ZhtVhtt 1974 ST. JOHN S HIGH SCHOOL Darlington, S. C. DEDICATION The past four years have been the most rapidly changing ones of our lives. You both entered into them during a time of development and an- ticipation, giving us the guidance and understanding that we so desperately needed. You have dedicated your time, your energy, and yourselves to help us. We remember the time you gave us, as Juniors, when we held the Junior-Senior. Without your help, it might not have been the success that it was. Due to similar efforts on your part, new and rewarding programs, such as the Fine Arts Film Festival, have been instigated at SJH. You have made St. John’s a better school while greatly enriching our outlook, in- spiring us to become independent young adults. Together you have given us lessons 2 in life along with a new vision. You have taught us to see with our hearts as well as with our minds. “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.” Nevertheless, the time of know- ledge was essential in our expansion to new horizons through you. Your dedi- cation does not end in teaching a course; it continues with concern for us as individuals. You have shown all of us at St. John's High that we can handle responsibility. We could not be- gin to repay you for all that you have done for us, but with our graduation the time has come to show our appre- ciation. It is with sincere love, pride, and respect that we, the Senior Class, dedi- cate the 1974 Blue Devil to you— TABLE OF CONTENTS PROLOGUE...........6 ATHLETICS ........18 HONORS............54 FEATURES..........62 ORGANIZATIONS ... .78 ADMINISTRATION . . .110 CLASSES .........120 EPILOGUE ........162 ADVERTISEMENTS . . .168 10 ... there is a time for seeing. 11 18 CHEERLEADERS KNEELING: N. We had eight returning senior lettermen from our “72” squad. These seniors along with our two fine Co-captains, Allen Lambert and Terry Gettyshad to provide leadership and desire for twenty-five underclassman. Much credit is due to these seniors for the success of our season. We had some close and exciting games during the year. Our 7-0 win over Cheraw was nip and tuck until the last few minutes. A tremendous goal line stand by a young defensive team in the last few minutes preserved a 7-6 win over Marion. Then there were the two big conference wins over Wilson 14-7 and Lake City 6-0, that were not decided until the last 30 seconds. We had some tough losses during the 73 season such as the 6-6 tie with Southside, after a 50 yard electrifying run by Thomas Robinson in the last few 26 minutes, which fell short. For the third year in a row, a disappointing loss to Kingstree and two heart break- ing losses to West Florence and arch rival Hartsville were suffered by the Devils. Our won and lost record could have been better, but the effort and desire the team exhibited all year couldn’t have been any greater. 27 J.V. FOOTBALL ROW I: S. Lee. R. Timmons, D. Hodge. B. The Seniors’ scored first with Scooter DeLorme’s electrifying 60 yard touchdown run. The extra point try was short and the Seniors led 6-0. Then, behind some fine offensive blocking, the Seniors scored again. The extra point attempt was no good and the Seniors led 12-0 at half time. Getting back in the game, the Juniors controlled the ball for the entire third quarter as Diane Wilson scored. Becky Clanton added the extra point making the score 12-8. In the end, it was the hard work which enabled the Seniors to win. Scooter DeLorme scored her third touch- down, making the final score 18-8 in favor ol the undefeated Seniors. 30 GIRLS’ BASKETBALL KNEELING: Scooter DeLorme, Scooter Rooter, Veretta Schulyer. STANDING: Coach Neilson, Coach Robbins, Andy Baldwin, Mike Hatched, Willie Evans, Randy Locklair, Damon Flowers, Johnny English, Eddie Truett, Steve Hursey. With only four seniors and one returning starter, the 1973-74 basketball Blue Devils set out young and inexperi- enced. It was a long season, 5-16, with victories coming seldom, but the team kept their hearts and the fans kept their faith, as the Blue Devils played good basketball. Andy Baldwin and Ken Howie proved to be the ball- handling guards, with Ronnie Foxe and Nat Pearson filling the other guard spot. Ricky Clanton, Mike Hat- ched, and Willie Evans showed real strengths as the forwards, and Terry Gettys filled the center position well. The lack of strong rebounding and poor ballhand- ling at times turned out to be the villains in many close games that seemed to just slip out of the Devils’ hands. Over all, though, our basketball team played well, with great desire and determination, and made a showing to be proud of knowing it was their best. Led by Coach Gene Stokes the Blue Devils will be strong contenders for the conference crown. Strong pitching and over-all team experience should propel the Devils on to victory. Coach Gene Stokes A SPECIAL TRIBUTE TO The SJH Class of ’74 would like to pay a special tribute to a person who has helped us in many ways. His talents are not limited to the school itself, but he also promotes extracurricular activities. His guidance through school and especially in the sports program has given many of us insight into future problems of life. It is with love, respect, and honor that the Class of ’74 pays special tribute to the retirement of our greatest coach and present athletic director, Coach James E. Welch. 52 COACH JAMES E. Thomas Robinson scored the winning touchdown with the clock show- ing 1 minute and 13 seconds. Robinson received Gettys' wide pitch, broke one tackle at the line of scrimmage, and out ran the pursuing Panthers. The Blue Devil defense was superb. Lake City could get no further than its own 34 yard line in the first half. The Panthers did not cross mid-field until late in the fourth quarter when Gamble inter- cepted a Gettys pass at the goal line and returned 53 yards to the St. John’s 47. The defense tack- led the Panther quarterback for successive losses of 7, 2, and 11 yards, forcing the Panthers to punt. St. John’s then drove 56 yards for the game breaker. Lake City took the kickoff and with the aid of two pass interferences reached the Devil’s 8 yard line. The defense swarmed the Panther quarter- back for an 8 yard loss to end the game. Among the annual projects; Homecoming, Mr. and Miss St. John’s Contest, the teacher auction, and Bermuda Day, some changes were made and new programs were added. Establishing the written procedure for future Homecoming activities, holding the Mr. and Miss St. John’s Contest in April instead of Decem- ber due to the energy crisis, and Bermuda Day consisted of competition between the four classes instead of homerooms were some of the changes this year’s Student Council made. They also pushed for the installation of Coke and cracker machines. The Student Council was very successful in their endeavors. ROW 1: D. Weatherford, N. Morse, R. Joseph, A. Baldwin, J. Reynolds, K. BUS Bus Drivers Perform Ardous Task Well No students at St. John’s are entrusted with more responsibility than the school bus drivers. Each day of the academic year they transport fellow students to and from school. The job is a difficult one: busses sometimes break down, riders often misbehave, back roads sometimes become ankle deep in mud. Bus drivers must leave home earlier in the morning and arrive home late. Dri- vers, however, can take satisfaction in knowing that they provide much needed service for per- forming this important job well, St. John’s thanks them. They have the responsibility of teaching us and educating us in the way they think is best. Some people don’t realize all the different roles a teacher must play. Not only must they transfer their knowledge to us, but they have several other tasks to fulfill in order for a student to look up to them. When a student has the confidence of a teacher that is ready and willing to teach them something in turn the student is willing to learn what is taught. Most teachers have found the way to enable us to absorb what they present in the classroom. They have become mentors in order to help us in different ways other than just learning about Macbeth, the Constitu- tion, and formulas. They have also taken on the difficult task of helping us to make decisions, while dealing with both our school and personal lives. We as students, will find they have been a great influence on each of us. Through their help and guid- ance, we hope we can help others as they have helped us. MRS. BESSIE l i t MING Typing MRS. This year we as freshmen en- tered a new phase of life. We feel that this is a time for learning, but most important, a time for setting goals that will determine the course of our lives. Some have set popu- larity or a good time as their goals. Those who are wiser have set as their goals knowledge, lasting friendships, and inner peace. In our quest to reach our goals, some will fall by the wayside, but we will continue to grow and develop. One lesson we have learned this year is not to move in leaps and bounds or cop out along the way because a higher level of inner peace could be just one more step away. All alone in the SJH halls, a new fresh- man ponders over her future days at SJH. Where do we want to go and how do we want to get there? As individuals we are still malleable and vulnerable to outside influences. We have discovered most of our strengths and weaknesses but most have yet to learn to maximize our strengths so that we may develop our full potential and contribute our talents to improve and enrich the quality of our school life. As we pass through our soph- omore days we continue to move and grow. You must think things out carefully and then make the best choice. This is what we Juniors have and will con- tinue to do. We have tried to do our best in everything, not only in school life but in our personal lives too. We have a big responsibility on our hands. We must learn to do what’s best for the entire school, not only us. The Seniors have set high standards for themselves, and we must do the same, for we know this year is the last one that we will have someone to lead us. We have done our best to learn the often puzzling ways of life not to be carbon copies of others, to be our- selves, to do what we have tried to do. We know we are approaching the top. We are now taking the last big step, for next year we will be known as the Senior Class of St. John’s. The Seniors are great and the best, but we the JUNIORS, will be the best yet! Nat Pearson lounges after a long, hard, day. Happiness is getting out of school clothes and into good ole’ knockarounds. As the last days at SJH roll on by, these fellows relax on the good ’ole front steps. 146 A SENIOR’S TIME OF REALIZATION The year has arrived and the Senior Class of 1974 has finally reached the end of twelve hard, but rewarding years. As we prepare to go out and face the world, whether it be going to college or finding a job, we begin to realize that we are on the threshold of a new life. Although we know that the road ahead may be a rough one, our past experiences here at SJH have helped to prepare us for the future. Looking back on our days at SJH, the Senior Class will be able to remember themselves with pride. We won honors and awards in all areas of competition from scholastic works to sports. The Girls’ Powder Puff team is the second in the history of the school to win two years in a row. Our football, basketball, and baseball players have led their teams through wins and defeats and have always held their heads high. We’ve tried to bring dignity and honor to our school and have succeeded. As graduation approaches, we will be able to look back on our high school days with many golden memories. Working together on our many goals, we have realized what a great class we are and as we approach the end of high school, we leave with some sorrow, but with the realization that with this goal accomplished, we still have many more in life. The friendships and the memories that this school has given us will live with us forever. The good, the bad, the triumphs, and the defeats have affected every one of us in some way. As co-editors of the 1974 Blue Devil, we tried to capture these friendships and memories. It is hard to please everyone, and we know that this is an impossible task. We have put a great deal of effort into this, and we hope it means as much to you as it does to us. We extend our sincerest thanks to our advisors, Mr. Frank Tallant and Mrs. Elizabeth Ervin, our business managers, Karen Flowers and Charlie Belissary, and to all who have worked to make this annual possible. Our future may lie beyond our vision, but it is not completely beyond our control. It is the shaping impulse of America that neither fate nor nature nor the irresistible tides of history, but the work of our own hands, matched to reason and principle, will determine our destiny. Paula Demetrious Louise Howard 200 Robert F. Kennedy i
