The feeling of importance came over us, we certainly were happy. Then came French, geometry and biology-disecting and bisecting. Maintenant nous parlons francais. These, things didn't make us unhappy, but they did make us realize how very little we really knew- how much we had yet to learn. . Examinations came in January, 'accompanied with some joy and much suffering. We breathed much easier when they were over. , Our Mission Activities during the year were manyg helping South American Missions, ransoming pagan babies during Lent, and doing many other things. ' I Basketball was one of our greatest interests. There was a large repre- sentation of pupils from 10A at every game. ,We were proud of our team,- especially after they brought the Hin Trophy back to where it belongs. Our first year is over, and we don't pretend we are sorry-we are. We endured the tortures of the Feshrnan Dance which consisted of the wearing of green ties for the boys, and pigtails with green ribbons for the girls. With the expert help of our very capable teachers we took algebra and Latin in our stride. We cheered through our many victories with our very efficient basketball team. I, a . 4 E The sun shone encouragingly that memorable morning in September as we, the Freshmen, entered St. John's for the first time- Sister Marie Louise's words of welcome, however, failed to calm our emotions. When we were assigned to our classrooms, each step we mounted heightened our anticipation, but we concealed our anxiety with a will heretofore unknown to us. What would our instructors be like? Would our lessons be difficult? Would we be swamped with homework? These questions were eventually answered, and, more at ease, we began lessons foreign to us taught by teachers whose diligence and energy struck us sharply after a long summer of idleness. We finally fell into line, and before we knew it the Seniors announced the Freshman Dance. Thoughts of the capers the upperclassmen would put us through sped like a nightmare into our minds, but we were spared these horrors and given a simple initiation. Basketball games and dances were our chief social activities, and we took part in them wholeheartedly. Months passed unnoticedgibefore we knew it mid-year examinations were only a week away. Gloom immediately replaced smiles 'and studying began in earnest- The exams, dreaded as they were, were not so difficult and most of us passed them almost effortlessly. J On the heels of exams Lent came. Misson activities and mortifications now held our attention. We ransomed pagan babies with true Mission spirit, and finally Easter arrived. We were extremely happy that we could once more enjoy the luxuries laid aside on Ash Wednesday. During the time following Easter the weather was warm and everyone looked forward to gym periods spent outdoors. The examinations in June had us worried for a short time, but we were remorseful when they ended-not that we relished any test, but because we' could no longer claim the title Freshies. We had to give up our places to our successors. We sincerely hope that they have as much fun as we did and become Sophomores as reluctantly. Through the tireless efforts of our Moderator, Sister Edith, the council endeavored to enliven school spirit during the basketball season by selling tags or displaying colorful posters. When the basketball season came to an end the council sponsored the Third Annual Varsity Dance, which through the support of the student body, was a great social and financial success. Our most sincere wishes for a successful term, go to the members of next year's council. gm' , 1 MH. I With the countries of Europe in the death grip of War, and the other countries, not actively participating in the war, torn between economic and political instability, the Foreign Missions are reliant upon the spiritual and financial generosity of the American people. We, the Mission Crusaders of Saint John Cathedral High School, have redoubled our efforts to keep the spirit of the missions alive and blazing. Although our task this year has been more trying than that of our pred- ecessors, it will be yet more trying for our successors. Next year the Foreign Missions Will be faced with almost insuperable barriers. You must keep their torch ablaze. You cannot-You must not--You will not let it die. hd lf. l':fk'i.:,2i 7 5, 1, 1:1 Q V' 41 Q 5 5' we A ' 15 7, 5,i,,.'LlA ,-,,,--.M f - ,H . ,- .- 'A , , 1 1 arf, 13 ',,y.,!L , it ,i .-A 0 1 , . f . , 4 , - , :V L X . , ' ' ,- If , I 4 , 'I if , .X , - ,, , I ' l ta L. Timely posters encouraging prayers for peace, the reception of the Blessed Sacrament for our boys in service, First Friday attendance and open devotion to the Queen of Peace during Advent did much to awaken the enthusiastic cooperation of the students. With gratitude in our hearts we thank the Catholic Action Committee and its moderator for leading us along the right path, the path to the Sacred Heart of our Savior and to his Blessed Mother. Of course our greatest contribution was made by every pupil who worked after school and bought bonds to check our greatest enemy- inflation. To this struggle We have relinquished our prom, and with it the realization of the anticipated joys of three years. , During the Fourth War Loan Drive, we made history by playing a basketball game with Central High and charging a War Bond for admission. Although our student body is only a small fraction of Central's, we had as many rooters as they, and even bought more war bonds. From this one game Uncle Sam netted 354,000 and throughout the entire year we bought 333,900 in War Bonds and Stamps. After losing the Peter Hin trophy to St. J oseph's last year, the Ramblers regained this prized possession again this year by defeating them 37-24. In state competition the Maroon and Gray, having been placed in Group III, were defeated in the first game by St. lVIary's, Rutherford. Yes girls, we all know that each of you was a veritable Achates. Chic uniforms, plus snappy cheers and scores of tricky formations made our cheerleaders the envy of many schools we engaged. We extend to you our congratulations and heart-felt thanks, to you who were there, win, lose or draw. . , 4, lv,-. , ' ' ,r. ,, J 1 4 V-KJ. 1. .i -Sm if 1 1 nw, QQ:'?ggWC Zl Xxx if 53 Z'jW,,FE?i?4C5jf-2 , X 'X 'Y ff-'f'W 353f E 'dm Qisijifmaff Qfwgljiiwjw Ngkif W S gf if Wipsiigiinxkgjgi Eifffif E fMf'Mg r . 22 Efzg :H ' x ,,,J , 32- I V 1 .
