. She ad- vised when we needed advice, and she criticized when we needed criti- cism. Her help was always appreciated and needed. Although we were juniors, we were still unable to make all our decisions alone. Now that we are ending our final year at SJH, she is still supporting us. Our friendship remains but has grown much deeper. It has develop- ed into something greater which is love. This is why we, the Class of 1975, dedicate the 1975 Blue Devil to you, Mrs. Catherine Moody. DEDICATION 2 3 WWW 8 11 12 ACADEMICS Fair youth beneath the trees, thou canst not leave thy song, nor ever can those trees be bare. The stu- dents proceeded in making plans for the project, but Mrs. Kistler and the choruses felt that they wanted to give Danny more than money; they wanted to give him a spiritual uplifting, also. It takes a lot of preparation for a musical, but the cho- ruses decided a repeat performance of “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown!” would be the perfect gift. The publicity was widespread and the support from the school was overwhelming. On the night of the performance the curtain opened to a full auditorium. The play was a success both financially and spiritually. Its mental uplifting for Danny’s family was apparent by the hap- piness on each member's face; the feeling of satisfaction was deep in the heart of each student. 26 28 A THLETICS VARSITY CHEERLEADERS First row: (left to right) Cricket Dargan, Diane Dove, Jan Smyre. They are heard though seldom seen, for the attention is cap- tivated by the players. It's a mighty task that falls upon the cheerleader. And what is her reward? The enthusiasm bursting from the cheerleader is expressed above all others as the team is boosted to another victory. On a brightly lit field streams a troop of blue jerseys. It is the peak of football season at St. John’s, and anticipation mounts as the captains shake hands. On the field the players vainly attempt to scatter the stomach butterflies by pro- ceeding with warm-up drills. The same routine is followed: execute a few plays, catch a few passes, kick a few punts. Yet the feeling toward the ap- proaching game is a little different each time. For the Seniors, another game closer to their final match as Blue Devils; for the Juniors, another quarter closer to the cherished block “D”; and for the few Sopho- mores, another rewarding experience as varsity play- ers. But one similar goal binds all participants. It is the excitement of winning and knowing your efforts are appreciated. As the clock ticks its final seconds, a mass of fans flock on the field to show our Devils we love them! It is a new endeavor with an exhaust- ing daily routine. Endless weeks of practice are required to develop a group of young individuals into a united team, not to mention the personal sacrifices that must be made for the welfare of the squad. J.V. players have a right to be proud. Thier hard work is seen today on the Junior Varsity team and, in years to come, will bring continued satisfaction on the varsity team. 39 POWDER PUFF QUEEN 1974 - Miss Al Coggeshall SENIORS (1 to r, 1st row) D. James, J. DeLoach, P. Mclellan, M. Byrd, D. Wilson, F. Waddell, R. Edens, D. Boyd, J. Jones, K. Howie, R. Taylor, S. Scott. (2nd row) B. Patterson, M. Lundy, D. Edwards, B. Clanton, M. Jackson, L. D. Chandler. (2nd row) Rummell, V. Hudson, K. Cohen, J. Randolph, Y. Coker, L. Hart, T. Windham. A Powder Puff football game is perhaps the one appropriate chance for Junior and Senior girls to shed their frills and ladylike manners to participate in the action-packed game that captivates the attention of all spectators. After all, how often can a viewer witness the sight of delicate young females struggling for victory on a football field. Excitement dominated this year’s game from the beginning quarter when Lyn Hart made a spectacular dash to the end .one, rewarding the Juniors with the first score of the game. Yolanda Coker went over for the two points conversion as the Junior bench screamed its joy. With time running out in the half, the Junior defense held its ground and the score remained 8-0. The halftime activities included the crowning of the new Powder Puff Queen. Selected from a long line of beauties. Miss Al Coggeshall received the title. A more determined Senior team returned to the field at the start of the third quarter. It was this determination and a great offensive effort that drove Becky Clanton into the end zone. To the delight of the Juniors the extra point attempt failed. At fourth quarter the score still stood 8-6, until Mildred Lundy scored, giving the Seniors their first lead in the game. The Senior bench cheered as Melonie Byrd drove in for the extra points making the final score of the game 14-8. Yes, it was a victory for the Seniors, but the Juniors did not lose. Instead they gained greater knowledge for the following year and experienced the fun known to all Powder Puff participants. 43 GIRLS’ BASKETBALL (clockwise from top) A. McFarland, P. Thomas, V. Gilbert, L. Koon, M. Rummell, R. Edens, H. Foxe, R. Slater, L. Hart, M. Byrd, Y. Coker, N. Carroll, (center) Coach Morrison. Managers: (I. to r.) Mary Kay Belissary, Julie McCullough, Harriet Davis. During the past years basketball fans have witnessed the develop- ment of an extraordinarily successful girls' basketball team. The 1974-75 squad was no exception. Composed of four returning lettermen and several capable newcomers, the dedicated team prac- ticed long and hard to achieve perfection. Each member played an important role in developing a team that has attracted more specta- tors each season. 44 Coach Andy Morrison 46 47 BOYS’ BASKETBALL Kneeling: E. Truett, S. Hursey. managers. 2nd row: (L. to R.) E. Huggins, R. Peavey, D. Flowers, R. Locklair, D. Cotton, W. Evans, B. Sansbury, J. Bryant, M. Hatchell, A. Baldwin, N. Pearson, T. Slater, Coach D. Nelson. Managers - Eddie Truett and Steve Hursey. An anxious crowd springs to its feet as the Varsity Basketball team adds another two points to the scoreboard. The seconds tick rhythmically off the clock, yet the outcome of the game remains unpredictable. Unpredictable is perhaps the one word that best describes basketball. Unlike many sports, basketball at St. John’s is always spontaneously exciting and entertaining with every play. The high caliber of our team and its coach brings the loving fans back year after year. It is easy to understand why each Tuesday and Friday night the gym overflows with spectators awaiting the gratify- ing sight of another Devil victory. Its im- provement during the past years is re- markable. It is sometimes difficult for the student body to realize the long hours and dedication that accompany “The Bul- letin” to the printing press each month. Interesting news items from the school and outside sources are collected and de- veloped to bring reading satisfaction to every student who gazes upon the pic- turesque newsmagazine. Appreciation from each reader brings satisfaction to “The Bulletin” staff. Sports Staff: (I. to r.) This year, as in the past, our student government has worked diligently to improve the school and please both students and faculty. Each member has a responsibility to the students he repre- sents; therefore, it is the majority opinion he must express. A majority of the activi- ties at St. John’s are promoted by the Student Council. Among these are Home- coming. Mr. Miss St. John’s, and many of our assembly programs. By working together, as a group, the Student Council continues to better St. John's through understanding and cooperation. Wasn't that a good suggestion? We’ve got to get down to business people! Do y’all understand? This group is the St. John’s High School Band ready to make its yearly de- but at the Southern 500 Parade. The parade is merely the first event on the calendar for our busy band members. In addition to regular re- hearsals, their hectic schedule in- cludes halftime performances at football games, special appearances at pep rallies, and participation in Christmas parades throughout the state. It is the loyalty and determi- nation of each individual that al- lows our band to be an asset to St. John’s year after year. 63 GIRLS’ CHORUS THE BOYS’ ENSEMBLE Ho! Ho! Ho! A sweet harmony of voices can be heard from the auditorium as the St. John's Chorus rehearses. Performing often for the student body and public, the chorus keeps its talented students busy year round. Yet, there is more to Chorus than performing. The Chorus members not only sing beautifully, they also read sheet music and study song origins. The perfec- tion of our chorus assures St. John’s en- tertainment and enjoyment year after year. 65 PEP CLUB Officers: (top to bottom) - Lyn Hart — President, Mary K. Belissary — Vice-President, Carlene Lyde — Treasurer, Libby Britt — Secretary. Walking around the school, one is apt to see young men and women struggling with an arm- load of cushions and raincoats. These future salesmen are hard-working members of the St. John's Pep Club. What exactly docs the Pep Club do? Giving support to the sports program is perhaps the most important task. This role is by no means easy, considering the miles of travel involved in following the athletic sched- ules. Support requires money; therefore, the ambitious Pep Club member becomes a smooth talking salesman. Faculty and parents are usually the first prey, but in time all two-legged crea- tures become victims of the Pep Club. It's all worth the work when the efforts put forth are appreciated ... I’m glad I bought four raincoats and two cushions! We support our team! First Row: (left to right) - Mr. V. Pride is an important part of the Block D Club. To be eligible for membership in this organization, one must have earned a letter in one of the six high school sports; also included are the Varsity Cheerlead- ers. No wonder these students are proud; -it isn’t often an individual must prove himself before acquiring admittance to an organization. Sponsoring infinite projects, the Block D raises money to reward out- standing athletes with letters and sweat- ers. Above all. Block D implants within its members the importance of portraying dignity and sportsmanship in all aspects of life. Directed by the designated leaders, the ROTC members advance their skills with drill team and rifle team practice. The ROTC stays active by visiting state Army bases, marching in parades, and perform- ing in school sponsored activities. Benefit- ing from their hard work and training, the ROTC received numerous awards, includ- ing first place in the Florence Veteran’s Parade. “Officers have all the fun,” says Kim Blackmon. 70 KEY CLUB OFFICERS: (left to right) John McRae - Vice-President; Lane McRae-Treasurer; John Reynolds-Secretary; Patricia Williams-Sweetheart; Randy Locklair President. Yes, because it has been a long day and the bus is finally loading for its afternoon journey home. A bus driver not only climbs into a freezing bus early every morning, he also drags out of an empty bus late every afternoon. The bus driver must struggle through the late starts, the frequent breakdowns, and the regular bus clean-ups. Next time your bus driver seems a little grumpy, sit down and be quiet! 74 JR. Have you wondered who cares enough to pick up the trash others throw down? It is people with con- cern for our school grounds. Con- cern is the reason for the establish- ment of the Ecology Club. With hopes of beautifying the campus and the city. Ecology Club mem- bers devote after school hours and weekends to raking, painting, and planting. The results of their hard work is evident: yet more time is needed to promote a suitable plan for continued improvement. If you see someone painting trash cans on Saturday afternoon, you'll know lie's a member of the Ecology Club. Sitting (1. to r.): Mary Council, Rosa Dargan, Cheryl Skinner, Tammy Windham, Lynn Koon. Realizing the need for a better farming program, its members experiment with new ideas in production. More importantly, they draw conclusions from their findings, there- fore, benefiting the farmer. The partici- pants in the FFA program become in- volved with county fairs, contests, and county meetings. The knowledge gained by these young men will aid in the strug- gle for a better agricultural world. First Row: (I. to r.) The St. John’s Chapter of the Future Homemakers of America teaches young ladies the necessity of organized home- making. Today a housewife is responsible for more than cooking, sewing, and clean- ing. A modern homemaker must demon- strate thriftiness in the family budget along with cautiousness in marketing and shopping. The FHA implants within all members the importance of the house- wife in assuring more organized home- making in tomorrow's more complex so- ciety. A feeling of suspense hangs over the crowded stands; tonight is magical, for it is Home- coming at St. John’s. Unlike the usual football game, tonight the concern lies with halftime and the crowning of the 1974 Home- coming Queen. As the second quarter draws to a close, the atten- dants prepare for the parade onto the field. The band begins its march and silence sweeps through the audience. Smiling young hopefuls take their assigned positions. Yes, it has all been rehearsed and perfected, for there can be no flaw in this beautiful evening. No words can describe the anticipation felt in the heart of each attendant. When the announcement is made, cheers arise. It seems the winner is last in realizing it is her name which has been called. Her facial expression leaves no doubt of her surprise and happiness. This year it is Patricia Williams who takes her rightful place in the long line of queens. As she is crowned, memory recalls that Patricia also received the title of Football Sweetheart. One more announce- ment is left to be made. Sophomores scream with delight, for it is their entry that captured the winner’s trophy in float competition. Proving the night is a complete success, the Devils strike up another victory for St. John's. Satisfaction finds rest in the empty stands as darkness brings an end to another memorable Homecoming. Yet the eager smiles show there could be no other class with a greater willingness to begin. The years that follow will project the joy achieved through ac- ceptance and participation. His first phase of changing and accepting has been completed; life at St. John’s has settled into a comfortable routine with only occasional adjustments. The Sophomore has found the foresight to spot pitfalls of student life and the ability to solve them. By no means have the doubts and uncer- tainties vanished. Yet the Sophomore class, as the second link in a unified chain of experiences, has been searching for an identity. Everything takes longer than you think it will. If anything can go wrong, it will!!! And Mrs. Hancock thought we were hard at work!!! So this annual is finally finished and the members of the Blue Devil staff can at last rest their tired, aching bodies. We ached the most, for every day from 12:IS to 1:10 all we heard was “Beckie, come here!”, or “Beckie, come help me do this.” Or perhaps, “Bulldog, how you do this?” or “Bulldog, how you do that?” Or, “Chip, quit shaking the table!” or “Why? You hungry?”. It’s been a heck of a year, and we’ve tried to capture the flavor of it for the Class of ’75 and all posterity. Ever since that hectic day the three of us emerged as the editors, we have been hard at work. Working together has really brought the three of us together and we have gotten to know each other deeply. We really know what finks each of us are. Whether we were trudging through the snake-infested Pee Dee River Swamp or just sitting in Bulldog's room, “The Workshop,” we were hard at work. We really enjoyed doing it, or at least that’s what Mrs. Hancock said each day as she tied us to our desks to prevent our jumping through the window. We’d like to take this time to nominate Mildred for the Nobel prize for literature for her outstanding and monumental contributions to the annual. She was about the only one in the entire class who could do her job without asking questions incessantly. And special thanks go to Joan who raised the money to publish this yearbook. And thanks to the entire student body of SJH for without you there could be no Blue Devil. P.S. And thanks to Mrs. Hancock who made us set our priorities!!! 20C iQ cJui 7 tooncA Mun Pajt X OAs Sayct WllLS
