The opening of the 1946 Football season also brought the return of our old friend, Gene Augusterfer, one of the all-time greats of St. .Iohn's, as head football coach. He had able assistants in the persons of joe Gallagher, Tom Chisari, and Duane Sanders, all of whom were instrumental in the commendable work done by the gridders. The '46 schedule was no pushover, and this fact, plus bad breaks, gave us a season percentage of slightly under .500, but the record by no means shows the fine quality of the team, but even underrates the performances of the players. The season's initial contest with Calvert Hall of Baltimore, for example, was a close fought game throughout, with the Alohnnies coming Ollt on the short end of a I3-I2 count, even though they had led at the half, I2-0. They out-played the Cardinals for the majority of the game, but the breaks turned against them in the Hnal quarter, and they had to be content with a loss on that bleak Saturday afternoon at Catholic U. Stadium. The following week the Charlotte Hall gridders visited our domain, and were handed their first loss of the season by the light Vermont Avenuer's. The Hallsters were a heavy favorite to take the Cadets as they outweighed SJC 20 pounds to the man, but the Johnnies turned the tables and rocked them by the inspiring score of 12-0. XVith this victory under their belts, the Cadets traveled to the YVestern gridiron in a vain attempt to break the two-year winning streak the Raiders held over them. But again misfortune struck. The game was not yet five minutes old when the Raiders got to pay dirt. A blocked kick gave the ball to them deep in Cadet territory, and it was just routine to cross the goalvline. Only diminutive Hotsy O'Meara's six-pointer early in the second quarter saved the Cadets from a shutout. Final score: St. Iohn's 6, Wfestern 13. .- A Y 69 The Cadets, eager to gain a much-needed victory, entertained the Georgetown Prep Squad and defeated them at C. U. Stadium, 14-6. jack George intercepted a pass on the Prep 35 and raced to six-point territory just after the opening of the second stanza. Third quarter scoring was by Aloe Kidwell, stalwart SIIG tackle, who tackled I'i1n1ny Beyer in Prep's end zone for a safety. The clincher was applied by Knute Flanery, who smacked over from the two-yard stripe in the fading minutes of play. The Cadets made it two in a row by trounc- ing a revived Roosevelt on the Rider's home grounds, 28-12. Knute Flanery again hit his stride and crossed the Rider goal twice during the course of the tussle. Hotsy O'Meara and Dave XValdron each came through with one touchdown. Bob XVeiss added four points from placement. as . Q V Qiygwkl M ui ' , Q XA 'S S Q In a Hallowe'en Special the Cadets met defeat again, this time at the hands of the powerful Central Vikings, to the tune of l3-0. The fine running of Ross Keith and Jimmy Panor seemed too much for the Cadets to cope with, and another game was lost. Another loss was the injury suffered by Hotsy O'Meara, which was destined to sideline him for the remainder of the season, except for a few minutes in the Gonzaga clash. The next game was with the green Chamberlain aggregation. It turned out, as was predicted, to be a struggle between the Chamberlain regulars and the Cadet second and third-stringers. The Scarlet and Gray clad youngsters scored live touchdowns and added three placements before time ran out. Poch, Flanery, XV:1ldron, Miller, and XVeiss scored T.D.'s while YVeiss made the three free points. mg-I F n ,4- - . , , ' ,' -'JZ-,L Vg ' Q ,uw ,f .. .H , -L xghwx--e,b,x f ig ' .' gg -,- - 4-,,-I? 4f.f 1-'ti'-g . ' neunbap 9l?i.LcY'sastr0Y 0' Nh. . 1946 - 4 7 ZZMMLQK The outlook for the coming basketball season was in doubt as the first practice was held in November, directed by joe Gallagher. Mr. Gallagher was serving in the absence of head coach Gene Augusterfer, who was busy on the coaching staff of the All-Prep Squad. The biggest problem was to hnd someone who could step into the shoes left vacant by the graduation of colorful Tommy Gletner, last year's team captain and high-scorer. The team captainship went unanimously to Brad Pusey, star center on the squad since his freshman year. But the ray of light appeared in the form of jack George, of All-High fame. Coach Augusterfer noted .Iack's ability to hit the cords with regularity, and this talent later proved to be an important asset in the Cadets' quest of fame. The opening game was with St. Paul's. The Cadets started Jack George and Lee Ford at forwards, Brad Pusey at center, and Vince Durkin and Arrel Weaver at the guard slots. Billy Martins, rated by many, even before the first game, as the finest defensive guard in the city, was on the bench until the Cadets needed his stellar ability. The Cadets then went on to overwhelm St. Paul's by 54-21. Pusey and George paced the first win with 18 and 14 points respectively. 74 in The Cadets went on the rampage, taking Mt. Rainier by 64-13, and then dropping the Anacostia Indians, 5042. George was busy taking high-scoring honors in both meetings. lVith three victories in a row, the Cadets played host to their star-studded Alumni. After starting off like a ball of hre, the varsity seeined to cool down, and, after letting a big half-time lead slip through their hngers, found the count tied at 3-1-all at the end ol' the regular playing tilne. ln the sudden death period the Alutnni, led by '1'onnny Gletner and jim Cieble, sent six points through the inet, while hold- ing the varsity to four, to hand the Cadets their hrst loss. Two more schools topped the -Iohnnies before they could snag their fourth win. Coolidge, the defending interliigh Champs, beat the Cadets on a strong fourth quarter rally, 38-25, on the Colts' hotne boards. 'l he Scarlet and Gray Basketeers visited Central High and were nosed out 33-32 in a game that was noted for its intense fury and the close- ness of play. Ji W Y , K ,Y A. , X af' ' ,,gDA'? This year the team is paced by such sharpshooters as Captain Bud Soucy, Manager Dick Scarlf, McVeigh, Phillip and Gallagher, through whose outstanding shooting the team has won four straight victories without a defeat. The team started its victorious season with a victory over Charlotte Hall and then followed through with a smashing defeat of Staunton Military Academy-1381-134-l. The following week the team traveled to Annapolis for the big match of the year against the Navy Plebes. lt was a closely' fought match but the Cadets won with a score of 1361 to 1339. The next match was with Massanutten Military Academy on the Cadets' own range. Once again as in two, seasons, the .lohnnies came out the victors by a score ol' 1361-1243. N Early in March the Cadets will travel to Maryland University where they will fire for .National honors. From the looks of the scores thus far we feel confident that the Cadets will once again place high among the top teams of the nation. f ' I G .11 ....o .J-,gt 1---Q' 5 M, !' To the everlasting credit of the staff of TAPS '47 be it said that they were willing to tackle a diffi- cult assignment without benefit of the know-how but with a willingness to learn, devotion and energy to spare. This book is the product of many willing hands and loyal hearts-its contributors range from the Principal and Faculty, down through the student body to the newest student, and out into the busi- ness and professional world. Venturing upon the new VIBRATONE process, we have endeavored to throw added em- phasis upon pictures in the belief that one look is worth a thousand guesses. From class to cafeteria, on parade and at ease, at his devotions, study and at play, the St. -Iohn's cadet is presented in his real guise: the typical American boy preparing himself for responsible citizenship. May the story told by TAPS '47, be a treasured memory to the seniors who are graduating, a saga full of in- spiration and hope to the cadets who will follow down through the years of St. John's history of service to America's youth. In the philosophy of education of the Christian Brothers, religious and char- acter formation hold hrst rank. Subscribing as they do to the Catholic Philosophy ol Life and therefore to the Catholic concept of education it follows that the training of the individual to principles of Christian Morality is the main objective of the 1,11 Sallian System. Early in the school year the entire student body went on retreat for three days. These three days were spent in silence and deep religious thought. A large selection of religious pamphlets and hooks were put at our disposal and visits to the Blessed Sacrament were encouraged and facilitated by keeping the Blessed Sacrament in St. Joseplrs Hall. An integral part of the program is the Religion class. Classes are begun by the recitation of a portion of the Holy Rosary. After a brief reflection the lesson opens with Il review of the last discussion. Then .xgclfiuilfiw follows the formal presentation of the teacher during which all are free to ques- tion. Lastly is the discussion by the class and the assignment. In four years we com- pletely cover the fields of Christian Dogma, Moral, VVorship, Church History, a detailed study of the Mass, and in our last year Christian Apologetics and modern probf lems in religion. Most popular religious club is the Arch- confraternity of the Divine Child which holds monthly discussions and sponsors the Vocation Day Mass. Membership in the Catholic Students Mission Crusade and the Sodality are also encouraged. Periodically Catholic leaders address the upper classes on current religious problems. To the good Christian Brother, our teacher, and to many priest we have met at St. -Iohn's during our high school years We offer our sincere expression of thanks. They have been our constant inspiration. May our lives reflect the good principles they have inspired by their example. ST X - . Sp lhkllmn 'Ymf YORKLOTTFN 'Ah e Den ST! OHN n mv Cxass CON, LU CX? The SABRIQ has niaintaincrl its IllCllll1Cl'illilJ in good standing with thc N.S.l'..X.. thc Quill and Scroll Society. and thc C2.S.l'..X. It has been well rcprcscntcil at the annual conventions of thcsc societies and at thc annual Convention of thc D. C, and Maryland Catholic Scholastic journalism Society. Thus. thc SABRE has complctcml anolhcr out- stzinmlingly successful year an thc of- ficial wpokcslnan of Saint lohn's, 5577445 Since training in Catholic Action forms such an integral part of our Religious Education, it is only logical that St. .Iohn's should take an active part in the Catholic Students Mission Crusade. This organization is the Catholic Action society for Catholic high school students in XVashington. This group has for its purpose the promoting of Mission work. Its inspira- tion is derived from many talks from either local members of the clergy, repre- sentatives of prominent Religious Orders, or actual returned missionaries. Our School has been honored this year in a special way. David Burke, one of our more prominent Seniors was elected and served as City-wide President for the I9-16-47 school year. Dave did a splendid job with exceptional responsia bilities attached. The outstanding achievement socially ol' this splendid organ- ization was the Animal C.S.M.S.C. NVinter Ball. The Olhcers for the S..I.C. chapter are President, David Burke, Vice Presi- dent, Anthony Bohorfoush: Secretary and Treasurer, Sam Jackson. ramczfic Back Razr: XV. Baxter, F. Boller, A. Martinelli, D. Hessler, D. Metzger. Another new activity around Saint -Iohn's this year is the Dramatic's Club. Under the very able direction of Brother Gerard Justin this club has progressed very successively. All of us are well acquainted with the splendid play which the club pro- duced this year, Lucifer's Lodge, but probably few appreciate the hours of rehearsal and preparation which were necessary for its production. Dramatics is one of the finest extra-curricula activities with which any high school student can associate himself, and our members bear out this fact. It has been a perfect activity from the standpoint of affording enjoyment for its enthusiastic members and its done a swell job in affording experience in speaking and public address. The cast and their director are deserving of the highest praise for a job well done. 96 lfLl'LL0l l 0l'VL 5-4 Q . x lk if' H JY ll , ss J aiu' ,lw l x. xaq -,, ,vi .,, lv , 4 I '-' 'V .fig S vs . If the Mother's Club of St. Johns were required to adopt a motto, it would un- doubtedly paraphrase the famous slogan of the Postal Service and come forth with The Mother's Club mlst go through, or words to like effect. Certainly, its record for the scholastic year 1946-47 would justify this expression of its spirit and willing- ness to spare no effort in the attainment of its primary objective of promoting a high degree of coordination between the faculty, students and parents of St. Johns for the mutual advancement of all. In the sphere of social activities the Mother's Club sponsored two principal events, the Sabre Party in November, and the animal Card Party in january. Its principal business venture was the rafiling of a Bendix Mlasher. Altogether, the year proved to be one of the most successful in the history of the Mother's Club. In large measure this success was due to the initia- tive and untiring endeavors of Mrs. An- thony Bohorfoush, XVays Sc Means Chair- man, and the members of her Staff. To all those who so generously supported its activities during the school year, the lNIother's Club gratefully acknowledges its indebtedness and appreciation.
