Baseball Team Captures District and CAC Titlesg Finishes 15-6 For the first time in the history of Vianney, the baseball team won the CAC title. ln addition, it won the District title, thus ending with a 15-6 record, the best of any Griffin nine. The '74 team was led by the pitching of Pat Mulligan Q8-41, and the hitting of all-Metro lnfielder Neil Fiala t.492J, Dan Murphy QA-082, and Dave Klipsch f.371l. After losing their first two games, the baseball outlook was rather gloomy. Then the Griffins started to come around and in their next game defeated last year's State Champs, Fox, 13-0. This was the spark the club needed. From there on the Griffins were devastating except for a disappointing second place in the Brentwood Tourney. Following this, the team won their next four games before losing to Kirkwood. District play nearing, the Kirkwood game loss was a blow to the team. However, the nine put it all together in their first game against Kennedy, l3-0. ln the semifinal game, the team posted a 10-5 win over Parkway North. ln the finals, the team played probably the best game of the season when they defeated three-time State Champion, Lafayette, 5-2. The next three games against CAC opposition, saw the Griffins defeat DuBoLu'g, St. Mary's and Kennedy. This brought the win streak to six, but more important it gave the team a 5-1 CAC lead. Kennedy's loss gave them a 6-2 standing. This left the team the opportunity of winning the CAC crown, with but two games left. The baseball nine then met Hazelwood in the regional, in what proved to be the game of the year. However, the Griffins lost 2-1 on a wild pitch in nine innings, and Hazelwood went on to win the State Crown. The final two games were victories over Chaminade and Mercy and the Griffins had their First CAC Baseball Championship.
