The most highly organized group of activities at St. john's is the Religion program. ln the philosophy of edu- cation of the Christian Brothers, religious and character formation hold first rank. Subscribing as they do to the Catholic Philosophy of Life and therefore to the Catholic concept of education it follows that the training of the individual to principles of Christian Morality is the main objective of the La Sallian System. Early in the school year the entire student body went on retreat for three days. These three days were spent in silence and deep religious thought. A large selection of religious pamphlets and books were put at our disposal and visits to the Blessed Sacrament were encouraged and facilitated by keeping the Blessed Sacrament in St. Josephs Hall. The retreat master was Father Conrad, C.P. whose inspiring talks prepared us for the year to follow. Every two weeks our friends from St. Anselm's Priory, the good Benedictine Fathers hear the confessions of the entire school in preparation for the Frst Friday and the Vocation Day Mass and Communion. Mass and Commun- ion followed by Benediction is our monthly offering to the Sacred Heart. The integral part of the program is the Religion class. Five times a week full fifty minutes are devoted to this activity. Classes are begun by the recitation of a portion of the Holy Rosary. After a brief reflection the lesson opens with a review of the last discussion. Then follows the formal presentation by the teacher during which all are free to question. Lastly is the discussion by the class and the assignment. Religious guidance is given by each home room teacher who acts as adviser to the members of his class. Personal chats after school hours prove very helpful. Brother F. Leo, li.S.C. conducts the course in vocational guidance for all Freshmen. Most popular religious club is the Archconfra- ternity of the Divine Child which holds monthly discussions and sponsors the Vocation Day Mass. Membership in the Catholic Students Mission Crusade and the Sodality are also encouraged. Periodically Catholic leaders address the upper classes on current religious problems. The religious program is completed in the fourth year when we make the closed retreat at Manresa-onfthe-Severn. This year it was our good fortune to have as retreat master liather Louis A, Xwheeler, whose gentle manner and soul-inspiring conferences will long be rememberd, Rising at 6:30 the day at Manresa is filled with religious activities.
