The individuals, students and faculty, who work for the good of Vianney are what make this school great. We would like to recognize two such persons who have dedicated themselves to Vianney-Mrs. Virginia Schuchard and Mr. Charles Eisele. Each in his or her own right has made a celebration. They have exposed themselves to 750 young men each day in the hope that they will gain from what they have done. To praise them would not be enough, for to praise is only to express one's thoughts. But to thank is to express oneis feelings. So, on behalf of the staff of the TALON, along with the students, we wish to dedicate this '73 yearbook and all the work that went into it, to them. We hope that by doing this we may truly say thank you and contin- ually celebrate with them. ITISBITTIR TOLHUACMIII TUMWQK TIINDCES x . Q X NX x x X ' X KN Ni 9 N-xsmwmx X . October 28 On the very next night, the very spirited Griffins gathered for one of their traditional pep rallies. After this loud, but purposeful rally a roaring bonfire was lit. The flames were a mild warning to the Chaminade Flyers of the power of the Griffins. lt was on the next day however, that the real flames erupted. Led by Coach Don Heeb the Vianney Griffins met the undefeated Chaminade. This record was not to last. After a long, hard battle the Griffins won 6-O. All happenings of Homecoming '72 were definite proof that the Griffins of Vianney High School are No. l. These very special days were three to he remembered. 'Vp l ' , K.. October 29 1 Masses Unite Students Since Vianney is a Catholic school, it is customary that the student body come together once gt month to celebrate the lfucharist. This year's Masses were truly something to remember. School Masses were held in the gym to eomtnemoratc some special feast ol' the Society ol' Mary, or at holy day ol' obligation or the week of Christian Unity. ln addition to the sehool's chaplains: l-'r, Piekarski, Fr, Mayer and Fr. Tobin. priests from the various parishes around Viamiey were asked to say the mass for the student body. Musie at the Masses was usually provided by the students, with the help ol' Bro. Lootens and Mr. Noble, Preparations for the Mass and the choice ol' themes and readings were handled by the students. All of this made it possible for the students to become participants in the Mass and not just observ- ers. The Masses were just one more way in which the Unity ot' Vianney was expressed and without which the school would be missing something vitally important. pr ll ll t I 5' Dances l l Dances as always were a big hit at Vianney, providing a lot of good music l i to the great'number that attended. The l three major dances of the year were the Back-to-School, the Thanksgiving, and H Winter dances. This is the purpose ol' Vianney's Girl Representa- tive System. As in past years, area girls schools were invited to send two or three girls to the Girl Rep. gym night, where Vianney guys could get to know each girl. A few days later, one girl from each school represented at the gym night was chosen to he that high school's Girl Rep to Vianncy. Meeting once a week, and under the co-ordination of Tom Seitz, the Girl Reps were given the opportunity to tell Vianney what was going on at their respective schools and exchange ideas for liuture projects with Vianney. At the same time, Tom would inform the girls of Vianney's events and would ask them to spread the word in their schools. The Girl Reps play an important role in all of Vianney's happenings and without their help Vianney's social functions would certainly not be as successful as they have been in the past. The H772-73 Winter Carni- val, held on lfcbruary l7, was definitely one of the best ever, bringing in a profit of nearly 580000. This rather large profit naturally corresponds to many hours of work and planning by both students and faculty members, especially Bro. James Droste, this ycar's carnival faculty moder- ator. This ycar's Winter Carnival saw the return of many ofthe popular and always successful games such as the spear drop, coke poker, and roulette, but there were also many new and profitable games. These included the football toss, putting green, and hockey shoot fsponsored by the hockey team in ease you wondcredl. As has been the custom in past years, the homeroom which brought in the greatest profit in each division received a cash prize. Homeroom projects ranged from a movie to the ever popular balloon shave to a dance in the cafeteria. From the great profit that was made and the many students who enjoyed themselves on this evening, it is easy to see that the 1972-73 Winter Carnival was a smashing success. ,, 'ii 7' sift? Vianneyis starting unit again did not finish the game as the score mounted 48-0. The third contest was the first home game of the season with DeAndreis bowing to the Black and Gold for three in a row 40-0. Disaster struck in the form of overcon- fidence and turnovers in the fourth game, as the Falcons upset Vianney, 15-10. The Griffins sought revenge the next two weeks, pounding Rosary at home, 42-13 before outscoring cross-town rival Kirk- wood, 31-22. The following game wasjust a warm-up as DuBourg went down with a 43-0 defeat. The stage was set for the biggest game in Vianney's history. Over 4,000 enthusiastic fans crowded Griffin Stadium in great antici- pation. Both squads were equally balanced and impressive in all positions. In the fourth quarter the Griffins finally put together the only successful drive of that overcast Sunday afternoon. Mike Chambers bulled over from one yard out for the game's only points. Mike was named the game's MVP, the Vianney team was honored by KXOK as the Prep Team of the Week. The tremendous spirit and enthusiasm generated at the Homecoming Game was not to be found the following week at Roosevelt Field. The Dragons of St. Mary's accounted for Vianneyis second loss, which cost the Griffins a CAC Co-championship and a potential state play-off berth. The Vianney Golden Griffins finished the season with a fine record of 8 wins and 2 losses, white- washing Mercy 21-0 in their final home game. Under the coaching of Bro. R. Schrader and Mr. D. Ripplinger the baby Griffs posted an impressive 6-0 record while allowing only 24 points and racking up two shutouts. Defense wasn't all the Eagles displayed. Their offensive team got into the heart of the spotlight by crossing the goal line at an average of 28 points a game and a total of 168 tallies of the year. The little gold machine stormed into the season with very impressive victories over Mercy 36-6 and Kennedy 30-6. The rest of the season these young men simply shot down victim after victim. Coach John humbly accepts C.A.C. Championship. Y- Pvt ul' pxuf Turner amazes crowd with blinding speed. To the victor belong the spoils . The '72 team showed that cross-country is becoming a popular sport at Vianney as they had their biggest and best team in the sport's four year history. The Griffins ran a tough schedule of meets, but the climax of the year was the CAC championship taken at Chaminade. Mark Streeter led Vianney's harriers in all meets throughout the season, but mostly the harriers success came from ruiming as a team. Other outstanding members of this varsity squad were Dennis Hinkamp, Jim Loyet, Dave Kelly, Tony Ebert, Mark Diehl, and lone senior Mike Freese. Coach John came up with a fine team through hard work and long practice. With many returning lettermen and a strong B-team, he can hope for even better performances in the coming year. Fleisehmann strides toward finish in winning form. 9 ,X Zimmermann, exhausted after a long haul. 51 x 9, l Varsity Basketball The H773-7-l version of Vianney basketball was not what it was ex- pected to bc, 17 wins, l-1 lossesl llowcver the varsity cagers did supply the fans with some very exciting bas- ketball. With seniors Mike Chambers, Rick lsaacs and juniors Neil Fiala, Dave Klipsch and others, the Griffins did come in second in the Vianney Tournament. The Griflins also had exciting victories over such teams as Aquinas and DuBourg, 2 of the 4 CAC champs. The Aquinas game which had to be the most exciting game of the season. was a game in which the Griffins applied a delay offense during the entire game and came out on top 39-34 with the high point man being Cliff Albers with I5 points. The high point game of the season came in the DeAndreis game when Mike Chambers pumped in 29 points. The most shocking loss of the season had to be the loss to Kennedy in which the Griffins found themselves Wehrle hits from the outside. k ' 44 5,55 - Q 23 points down at half time, but they battlcd back to within 5 points before finally being stopped. Even though the Griffs had a poor record they were in contention for the CAC title all the way up to the game against St. Mary's. The key to staying in contention had to be the big victories over Aquinas and Chaminade. In the Chaminade game Neil Fiala threw in 23 points and Dave Klipsh added 20 points in the 64-63 victory with Joe Wehrle scoring the winning bucket. On the special team awards, Mike Chambers was voted the MVP and captain of the team. Chambers also was picked to the 2nd team CAC squad. Joe Wehrle was voted the best defensive player while Cliff Albers had the best free throw percentage. In looking to next year, the future does look bright with four juniors, Kurt Wehrsten, Neil Fiala, Dave Klipsch and Cliff Albers, who all saw lots of action during the year, leading the way. x it IZA. fl if lit li Chambers connects for two. With strong pitching from K. McGrath, R. Ott and P. Mulligan, and good hitting. the Griffins ended with a l-7 record, placing 2nd in the CAC. The Griffins started slowly, losing 2 out of 3, then went on to win 4 straight, taking the Brentwood tourney. This was the lst baseball trophy ever won by Vianney. ln the tourney, the Griffins defeated Maplewood 6-3 and Brentwood 9-O. The latter game played in a drizzle. In CAC competition, the Griffins were in lst place until the final game, losing a heart-breaker to St. Mary's I-0, the CAC co-champ with Aquinas. Augustinian transfer, K. McGrath won 5 with an ERA of 0.76. J. Wehrle led the hitters with a .369. J. Tabash was the Griffins captain. Seven players were named on CAC all-confer- ence teams. 'itu- . ,Q .1 .
