In the light of his accomplishment through persistent application under the impulse of God's grace, our minor trials of every day life should vanish into space. He is an admirable patron, and his life exemplifies the virtue of perseverance in an ideal. As you know, your annual is named after the birthplace of St. Dominic, Calaruega, Spain. When Dominic was a student like yourselves, we read that he was eager to learn all that could be known of God, His world, and of the great human family dwelling therein. One incident during his student years, however, shows us the outstanding characteris- tic of the young man who was to become a world-renowned leader of men. Observing the great poverty and suffering of the people during a period of famine, Dominic sold the manuscripts that were so precious to him for his studies, and which he had even annotated with his own hand, and gave the proceeds to the poor. Charity, a love for each individual human person, was the dominant note of his personality. This love he had learned from his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. May this same love take root and flourish in the life of each one of you. Yours devotedly in Christ, Wil Am AQ Joseph Fulton, o.P. We, the students of Sl. john Vianney High School, humbly dedicate our 1958 CALAROGAN to the Dominican Provincial of the Province o the Holy Name. For it is the first class to complete four years of study at our young school. We feel that the difficult years of establishing a new school are now past and that with this class we will look forward to an ever increasing success in the academic field. May you reflect honor upon our school in the future by your progress in higher education. My blessings and a prayer for God's favor upon you in the happy years to come. Sincerely in Christ, Rt. Rev. Msgr. james E. Dolan, President 'k. we igrinciiaa On behalf of the faculty of St. john Vianney High School we offer our sincerest congratulations to the Class of '58. It has been a distinct pleasure working with you and we hope that the cardinal and grey will long linger in your thoughts. In its Latin root meaning, education means to lead or bring out. No doubt you feel you could have done better in the last four years of your high school training. That your best has never been realized. This dissatisfaction with one's self is good. It goads us to greater efforts, to strive for perfection, morally and intellectually. Even St. Thomas Aquinas was never satisfied with his work or his life. We feel, however, that the fundamentals of a happy and healthy Christian life are firmly in your grasp. The faculty and your fellow students of the other classes will be watching your progress in the future. May our Holy Father, St. Dominic, who conceived his mission as a torch lighting the lives of others with the fire of Christ-like activity, inspire you in your efforts to realize the fullness of your potential for goodness, not only in your own life, but in influencing the lives of others. May Our Blessed Lord and His Holy Mother guide and protect you. God bless you, William Moore, O.P. Principal 'W f ..- ,.V, ..A.,?g ,W 7..,,i-Y W- . .,.-, ...W ..
