Gone forever will be the routine of school life, the rush of frenzied activities, and the excitement of games and dances. Between these covers, the Echo staff presents a panorama of the i954-1955 school year. As autumn gives way to winter, and winter yields to spring, sportsandactivities change, too, adapting them- selves to the seasons and the holidays. The staff hopes that you will enioy this seasonal record of the school year, ancl that its echoes will long remain with you. We do not feel that way about our Dyer toot- be proud of a team that has lost most of its games. When many ofa team are playing varsity ball for the first time, it is self-evident that they will not be champs. But four of this year's varsity will be back next year, so students and coaches are looking forward to a fine season in '56. Jim Jacobs, Coach To Coach Jim Jacobs we owe this year's basketball successes. It was he who worked unfalteringly with the boys, most ofwhom were playing varsity ball for the first time: he cheered them onwhen morale was low: he suffered most when they went down in dire defeat, took no credit, when much wasdue him. In the won-lost column, our record showed 5 won and 13 lost. Many of those in the lost column were lost by very close margins, proving that a B team ball game can be very exciting. Many of the B team boys have gained the necessaryexperience to become varsity players, and will be seen play- ing first string ball next year. As soon as the baskets come down in the gym, the balls and the bats come out, and every day the three school diamonds are filled with eager young players develop- ing throwing arms or batting skill. During the pastsix years Coach Jacobs and his crews have given the fans many enjoyable games filled with baseball thrills. One way or another, Dyer usually comes outon top, and Jacob's record shows three con- ference championships and three second place ratings. At present, Jim Dinges, '51, is playing with the Milwaukee Braves and Rich James, '53, is on the Indiana University squad. As the yearbook goes to press, prospects for a win- ning season look good.
