Something in our complex human make-up demands the praise or recognition of our efforts by another. And how often dur- ing our years at St. John's has this need been filled by the various members of the faculty! The solicitude and encouragement of the sis- ters and priests has played a great part in our education, and has been a welcome supplement to the necessary direction and criticism which we have received. But how often-if ever-have wc found an opportunity to give zu. word of praise or a simple thank-you to the members of the faculty? Certainly they are as human as we are in the need for recognition-and far more worthy of it. Perhaps it is just the lack of an appropriate occasion for acknowledgement that has made our appreciation so inar- ticulate. So, it is with a deep sense of gratitude that we now address this word to the members of the faculty. We will not soon forget the sacri- tice, the patience, and the Christ-like humbling of self which has char- acterized the daily lives of those of you who have worked with us. ln ways of which we are even now ignorant, the wholesome effects of this association will remain with us. The incalculable benefits of a truly Catholic education is the result of your labors: we thank you for them. Pen and paper cannot satisfactorily express our thanks to you, but you will realize what we wish to say when you know that whenever our thouglits return to St. .lohn's, wc will think ol' you and pray fo:- you. May God bless you and reward you for your work. IQATHLEEN LANGEY '41 M TF W X, W3 RICHARD HOXN'ARlJ DUQUETTIQ, Presitlent I troulfl lzelp oflaeirs, out of fellow' feeling. J. A., about to go forth from the halls of our Alma Mater into a world where our own sense of responsi- bility is to be substituted for teachers and rules, we are filled with a sense of obligation to outline for the group who so hopelessly aspire to fill our shoes certain rules of conduct which if followed with care should have the effect of making life very much easier for teachers and others who unfortunately must bear for one more year their unwelcome' presence within these walls. Need you ask of whom l speak '? Let us look back to a September morning of 1938, the opening day of school. Well it is that we Seniors l'QlllQ1lll7Ql' that day. lnto these halls we came as Sophomores, with our position of superiority over all the other classes firmly established. But on that same day into these halls 031118 the Class of Forty-two, a group of wild-eyed, terror-stricken individuals, one after another, wearing a facial expression which bore the immaterial label lost',. Though your numbers seemed endless and though we scanned each face for the sight of even one who might under our careful guidance and direction for three years emerge a likely prospect to be trusted to carry on the traditions of scholarship, deportment, punctuality and ability estab- lished by the Class of Forty-one, our efforts were fruitless. There you were, future candidates for the present Junior class, poor, bewildered, unsophisticated, homesick children thrust upon us, devoid of even the slightest vestige of intelligence. Of course we who are about to leave you, realized the responsibility which Fate had so heartlessly wished upon us, and we rose to that responsibility. VVe consoled you with words of wisdom and encouraged you to bear up and carry on despite your shortcomings. We even took some of you out evenings in an en- deavor to improve you but, alas, the task was impossible. This year, as in all the years that we have been with you, in all matters of any importance which have been performed here, we have led and you have blindly followed. iWe need not recall the many out- standing demonstrations of your absolute and undisputed inability to carry on in this institution where we leave off. But the Class of Forty- one would fail in its duty if it failed to charge you to return to S.J.A. in September of this year, determined to live up to the ideals which we have set for you. The question of what is to become of you without us has, we believe, no answer. Anil it is with the deepest and most sincere regret that we leave you to rely upon your own scanty resources in the future. Our sympathies go out to the instruc-tors who must contend with you for one year more. But, however, we eling to the vain hope that il' you strive to imitate the outstancling example ot' punetuulity, stucliousness, goocl manners and mental aiehievements ot' the Class ot' Forty-one, your teaehers may iinfl it in their hearts to say oi' you when your Senior year is enflecl: Well done, girls and boys! lVl1ile you have not been at substitute for the Class ot' Forty-one, you have ilono your best to be an imitation ot' them. liionnno IJUQUICTTIC 'ell RESPONSE T0 THE SENIORS Valiant seniors, you are most magnanimous in allowing us this great privilege of addressing' you on tl1is memorable day. Although you have made a courageous attempt to reign supreme at our Alma Mater for the past year, have you done anything' more than attempt it? Ui' course, we couldn't expect. you to do as well as we shall do. But then, worry not: for we promise not to use you as a precedent. How could we follow your example! Shall we enumerate? ln our years at school, we have all l1ad enough sense to take no chances on hroken legs-other peoples' broken legs-hy leaving our desk drawers open continually. Neither have we ever heen disowned hy any of the teachers. How does it feel? l'p to the present, our class has shown marvelous cooperation in school activities. Did you envy our splendid team work and, in a mo- ment of weakness, decide to turn the Green and White over to us for production? Note how we demonstrated harmony and class spirit 'in our first issue. Just look at yourselves, posing there on the stage like a lot of animal crackers, reminding us of a trip to the zoo. And those brush- cuts!! What we have to say about them can he summed up in a quota- tion from a member of the faculty: So much ti111e spent on the out- side of the head indicates what little the inside holds. Without question, our future will he much more brilliant than yours, we have heen duhhed the 1'llusfrifm.w class of 1942. Not for a moment, would we dare mention the adjectives frequently linked with your name, dear class of '-ll. Yet with all your faults, we know you have been fortified in your years at Saint John 's to go forth as valiant defenders of right Over might. Wie wish you success as we follow you in memory for we are the happier for having known you. J1cnALn1N1+1 Gowirrr '41 d CLASS PROPHECY Novel Fete for Class of Q41 PLATTSBURG, N. Y. June 21, 1952 QAPJ - The elite of the cinema, art, sports, and social world was represented at a most unusual party which was held today at the home of Mrs. Courtney Vanderthau, of this city. The occasion of the informal gathering was the first complete reunion of the Class of 19-il of St. john's High School. As usual, Mrs. Vanderthau, the former Doreen Lyons, gave one of the novel parties for which she is famous. This time, her headline-making party was a Come-As-You-Are party, with the guests instructed to come wearing exact- ly the same clothes they were wearing at the time they received the invitation. Of particular interest to the movie- goers of the nation was the appearance of Barbara King, the well-known film actress, who has just completed another record-smashing hit. Miss King was ac- companied by her producer, the voluhle Francis Kevit, who is responsible for guiding the young star's talents into the held of four-star film successes. Miss jane Devlin, whose voice has thrilled devotees of the opera during the last season of the Metropolitan, was per- suaded to sing a selection for the gather- ing. She was accompanied at the piano by Miss Angela Nolan, a concert pianist in her own right, who is Miss Devlinis constant companion. lt was learned from reliable sources that Charles Kevit, the world-famous ar- tist, has neatly completed a new picture. The model for this picture is said to be Miss Gloria Genet, who posed for the portrait that received the Bradley Award last year. Both Mr. Kevit and Miss Genet, who attended the party, declined to divulge more information than this, although it is believed that the latest pic- ture will be superior to last year's prize- winner. Of interest to all lovers of popular music was the appearance of Raymond Casey, Thomas Collins, and Clarence jar- vis, members of the band which has been voted the hottest one of the season ac- cordin to a poll taken by Downbeat. The Eands girl vocalist, Kay Ryan, swung out with a song which showed why she is an important reason for the orchestra's popularity. Also in the field of modern music, the dancing team of Champagne and Murphy demonstrated one of the dances that they are currently teaturing in the hit show at one of New Yorks leading night spots. the sports world was represented by Ken Korthas, slugging member of this year's pennant favorites, and Vernon Jackstadt, instructor of Physical Educa- tion at bt. johns high School. Also present was the famous sister- and-brother team of restaurant operators, Helen and Robert lvIcGavisk. A book ot famous recipes which they have edited will be published in the very near fu- l.l1l'C. Miss Evelyn Morrison, the wealthy heiress, returned from an extended tour of south America in time to be present at the gathering. She was accompanied by her companion, Miss Madelyn Strack, R.N. Dr. Robert McMartin, who has estab- lished an excellent reputation for himself in dental surgery, accompanied his den- tal hygienist, Miss Claire Norris. 'l he Honorable Francis O'l-Iara, who is preparing for a campaign for reelec- tion to the Senate, took an afternoon off from his strenuous political activity to be present at the gathering. With him were his efficient secretaries, Frances Coulbron and Catherine Dyer. Russell Ransom, the rising young ar- chitect who designed the newest block of government buildings in Vifashington, llew up from his office in New York to attend the reunion. jeraldine Gowett was also among those present. An enthusiastic reception has been accorded to her latest book of poetry. Other guests included Mary Buck, chief librarian at the Congressional Library, and Mrs. Harry Favero, the former Hilda Bullis, who is at present pursuing a ca- reer of domestic bliss. Guests from New York were Miss Marguerite Thornton, the well-liked teacher of the Sth grade in P. S. 41, and Mr. John Trombly, principal of P. S. 41. Exclusive New York fashion shops may feel the widespread effects of Mrs. Vanderthau's party, as the Well-known fashion designers, Pearl Rabideau and Wanda O'l-lata, were on the look-out for inspiration for next season's style crea- tions. All pictures of celebrities at the gather- ing were taken by Richard Duquette, ace photographer for a well-known newspa- per syndicate. The story was covered by Kay Langey, of the same syndicate. The Aquila recalls the eagle which is pictured with St. John the Evangelist, who is the patron saint of our school. The eagle symbolizes both the heights to which St. John rose in the first chapter of his Gospel, anfl the inspiration of the Holy Ghost. It is but fitting that we should choose a name which is connected with the patron ot' St. .lohnls Academy. P EAC E Peace is like the snow that falls, lt hlankets our happy lives. lt makes us look up into space, At stars whieh till the skies Ancl woncler, Its He up there Giiarclingzg us tonight from harni And filling' our sad hearts with light? G0WVl41'l l', '41 Dear Future Editor, So now the Class of '42 is guiding the destinies of the Green and Whitewl Before the Seniors saw the first issue which the Juniors put out, we might have had SOIIIQ misgivings as to how you might find your new work, but we see that the paper is in good hands. Once each month-except for the month of January, 1941, when human nature showed its weakness-we feverishly wrote, edited, and produced an issue of' the Green and White. The time we put into those eight issues was packed with work, disappointments, and humor- ous situations. Late hours were the least of our worries, and the un- expected was always around the corner. Much credit is due the stu- dents, and tl1e faculty-credit which we would like to express but find hard to put into words. But the new staff will find as we found, that only difficulties over- come can bring the ,joy of Victory-even if it is a little hlurred due to lack of sleep. The work and the efforts which we have put into the Green and White may soon be forgotten, but the reason why we expended that effort-the good of St. ,lohn's-will live on as an incen- tive for countless other students. Good luck, and remember always to . . . unfurl the Green and VVhite!
