B1Sh0p of Paterson lu his office at the Chancery, our Bishop calls a halt in his husy clay to spculc with the editors of the Chimes. 6 Embodied in the saintly character of Bishop Iames A. McNulty are all thc qualities indicative of a true successor of the apostles. As the ecclesiastical head of the Diocese of Paterson, he was our spiritual counselor, and as a man of wisdom we turned to him for guidance in secular matters as Wcll. Although a busy man with his many executive duties, he always found time to take an interest in our social and academic events. As Christ is to the Catholic Church, so is the pastor to his parish. XVith each year spent in St. john's we have come to know our pastor, Monsignor YValtcr H. Hill, in a more intimate way. Al- though his concern is mainly with the financial and spiritual well being of the parish, he cannot he separated from our student activities. The name, Monsignor Hill, is almost synonymous with St. Iohnis. Right Reverend Monsignor WALTER H. HILL, M.A., LL.ll Monsignor and the ex- ecutives of the Knights of St. john's Ned Hall, jim Crane and Matt Clarken. l Spiritual Director, Athletic Director, Director of Activities, you name it - that was Father Hart. To what better businessman could a junior bring his Prom troubles, a senior, his activity plans, and a ballplayer, his excuses? The real meaning of a friend is one who gives of himself, one who can be trusted with the most intimate prob- lems. Father Hart was such a friend to all of us. Reverend MICHAEL F. HART A smiling threesome in the inner sanc- tum give evidence that all is under control: Father Hartg Chimes Sports Editor, Ned Hall and Varsity Basket- ball Captain, Joe Ajjan. 8 rw v-m-wwrv man R R 5 Reverend Although his duties are concerned with the grammar school, Father Murray was a familiar sight about the high school. His youthful appearance and interests immediately made him a friend of all. His enthusiasm as ath- letic director of the grammar school and moderator of the C.Y.O. team won for him the Whole-hearted sup- port of the student body. JAMES H. MURRAY Father Murray chides his ace rebounder, Ray NIeCrogan, while Tom Nlenshon lends sleepy support. 9 FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATIUN TC'iIClli'l'S are iiiflucntiirl pvoplc. This change is brought about by the action of the seas and rivers on the surface of the earth. On her vast face, wind, water, sand, ice and frost are wearing down rocks, building soil here, washing it away there. And apparently unaware of all this, the earth whirls merrily on its axis while rushing headlong around the sun. Never for a single moment is everything still. Earth is man,s home and he is intensely curious to learn more about its wonders. Down through the cen- turies he has discovered many things about his home - its size, its weight fbetween 6 and 7 sextillion tonsj, its climate. He has dug deep into its crust, but as yet has not come anywhere near probing its molten heart. Since a great deal that could be learned of this planet Earth is still a mystery, men of science, in a concerted effort during I.C.Y., will attempt to fathom the secrets which have remained hidden from us so long. Their quest for greater knowledge is prompting them to attempt to find an answer to such questions as: VVhat is the exact shape of our home? Do the continents move and at what rate? Is earth's climate getting warmer? Can distances be more accurately measured? Can earthquakes be predicted so that lives may be saved? The answer to these questions and many more be- sides, have, since eternity, been in the infinite mind of the Creator. NVith His help and guidance, and more surely His permission, our Cod-fearing and Cod-loving Men of Science will find the answers. 1 N? wr Eg! 47 Jw 'J' 1, ' 0 ' fi U I 9 irqivili Q fi W ,E S-,Q is I' ' x 4 'fir' V' Q I ,y -, 7-1313 ' 1 -27.5 1 S H 'A is S f m Q . 4 V-5: s A 5 mt. , v A,,.. 4 '- .A . 7 5 A'-, . 1 L vm sv . Sister Margaret Miriam supervises the Chimes typing staff. 26 CHIMES STAFF Putting together even the smallest essay, as you all probably know, is not always an easy task. Think then of the enormous effort that must be put into a publication such as your Chimes. As the first few months of school rolled by, the staff soon came to realize that there was more work than glamor in the yearbook business. NVe spent long hours behind pencils and paper, and even while sleeping, The Chimes prodded our im- agination. Now that the pencils and brown envelopes have been put away and the finished product has come off the presses, we look back and enjoy the result of our labors. YVe have, in this task, gained some knowledge of writing and publishing, but we have gained more in coming to know how to work with one another. 27 Mass. RETREAT Our days of retreat at St. Iohn's are always of great importance. During this time of prayer and penance, we strive to bring ourselves closer to Our Divine Lord, and ask Him to grant us many favors, as well as thank Him for His many blessings. One of the favors we asked for this year was that we would have peace in the world, so that mankind could live apart physically, hut remain together spiritually. During this atomic age it is also essential to pray that 'the many scientific advancements of our times will not he used for the destruction of mankind, but rather for its betterment. VVe feel that we are very fortunate to be living in this age, but we also Whether in the pulpit or out, Father Adrian's priestly spirit could not help but bring us closer to Our Lord. realize that it is a time which could endanger our souls. VVhile making this retreat, we asked Cod to guide us in choosing our place in life so that we might more readily attain personal peace. This year we had the great privilege of hav- ing Father Adrian Brennan, O.F.M. Conv., conduct our retreat. His jovial manner, kind un- derstanding, and true priestly spirit, enabled us to make our last retreat at Saint john's one that will never be forgotten. -J' Chimes Editor-in-Chief. lohn Lech, gays Au revoir to Father Adrian, while Sports Editor, Ned Hall, gives him an assist. ln the sat-ristv after Mass, our rt-tn-.it master gives his priestly blessing to the Semor Knights who served his daily Father Adrian and most of the seniors gather on the lawn for what appears to be some lively chatter. .' It is a fitting month, too, since nature in renew- ing itself at this time of the year, pre- sents us with a sweetness and splendor that befits the Mother of Cod. To all of us at St. johnis, May Crowning time is our special time of publicly venerat- ing the Mother of Cod. Here, to show our love and appreciation, we crown her Queen of our Hearts. STUDENT COUNCIL Through the able leadership of its president, George Ced, and the guidance of Sister Marion joseph, the 1957-1958 Student Council has estab- lished a fine model of student government. The success of the Magazine Drive and Parents Day, was due, in large part, to the backing of the Student Council. The everyday incidentals such as hall and fire traffic control and litterbug campaigns, were carried out by the representatives of the council. The Student Council, in itself, has provid- ed for all its members a chance to show and to learn the responsibilities required of a leader. In a lifetime man can see mountains whittled away and mountains being made, islands appearing and islands disappearing. The land, which is only one-third of the earth's surface, has been man's home for a million years. It has sheltered him and it has also destroyed him. It is the intent of ICY to study earth's landed face and depths. From the knowledge gained our scientists may make our world a safer place in which to live. Although the Varsity did not place in the top three , after annexing the Conference title last year, they showed enough spirit to defeat among others, St. Bonis and St. Mary's, her traditional and spirited rivals. Leading this year's team was Captain joe Ajjan, a six-foot senior. As chief rebounder, he sparked the team with a 15.5 average. joe topped off his record by making first team All-Conference and the Conference All-Star Team. Ceorge Qliabel Di Pasquale, a 5, 9M soph- omore, placed second in the scoring columns. lVith an 8. average for the season, he led St. johns to victory over Paterson Vocational High School, and scored the most points in one game this year by net- ting 24 against St. Maryis. Art Allen, the tiger of the court, though not an impressive scorer, was the top de- fensive player and key man in many plays. His speed and set shot made him a good choice on the Conference All-Star Team. Rounding out the 'istarting fivei' were Senior George Ced, who was used primarily for his speed and durability, and junior jerry Clinton, who was fairly accurate with his one hand push shot. On the bench were five underclassmen who will surely brighten the Piambleris fu- ture: six footers Fred Reihl, Bob Batistoni, and Ray Doychak, and speedsters lim NVilliams and Richard Shagwert. Mr. james Comerford completed his tenth year as head coach of the Ramblers, during which time he compiled the envi- able record of five Passaic-liergen Catholic Conference Championships. The Chimes as well as all those who have played under his able direction extend their heartiest congratulations to the coach on his anniver- sary. After three years of enthusiastic super- vision, Father Hart has proved himself indispensable to the team as a morale builder and devoted spiritual director. The duet look forward to a successful 158359 campaign. George Ged Q51 trailed by three leading Gaels chalk: up two points on the scoreboard. St. lohn's won the game 53-50. 51 The referem-'s usual pro-game conference with the opposing team captains nearly winds up a stalemate as Captain joe Ajjan quizzes the masters. joe Ajjan takes on two fighting Gaels, Bill Hague 133 awaits the ball, while Fred lleihl, behind Ed Yreeswick LID does a little handwork on his ITIHTI, in the season opener against St. Nlary's. FRESHMAN TEAM Sporting an over-all record of 11 wins and 4 losses and a league record of 10 and 1, the Saint john Frosh captured the first Passaic Bergen Catholic Conference League title. The spark of this year's team was Ray Doychak who averaged 16.6 points per game. Charles Reinhardt, whose height makes him a good rebounder, and Duane Szczechowicz, chief playmaker of the squad, were factors in bringing home the title. The team was rounded out by Tom Clinton, Richard Intile, Bill Kearney, George Homsany, Bill Kamphausen, Emery Kutney, john Parisi and Robert Pohlman. The success of the freshman squad, which cap- tured the Freshman Catholic Conference Cham- pionship, was made possible by the untiring efforts and ability of Mr. john Baker. Coach Baker is a graduate of St. johnls and of Panzer College and was high scorer on the 1941 Oliver Street Quintet which garnered the State Crown that year. 56 Coach Iohn Baker and Father Hart were well pleased with the success of the first St, John's Freshman Team. Man is just beginning to make his first sonndings into the dark abyss of outer space. First, with the tiny telescope, then with the largest of all astro- nomical eyes, the two hundred inch llall telescope on Mount Palomar in California, and now with rockets and satellites scientists are slowly unveiling the mysteries of outer space. NVith Explorers and Sputniks racing about outer space, our Mother Earth is really beginning to look small indeed. Problems and challenges for menls minds and spirits will never cease to be, however, we, the Class of 1958, pray and hope that We will be not just the equal to these problems and challenges, but more important, their masters.
