OF ST. JOHN'S HIGH SCHOOL DARLINGTON, S.C. The time has come for us to leave St.John's ---some of us for only a few months, others for the last time. We have had many disappoint- ments, and sometimes it seemed the defeats far outweighed the triumphs. But we discover now that we remember not the unhappy moments, but the happy ones. We'll remember the cold football games... our thrilling victory over Hartsville...the Foot- ball dances...our excitement at receiving class rings. ..frightened underclassmen and terrified seniors at exam time...Bulletin Staff rushing to meet deadlines...May Day, prettie r than ever with its circus theme ...the dreamy Junior- Senior .. .our beautiful C I a s s Day, making us, strangely, both sad and happy. And finally, Graduation! Yes, we'll forget the bad times, and this is as it should be. But never will we forget these memories, for THIS IS OUR YEAR! SOBOL CONTENTS serious concentration SENIORS........................ 7 fun and frolic UNDERCLASSMEN................. 19 participation ACTIVITIES.....................27 the spirit of sportsmanship SPORTS.........................41 pride for those who excel FEATURES.......................49 •• • With a big bow in h e r hair...gladly offering to give help to anyone who needs it...trotting briskly through the halls smiling at everyone she meets...making the school a more pleasant place to be...this is our Mrs. Ervin. Her voice is often heard in merriment, and her classes are often interrupted by the laughter of the students; nevertheless, we always seem to learn our lessons when we are in her classes. Sub-Freshman Yr.--1952-‘53 Dear Diary, Gosh its different in high school. Everything’s so-o-o strange. Nobody knew where to go at first. And on top of that we got blessed out’ for noisy conduct at the election of class officers. This was our first taste of real high school life! Later, just when the Eisenhower-Stevenson campaign was at its hottest and the whole high school took a poll on it. we. taught by experience, were much better behaved. About the middle of the year, we had our first associations with EXAMS. They were monstrous check ups. After this, things quieted down ‘til second semester exams. Finally we left, exhausted, for summer vacations. Love, Marty Freshman Yr.--1 953- 54 Dear Diary, This year we became used to the pattern of high school. Not remembering our fright and horror in initiation, wt happily smeared the new sub-freshies with lipstick and shoe polish. All the girls fell in love with upperclassmen boys and our boys were too preoccupied with sports to care. Plans for the Sports- manship Trophy with Hartsville went into effect. Although we didn't win this year, I know we will soon. Love, Marty Sophomore yr.--1954-‘55 Dear Diary, In our sophomore year we moved into our new cafeteria and shop buildings and ?cheerily? settled down to a long session of study. This session didn’t last long; soon students were up to their old pranks again. Everyone was terribly disappointed when we lost the Hartsville game by one point. The year passed rather quickly and soon we were off for vacation lands again (after being com- pletely drained by exams, of course). Love, Marty Junior Yr.--1955-56 Dear Diary, Back from summer vacations again, we found it quite nice to be second only in authority to the Seniors. At the first of the year we ordered class rings for our senior year and began to plan for our Junior-Senior. Everyone sold magazines madly so that we’d have money to put this big event on. And in the middle of sales time the school installed the intercom system. Only one draw- back--teachers can now check on us anytime. This is frightening! We students might be in the middle of something. At last Junior-Senior time rolled around and we all had a wonderful time. Then came another summer vacation and we all left looking forward to our Senior year. Love, Marty Senior Yr .--1956-’ 57 Dear Diary, This was the most exciting year of all. We were SENIORS! Along with this came Senior privileges. There was only one disillusion--it was terribly hard for some of us to be dignified. Of course, in spite of this hardship, we were very dignified. Early in the year, we received our class rings, and a little later on a big thrill--we beat Hartsville, 28 to 13! Then after glorious Christmas holidays, EXAMS rolled around again. And again they left us breathless! Then came spring and warm weather and a delightful Junior- Senior, then more Exams, and finally the big moment--Graduation. Some cried, some laughed; strangely, we all seemed a little sad to leave St. John’s and old friends . Love, Marty Marion Coggeshall Class Historian Under the able v- leadership of C. E. Benton, 11th Billy Summer 10th; Joy Bostoi). 9th; and Tony Lewis, 8th we experienced a wonderful year as part of St. John’s. THE JUNIOR CLASS C . E. Treasurer Since its organization eight years ago, St. John’s Student Council has done much to better St. John’s; and with the leadership of some capable and enthusiastic upper- classmen, our Council has just completed probably the most successful year in its history. Though its achievements cannot be listed in this small space, the Student Council may be justly proud of a job well done for ’ 57 . •n Bobby James...............Editor-in-Chief Betty Byrd..............Business Manager We of the 1957 Blue Devil Staff have worked long and hard to make our edition of St.John’s annual the best ever published. The pictures and words that fill these pages mean much to all of us at St. John’s and will mean even more in later years. We sincerely hope that reading this annual will revive for you many happy memories-- memories that will never fade. BLUE DEVIL STAFF NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY ...........President ......Vice President Secretary-Treasurer JoAnne Dewitt . . . Edwin Williamson Joyce Anne Medlin The National Honor Society of St. John’s recognizes those students who have excelled in scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Many regard membership in this organization as the greatest honor that high school can offer . The students who attain this honor are expected to uphold the standards and high ideals of our school at all times, and to make St. John’s proud of them. I ft BULLETIN STAFF Beverly Spears.........Editor-in-Chief Bobby James.....................Editor Vivian Booth.........Business Manager Had you been present when the Bulletin Staff members were preparing their monthly copy .you would have witnessed alot of fun along with the work. Someone may have remarked to a fellow- writer, “I need a good news story. Go jump out the window. Don’t just sit there ---q uickly , man!” No, they weren’t really mentally unbalanced. It was just their effort to give the students a paper to enjoy. John’s student or- ganizations are these which serve our school and community. The first group--marshals, office proctors, and mental contestants--serve within the school by acting in graduation exercises, doing office work, and winning honors for St. John's. Others serve outside the school. Many important community jobs are done by the Bus Drivers and T I Club members. At the same time the B. F. L., F. T. A. and F . F . A . pre- pare students to render valuable services in the future for our community. In many cases these students take upon themselves some of the many difficult tasks that the teachers would otherwise have to per- form. Then these clubs are just what you are looking for, as many students have already discovered. For the student who has acting ability, there are the Dramatics groups. Members of the De- bate Team are learning the art of presenting their ideas verbally. And our May Day Com- mittee works hard each year to bring to the student body one of St. John’s most beautiful pre- sentations. MASTERS OF MUSIC DIRECTOR Mr. Ralph Finn John's Blue Devil Band.
