CLASS HISTORY May 3, 1975 Dear Mr. Cain, I am collecting material fora book about my school days and am wondering if I can get some information from you, I would like to know what happened between the fall of 1950 and the spring of 1955 that had a permanent effect on St, John' s, Also, I would appreciate a list of the addresses and married names of several members of the class of '55, Sincerely, Ann Davidson May 10, 1975 Dear Ann, I am happy to send you the information that you requested, In the year '50-'51 Spanish and Art courses were added to the curriculum, cold water fountains were installed, and the reading room was added to the library. In '51-'52 Mr. H.A. Marshall resigned as superintendent of the Darlington schools, The year '52-'53 saw Mr, D.L. Holley appointed Superintendent in the Darl- ington Area, And it was in this year that our now famous guidance program had its beginning, In '53-'54 a then modern shop building, a cafeteria, and the Brunson-Dargan Building fan addition to the grammar schooljwere constructed, In my opinion, of course, the girls' state tennis cham- pionship in '51 and the boys' state tennis title in '52 were of great importance, Enclosed is the list you requested. Sincerely, William Cain May 18, 1975 Dear high-school classmate, I am collecting material for a book and would appreciate it if you will let me know what things you remember as being important during high school. I am enclosing a stamped, self-addressed envelope. Thank you, Ann Davidson The following are excerps from letters answering the above request: , , , Since I was a band member, I remember the first public appearance of the band under the direction of Mr, Hubbard in the fall of 1950, And then there was our wonderful trip to Wash- ington in '55 when Mr. Mautino was the director . . . Patsy Jernigan , , , The exciting Home-coming tradition started, I believe, invour sub-freshman year , . . Mrs, William L. Smith, Jr. . . . St.John' s baseball team won the'South Carolina Class A State championship from Clover in the spring of '50, In our senior year we had a winning football team .. . . Jimmy Dixon , , , In '53 we people from Society Hill became a part of St. .Iohn's . . . Frances Guy . . . I seem to remember only the funny things: the time Mr. Cain got locked in the book room and had to crawl around the ledge of the building to get outg and the day he and Mr, Holley caught a friend and me visiting John Langston in the hospital during school hours . . , Odell Lloyd . . . I remember doing a great deal of studying--but I'm glad now that I learned to work so hard . . . Dr. W, O. Weaver . . . I'm a bit sentimental--I like to think back about things like the Daisy Chain on Class Day and the Marshalls at Commencement, I remember the Junior-Senior we gave fthe Mardi Gras, I believe, and the glorious one given in our honor l Under the Sea j, I recall the hard work we put on practicing the The Charm School, our senior play . . , Mary Psillos . , , I rememberhow proud I was to be chosen for membership in the National Honor Society , , Vivian Bryant V June 5, 1975 Dear Ann, What a pleasant surprise to hear from you, I have often wondered what became of all our crowd. I don't suppose I'll ever know but didn't we have fun! In looking back I believe that those were the years that I first began to assume re sponsibility. I wish that I could thank my high school teachers fone or two in particulary for their patience and understanding, I am certain that my whole life has been affected by the outlook that I gained at St, .Iohn's, and I think of those years as among my happiest. Do let me hear from you again and be sure to tell me how your book comes out, Much love, Patsy Sturgeon Ann Davidson Clas s Historian
