THE 1963 CALAROGAN 1 i ir Iff - His Eminence JAMES FRANCIS CARDINAL AAclNTYRE Most Reverend Timothy Manning, D.D., J. CD. Rt. Rev. Msgr. James E. Dolan Rev. Peter Curran O.P. TO THE MOTHERS and FATHERS at SAEVT JOHN ' S TABLE OF CONTENTS FACULTY SENIORS 12 16 UNDERCLASSMEN 34 ACTIVITIES SPORTS 49 73 THE PRINCIPAL ' S MESSAGE To the Class of 63 Catholic Philosophy of education attempts to regard a man as he actually is, an individual personality and a social being at the same time. With this in mind St. John Vionney High seeks specifically to produce the highest type of Catholic men — men distinguished in piety and in learning according to their God-given capacities. It seeks to train youth to love God, to honor and to respect their parents, to serve the Church and their country, and to assist their neighbors in charity and in justice. Each individual marl must be considered in the relationships of the soul-body complex, mind and will, character and knowledge, individual and corporate society in terms of the future and of all eternity. St. John Vianney considers as one of its duties help- ing each student to determine the way of life and the profession or trade in which he might best serve God. Mindful of the needs of the Church, it frequently recalls to its students the importance of following a vocation to the priesthood and helps them to recognize a call from God to the priestly state. It sees in the task of training youth in the correct thinking and right living procedures more important element than the training to produce technical skills obtainable later in life from a wide variety of sources other than the secondary schools. St. John Vianney High attempts to give a unity of purpose to a man ' s life, to avoid a meaningless and aimless existence. A well-balanced sense of values, the ability to think clearly and to create constructively, the strong conviction of what God expects here and here- after — these are the things we embrace. When these ideals have been seen and understood, when they hove at least been begun steadfastly, to be undertaken and labored at by a student, to be held in esteem and to be carried out for a lifetime, then we feel that we shall have succeeded in our aim.
