The team took wins over Cheraw, Lake City and Mullins in totaling a 3-6-2 record. The injury-ridde n team bowed to Conway, Summerville, Marion, Camden, Dillon, and Harts- ville, while they tied Bis- hopville and Florence. The year 1964 marked an addition to the coaching staff when 1958 graduate of St. John's, James Buie was added as the backfield coach. At the end of every year the team votes for a recip- ient of the Jerome F. Pate Award. This year the team's outstanding guard, Billy Lisenby, won the cov- eted award. Co-captain Billy Brad- shaw was selected on the Class AA All State second team as a tackle. Pretty Miss Sue Shep- ard was crowned homecom- ing queen for the year at the Camden game. It was their first year of organized basketball and was the first of six consecutive championship bas- ketball teams. In 1964 the same team was included in the grad- uating class of St. John's and was ranked as one of the top prep teams in the state. In their first year of varsity play they enjoyed a 9-1 conference record and were runners-up in the conference tournament. Coach Congratulated GIRLS BASKETBALL TENNIS Although the boys tennis team as a whole did not have a very pros- perous season, it was highlighted by one eminent player. Billy Cain, a five- year letterman for the team, led his squad to a 2-11 won-loss mark, in 1964. In the 13 team matches Cain was defeat- ed only twice in singles play, to rank as one of the state's finest prep netters. The versatile senior was the winner of the 1964 Sandhills Tournament and was a r unne r-up in the doubles competition of the Pee Dee Conference tour- nament as a junior. The girls team had an even less successful sea- son, as they were win- less. They were expected to improve considerably in 1965, however. The boys team suf- fered double losses to Florence, Hartsville, and Camden by a single point and were defeated once by Rivers, Gaud, and A. C. Flora. The two wins were recorded over Sumter. 7fie JJJoys Jennis Jecuri Coach Chewning Coach Cain Billy Cain - Senior (Jir s 'Jen nis Jeam BASEBALL 33 Coach Bill Frye 1964 Results Darlington .. 3 Florence .. 0 Darlington . .6 Marion.... 4 2 Florence .. 9 2 Hartsville . 3 5 Marion.... 7 6 Dillon 0 1 Hartsville .13 1 Latta 5 11 Dillon 9 9 Lake City.. 1 5 Lake City.. 0 S Larry Sanderson - Catcher Bill Tidwell - Pitcher Billy Abbott - Senior Ingram Truluck - Senior GOLF The golf team enjoyed its finest season of recent years, as they not only won the Pee Dee Conference tournament, but compiled a 13-2 overall record. The 1965 team was the first to compete on the Country Club's new 18 hole layout, which was opened on the preceeding summer. As a freshman on the team in 1964, Linnwood Edwards played in the third slot with a competitive shooting aver age of 81.5. He was followed by hardhitting Billy Abbott, who had an 81.8 average. George Wayne Riles (June 3, 1947 - February 20, 1965) On February 22 of this year we were stunned by the loss of one of our senior class members when Wayne Riles died of injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Florence, S. C. The likeable senior, who died slightly more than three months before his graduation, was an active participant of his class. As a freshman he was a member of the junior varsity football team and participated in the field events on the track team. In 10th grade Wayne repeated on the football and track teams and was a member of the T I Club. Last year he joined the Future Farmers of America Club and became a key worker in the club as well as in that department. In October of 1964 he went to Kansas City for two weeks with his agriculture instructor to attend the annual National Future Farmers of America Convention. According to his instructor, he was an active member and raised quail for his project. Prior to his death, he was working on a radio program for the FFA. 0%uiograp is fit lose A yi$ ZT A ' Cu i fi iteu lo £ } 0 ' CRaaaXvuj oJ$A cjeJ UJ LkAas j _ oO Cd) 0 16,57 ° ,fe6 o'’1 7'- ' ■'“v R V.t s y-i UDqJMj Xg D sCCioeL+z? r ft X- gwoh (aoUfU fiitr x sv J tool wfttr (?t? y eftSefinilSfiC S pH J £ sfiwsej z. „ yiwWtto1 OftrovjP.fi C 5 3 C a4(X -S TloUcFj if)K C H SK') iM A 3 u-jx nr tA ru ✓ yr pL A r oof'u s v- J? 3 6 t L yyo..
