THE BLUE DEVIL 1970 St. John’s High School Darlington, S. C. Co-Editors Mincy Copeland John Gardner Advisor Mrs. John T. Langston Bus. Mgr. Jayne Haynie ORGANIZATIONS AND HONORS... 62 2 DEDICATION The word that best describes you is concern; concern for the students and for the reputation of St. John’s High School. You have taught us many things both in and out of class. You have given us your best, and you have expected our best in return. Asa teacher you have taught us to respect knowledge. As an individual you have respected us and in doing so you have taught us to respect ourselves. You are our teacher and our counselor but most important, you are our friend. We are honored to dedicate the 1970 Blue Devil to you, Mr. William E. DcWitt. i i ! ,!: I ■ ► STUDENT LIFE For every thing there is a season and time for every purpose under Heaven. A time to begin - A time to sow as each fall new seeds of knowledge are planted hopefully to blossom and a time to reap the rewards they bring. A time to break down the barriers that separate us and a time to build up understanding. A time to weep at our failures and laugh with our successes. What gains do we receive from this work? . . . Silent contemplation ... Quiet moments ... Laughter... Cooperation with fellow students ... 10 11 13 18 19 20 Excitement of the game . . . Victorious Seniors . . . Powder Puff Beauties ... The despair of defeat .. . And the final return to normal activities. 21 22 24 25 26 29 Oul ATHLETICS A time to win and time to lose . . . Each year we experience both in our sports program. The exhilarating competition of team and individual sports conditions us for the competition we will meet in whatever fields we seek. In this competition we learn that we cannot always be winners, but neither are we entirely losers, if we have played the game with spirit. Sports demand the excellence of body and spirit that will be invaluable to our future. We are ending our life here at St. John’s, but we are just beginning our life as young adults. The end of our high school life has come; and yet, the wisdom, the guidance, the understanding and the friendship, which we have received from our teachers and fellow students at St. John’s, will not end with our graduation but will follow us and help us for the rest of our lives. We have labored hard harder than we ever thought we would and without the help of many gracious people, this annual never would have gone to press. We hope it will please you, all. We tried our best. We feel a deep sense of appreciation to all those who have assisted us so wonderfully and regret we cannot name them all in this short space. To Jayne Haynie, our Business Manager and her staff, we owe an especial debt. They did a tremendous job raising money for the annual. No one really knows the cost of an annual or all the hard work it takes to raise this money. To Mrs. Langston, our faculty advisor, we express our love and devotion for her experienced and capable direction; to Cora our great right hand and all the others who helped us, whether on our staff or not, we can only say, “Thanks for a job well done.” To our entire student body and to all who have played a part in our growth and education, may wc convey this thought: Through these years you have formed for all of us a straight and honorable course from which “our feet shall ne'er be straying”. John Gardner Mincy Copeland 200
