CLASS PROPHECY Class of 1949 Springtime with Its many voices beckoned us Into the open. We strolled down Spain Street Into the Park, enjoying the new freshness of the season. The last rays of the evening sun hardly penetrated the thick foliage, casting an eerie light throughout the forest. We hastened our footsteps In the direotlon of home when we heard muffled footfalls behind us. Turning, we saw In tattered clothes an old hag bent over her walking-stick. Her cackle rang through the forest as she gllirpsed the terror In our eyes. Fear rooted us to the spot and we were un- able to run as she advanced slowly toward us. Peering for a moment into our startled faces, she cackled again and thrust a small box Into our trembling hands. Without a word she turned and disappeared Into the gathering darkness. Our hearts in our mouths, we fled swiftly out of the park and safely home. After sitting awhile in the bright cheerfulness of the living room, we summoned enough courage to open the box. From the box we took a wrinkled sheet of paper. This is what we read: June 7, 1959 Dear Betsy and Betty Carol, You will be very surprised to find this letter to you dated 1959, but as it seems, this is the prophecy of you and your classmates of the Class of 1949. As I was gazing in my crystal ball last night, this was revealed to me: Roy Peavey is now No. 1 basketball coach of the U. S. His team has won the National Championship for the past three years. June and Emmett are married and are raising horses to enter each year in the Kentucky Derby. Dot Goodson, fashion editor of the women’s magazine, Gaze , has been voted one of the ten best-dressed women in the U. S. for 1959. Voight Gandy is head of the S.P.C.A.-—Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals. Norman Richardson and Wayne Weaver are hard at work on a French grammar with a new accent • Betty Lyles is the successful inventor of a new work-saving device that is taking the country by storm. Demonstrating this kitchen device are Betty Kinsey and Blondell Warren. You would never guess it, but Ina Claire Pryant is a stewardess for Delta Airlines. Lexie Stokes, head of the Historical Society of South Carolina, is writing a New History of S. C. to be taught in all S. C. schools. Billy Trapp and Louise Martin are on a concert tour in Europe. Jeannette Dickson is the newest member of the Jimmy Durante show. Together they are Television’s No. 1 laugh-team. Madeline Davis and her famous musician husband are directing a mixed chorus heard every Sunday over a nation-wide network. Doris Adams and Barbara Knight are teaching anatomy to nurses at Duke Hospital. Edwin Yarborough, South Carolina’s youngest senator, is noted for his filibustering. Joyce Elmore taught kindergarten for a few years, then married a rich widower with five children. Orin and Perry Andrews own a large farm and are living happily with their families . Virginia Flowers is busily raising little Howies— LaVerne, the fighting woman editor, heads the excellent staff of Crowley’s Tribune. The heads of her business staff are Marcell Ludlam and Marilyn Weatherford. Billy Bates is a prominent druggist in Columbia, is business in- creased so rapidly when he invented a miraculous beauty lotion that made old maids of forty-five look like sweet sixteen again, that he had to take Billy Leopard on as a partner. Billy Rogers resides in Wew York, where he has a correspondence school of lovemaking by mail ---he guarantees success in six easy lessons. Cleo Atkinson operates the Matrimonial Bureau in artsville. She is happily married to one of her applicants. 19
