We were one of the freshest and sometimes the stupidest class in the history of the school. But, while we had our bad points, we also had our good ones. We got a long with the teachers and upperclassmen. We didn't try to tear down the building and we didn't fly up and down the steps at a break-neck sp- eed. On the whole, I think our good faults outnumbered our bed ones. In September of '46 we came back from vacation and found several changes. The first---and one that affectei us most—was our new principal. Gorfc was ''Mias Suzy , as Miss Brunson was affectionately called, end in her place was Mr. Cain. A Mr. Cain with a Getchieville brogue and a you people for his classes. But, as much as we all missel Miss Brunson, we soon learned to like our new principal and to listen for his Jokes, told in a dry sarcastic tone of voice. Miss Brunson wasn't the only person we lost. Gone, too, was Mr. Daniels with his pinch on the cheek, which would sting for an hour in his place was Mr. Marshall. As in Mr. Cain's case we soon learned to know Mr. Marshall; he was sure to be in the wrong place at the time you least expected him. There was another change that year. We got Mr. Boggs, also. He is a good teacher but was likely at first to treat us as though we were in the army and at his command. He has quieted down some since he first came, and if you don't think so, ask any of those in his classes the first year. There is a difference---the voice of experience speaking. Well, things were quiet for us in our third year in high. Nothing very in- teresting happened during the school year, but in the summer we lost one of out dearest classmates, Agnes Moody. We were Juniors when we started back in September and very much consciencous of the fact. We Just had to lord it a little over the lowerclassmen. We rushed around the building looking very important. But the novelety wore off after awhile and we settled down to work. The Jr. Sr.---so we thought-—was the most fun and the nicest St. John's had ever seen. Everyone had a good time, with Slernie taking pictures to pass around the next week. Ed Tuberville's band really laid them in the aisles. Soon after the Jr. Sr. came exams and everyone rushing around getting ready for his part in the graduation exercises. The girls worrying about white dresses for the daisy chain and the boys wondering who all was going to the choosen to be marshalls. Well, we got the seniors off in a blaze of glory (thinking as we did that we were now the big wheels ) and started on our separate ways for vacation fun. Knowing that this would be the last vacation we would have as high school students made the summer go faster than ever before and caused us to enjoy it more. As all good things have to end sometimes, summer drew to a close and here in its place was fall with school opening. We were dignified seniors now. We must act more sophisticated; more mature. We saw many changes this last year. The Student Council has been firmly set on its feet. The Snack Bar at recess has been instituted. And we, this class, has assured the following classes an annual by working for one this year. We were amazed at having an assistant coech---and such a good-looking one. too----when foot- ball season opened. Yes, the times are changing and St. John's with them. We've all had so much fun this last year and I know all the seniors feel, as I do, a little sad at seeing it go. We've been happy and blue, silly and sad dur- ing our five years at St. John's. We are sorry all of the class that started aren't finishing with us. We, the strong and daring (we passed Miss Entzminger's English, didn't weT), have mansged to graduate. We are, as I've said, a little sorry to go, but, again as I've said before, all good things have to end some- time. So7 with a grateful thank you f or all the many things St. John's, beloved faculty has done for us, with a fond farewell, we leave. I'd like to be connected with Peggy Jean Hoffmeyer at 0253876 in Darlington, South Carolina, please. What wae that? Oh I yes, I believe I would like to have technicolor today. Tftank you. Hel-l-l-o Peggy. What are you doing on this first day of June in 1960? I just had to talk to you. I know we prom- ised not to call each other but once a month, but I Just had to see you. Since Cecil Hamer and Ted Purvis invented tech- nicolor for television-telephones, I Just had to let you see this luscious dress I bought at Jane McKee's exclusive dress shop, The Bald Wind Key, over on Fifth Avenue. It looked so good on Dorothy Collins, her chief model, that I just could- n't resist buying it. Do you think it will look all right to wear to Betty Anne Coker's concert tonight? She Just returned from giving a series of them in Europe. Don Small brought her back in that Swimming Train of his. He was always thinking of crazy things back in school, remember? l«t me tell you about last night. I went to the opening of John Willi- amson's new night club, The Barbared Owl . He had the most divine opening pro- gram. Val Nance and his orchestra furnished the music for the evening while Bettr- Register sang some of those new popular songs that H.M. Anderson has been writ- ing. Well, Miriam, that sounds as if you really had a grand time. John McKel- vey owns the Darlington Theatre here in Darlington now, and it really does look snazzy after the remodeling job he gave it. Theo Jordon is his secretary and I heard that she can really make a typewriter get up and go. Did you know that Billy Simpson has completely taken over Van Johnson's pl- ace in Holly wood? He starred with Peggy Anne Baxley in that new production, The Great Lovers. Hoyte Flowers designed the clothes for it. He designs all the clothes for M©tro-Goldwyn-Mayer now. It seems that Darlington is well represented In Hollywood these days. It's hard to believe that we were all classmates Just ten years ago. Yes, Peggy, it certainly does. While I was down in Washington last week, I saw Helen Coggeshall. She seems to be doing very well as the first woman presi - dent of the United States. She's getting ready to tour the country for the elec- tion in November. I heard that it's going to be a tough election, with Robert Dixon representing the Dixiecrats running against her. Well, all I can say is, may the best one win. Franklin Sessoms is comming along fine with the governor- ship of South Carolina, too. Believe it or not, Miriam, the city of Darlington now has a population of 125,000. Gene Harrison is Mayor, and he's doing a grand Job of It. Jerry Bose- manowwns the new radio station, S.J.H.S., and Sarah Josey is his chief announcer. •Sounds wonderful, Peggy Jean. I bet it doesn't even look like the same pl- ace. Jimmie Lou Huggins Is now directing television shows up here in New York. I told you the last time I called you that I was going to Annapolis for a week- end. Well, you can Imagine my amazement when I learned that John Meggs was the head man at present. Weldon Odom has been trying to graduate from there for the past five years. He can't seem to pass sewing. Maybe he'll make It soon. By the way, Peggy, what is Billy Iseman doing these days? Well, Miriam, I'll tell you. It's like this. He never could find anything to do, so he decided to take over the Blue Goose. He's enlarged it now and it takes up the whole block. Miriam, you would have never guessed that some of our fellow students were so intelligent. Kenneth Carter teaches agriculture at Clemson College, and James Belissary has taken Frank Howard’s place as coach. I was in Columbia last week, and I ran up with Betty Howie and Cannie Ruth Byrd. Betty is head of the Physics Department at the University of South Caro- lina and Cannie Ruth teaches French. Maybe that accounts for the increase in Physics and French majors. Brace yourself for this next one, Miriam. Bill Dennis is now principal of dear ole St. John's High. I heard that the first official action he took after It becoming principal was to destroy, completely, all hie own high school grades. Well, Peggy, I must say. That is a suprise. By the way, are you still planning to fly up to see me next weekend? You shouldn't be afraid to fly up on The Silver Streak with Don Blackmon and Cecil Byrd as co-pilots and Grace Thomas as their charming stewardess. You’ll certainly be in safe hands. I went to see the Mrs. America contest last month. Those judges really knew what they were doing when they picked Grace Blackmon as the winner. She introduced me to her husband, but 1 Just can't remember his name. Ersklne Grig was one of the judges. You've probably heard about his modeling studios. Sal- lie Ervin is his highest paid model and has just been elected Pin-up Queen of 1960 . Good going, huh. I'll say it's good going, Miriam. Cleva ae Oliver and Geneva Cooke, along with their husbands, have opened up a dating agency here in Darlington to help the ones who weren't as lucky as they were. Dorothy Weatherford has taken Miss Entzminger's place as English teacher at St. John's. She helps Sarah Jean Flowers write gossip columns for the News and Press . Sarah Jean works at the Post Office, sot hat she can collect enough material to put into her column. wPe8gy you remember Janson Booth don't you? He came to St. John's from Con- way in the middle of our senior year back in 1950. Well, he and Tommy Yates are co-editors of Esquire . I hear they're the two most sought-after bachelors in town. Merle Baxley is also editor of the New York Times . He is nationally famous for his column on Interesting Facts About Morticians and Women. Speak- ing of writing, Clelia Garrison has Just finished her latest book- What to Do When You Feel Faint. It really is selling like mad. The 1960-All-American Pro Football Team has Just been announced and Billy Evans made it again for the ninth consecutive year. He's still playing for the New York Giants, you know, and ten years is a mighty long time to star in Pro Football. Speaking of playing ball reminds me-did you know that Calvin Clifton is still playing with the Cleveland Indians and is also the paid baseball play- er? Pat McGill is their secretary and treasurer now. Baseball always did seem to interest her. Sara Sweet Evans owns The Sweet Dancing School up here now, and I heard that her pupils can really shake a leg . She was a grand dancer back In high school, remember? I certainly do, Miriam. Did I tell you that Betty Lou Morris and Eleanor Norwood are now living out west with their husbands who are explorers? Billie Davis Is also living In the west. She's out in Reno for six weeks getting her third divorce. It's been said there's a man for every woman , but she's be- ginning to doubt it. Dick McKelvey and Alan Hudson own some kind of shop out in California. Their motto is: If we can't fix It, nobody can. So, if you need anything repaired. Just let 'em know. Elizabeth Watson keeps their books, and she says they really are raking In the dough . Ellen Pearl Flowers dropped in to see me yesterday. She Is .so happy since she became manager of the famous resort in Bermuda. She told me that Buddy Hudd son Just won the contest for being the slowest person in the United States. He got a gold turtle and a trip around the world. Can you Imagino that? Itls hard to believe, Peggy. I guess we've done as much damage as we can to the bill this month. Wait a minute, before you hang up. I forgot to tell you that Lucretia McKey is the country's most prized debater these days. The Senate Is thinking about hiring her for their filibusters. We'll Just have to stop all this gossiping for now before I go broke trying to pay the bill. Don't forget to call me next month, so we can catch up on all the latest news about the class of 1950.
