Varsity Basketball The H773-7-l version of Vianney basketball was not what it was ex- pected to bc, 17 wins, l-1 lossesl llowcver the varsity cagers did supply the fans with some very exciting bas- ketball. With seniors Mike Chambers, Rick lsaacs and juniors Neil Fiala, Dave Klipsch and others, the Griffins did come in second in the Vianney Tournament. The Griflins also had exciting victories over such teams as Aquinas and DuBourg, 2 of the 4 CAC champs. The Aquinas game which had to be the most exciting game of the season. was a game in which the Griffins applied a delay offense during the entire game and came out on top 39-34 with the high point man being Cliff Albers with I5 points. The high point game of the season came in the DeAndreis game when Mike Chambers pumped in 29 points. The most shocking loss of the season had to be the loss to Kennedy in which the Griffins found themselves Wehrle hits from the outside. k ' 44 5,55 - Q 23 points down at half time, but they battlcd back to within 5 points before finally being stopped. Even though the Griffs had a poor record they were in contention for the CAC title all the way up to the game against St. Mary's. The key to staying in contention had to be the big victories over Aquinas and Chaminade. In the Chaminade game Neil Fiala threw in 23 points and Dave Klipsh added 20 points in the 64-63 victory with Joe Wehrle scoring the winning bucket. On the special team awards, Mike Chambers was voted the MVP and captain of the team. Chambers also was picked to the 2nd team CAC squad. Joe Wehrle was voted the best defensive player while Cliff Albers had the best free throw percentage. In looking to next year, the future does look bright with four juniors, Kurt Wehrsten, Neil Fiala, Dave Klipsch and Cliff Albers, who all saw lots of action during the year, leading the way. x it IZA. fl if lit li Chambers connects for two. The '72 team showed that cross-country is becoming a popular sport at Vianney as they had their biggest and best team in the sport's four year history. The Griffins ran a tough schedule of meets, but the climax of the year was the CAC championship taken at Chaminade. Mark Streeter led Vianney's harriers in all meets throughout the season, but mostly the harriers success came from ruiming as a team. Other outstanding members of this varsity squad were Dennis Hinkamp, Jim Loyet, Dave Kelly, Tony Ebert, Mark Diehl, and lone senior Mike Freese. Coach John came up with a fine team through hard work and long practice. With many returning lettermen and a strong B-team, he can hope for even better performances in the coming year.
