Sub-Freshman Yr.--1952-‘53 Dear Diary, Gosh its different in high school. Everything’s so-o-o strange. Nobody knew where to go at first. And on top of that we got blessed out’ for noisy conduct at the election of class officers. This was our first taste of real high school life! Later, just when the Eisenhower-Stevenson campaign was at its hottest and the whole high school took a poll on it. we. taught by experience, were much better behaved. About the middle of the year, we had our first associations with EXAMS. They were monstrous check ups. After this, things quieted down ‘til second semester exams. Finally we left, exhausted, for summer vacations. Love, Marty Freshman Yr.--1 953- 54 Dear Diary, This year we became used to the pattern of high school. Not remembering our fright and horror in initiation, wt happily smeared the new sub-freshies with lipstick and shoe polish. All the girls fell in love with upperclassmen boys and our boys were too preoccupied with sports to care. Plans for the Sports- manship Trophy with Hartsville went into effect. Although we didn't win this year, I know we will soon. Love, Marty Sophomore yr.--1954-‘55 Dear Diary, In our sophomore year we moved into our new cafeteria and shop buildings and ?cheerily? settled down to a long session of study. This session didn’t last long; soon students were up to their old pranks again. Everyone was terribly disappointed when we lost the Hartsville game by one point. The year passed rather quickly and soon we were off for vacation lands again (after being com- pletely drained by exams, of course). Love, Marty Junior Yr.--1955-56 Dear Diary, Back from summer vacations again, we found it quite nice to be second only in authority to the Seniors. At the first of the year we ordered class rings for our senior year and began to plan for our Junior-Senior. Everyone sold magazines madly so that we’d have money to put this big event on. And in the middle of sales time the school installed the intercom system. Only one draw- back--teachers can now check on us anytime. This is frightening! We students might be in the middle of something. At last Junior-Senior time rolled around and we all had a wonderful time. Then came another summer vacation and we all left looking forward to our Senior year. Love, Marty Senior Yr .--1956-’ 57 Dear Diary, This was the most exciting year of all. We were SENIORS! Along with this came Senior privileges. There was only one disillusion--it was terribly hard for some of us to be dignified. Of course, in spite of this hardship, we were very dignified. Early in the year, we received our class rings, and a little later on a big thrill--we beat Hartsville, 28 to 13! Then after glorious Christmas holidays, EXAMS rolled around again. And again they left us breathless! Then came spring and warm weather and a delightful Junior- Senior, then more Exams, and finally the big moment--Graduation. Some cried, some laughed; strangely, we all seemed a little sad to leave St. John’s and old friends . Love, Marty Marion Coggeshall Class Historian
