But when it does see, the ones around us seem empty i and so we seek solitude in the quiet of our thoughts. 0 .125 '- But out of this solitude comes a need for understanding, the understanding essential for communication. .. the expanding link of happiness t 5 Which leads to a more personalized response. . . 4 f I a clear perspective. Goals start to come into focus and a life style is formed out of the years of waiting. In the life-long process of education the high school teacher is most influ- ential. In elementary school, discipline to ensure order and self-control is the prime objective. The High School, however, strives to guide the student to his place in a large communityg to mature his relationships with other people and to forge his independence. The faculty of B.N.H.S. has played a dual role in our lives-and played it successfully. We must be academic- ally prepared and spiritually prepared to understand ourselves as well as other men. . Bishop Neumann is not the same place it was four years ago. The entire rostering system has been completely turned over. The Counselling System has been reiuvenated. A new chemistry and biology lab have been installed. The hair and dress code has been modified. Change has oc- curredg the school has kept pace with the times. It is more than just coincidence that Father Polini has been principal during these four years of change. He was instrumental in running the ADMINISTRATION Saturday night dance when he was a teacher at Southeast. He is a man who is not afraid of change. This year he is seeing his initial class complete their four years. The Class of i71 has been a witness to what a dynamic personality can accomplish. When a school does not change, it falters. Father Polini, dedicated to the students of Bishop Neumann, will not let the school falter. Assisting the principal in the general control and opera- tion of the entire school program is the function of Rev. John J. Cox, 0. Praem., Vice-Principal. The scholastic welfare of Neumann students is effici- ently handled by Mr. Frank J. Baldassarre, Academic Vice-Principal. Coordinating all school activities and evaluat- ing all educational departments are just a few of the roles of the Administration of Bishop Neu- mann. Five men have undertaken the challenge of not only running an efficient scholastic program, but also of developing and enhancing the fine qual- ities of 3,000 young men. The Class of '71 has graduated under a prin- cipal who began his office simultaneously when they were freshmen. A vice-principal who guided Controlling budgets of all departments and activities is the work of Rev. Robert F. Kelly, 0. Praem., Treasurer. some wayward members of this class, a curricu- lum especially outlined for this group by their academic vice-principal. The famed Dean of Dis- cipline who handed out detention slips to the associates of this class, trying to make them realize that cutting wasn't always the best thing. And ultimately, the man to whom all senior fees were paid-the treasurer. Truly, this Administration fulfilled their offices by being the backbone of the Class of 1971. Newly appointed Dean of Discipline, Mr. Albert J. Di- Giacomo, is responsible for the implementation of school policies. ATTENDANCE Rev. David Lawlor, O. Praem. and Brother Blase Corso, O. Here at Neumann great strides have been made in countermanding this student apathy by providing a vigorous extra- curricular program that proves be- longing to a club is not iust paying dues and attending monthly meetings. Belonging carries a responsibility of sharing-sharing ideas, opinions, and feelings which mold a sense of under- standing and friendship. The Student Council means work, under- standing and leadership. Who is it for? It is for you! You, the student of Bishop Neumann High School. The Student Council functions especially for the students. They have organized many pro- grams and social activities in order to make Bishop Neumann a meaningful place in your life. It gives you the opportunity to be a leader in your class-Representative. It gives you a chance to develop your talents athletically-Intramural sports. It also gives you a chance to improve a faltering subject if assistance is needed-Student Tutoring. Basil DiSipio, President John DeVirgiIiis, Vice-President Flev. Ronald Rossi, Moderator Mark Tustin, Secretary Although the Council is working successfully, it could not be done without the leadership of its officers and its moderator, Rev. Ronald Rossi, 0. Praem. They have established a lasting unity in the school because they know you, the student, needs a place to develop both mentally and phys- ically and somewhere to seek aid in becoming a person. Basil DiSipio makes arrangements for the Turkey Trot while Father Rossi and John DeVirgiIiis check the list of groups auditioning for the Rock Concerts. Edward Brinkman, Treasurer mf' tttt 4 John DeVirgiIiis briefs the Senior Representatives on the responsibil- ities they will undertake ior the com- ing year. The Junior Representatives help to mold their class in preparation for an organized senior year. A keen understanding of individual student needs enables the Sophomore Representatives to successfully communicate with their class. The house lights are dimmed, the orchestra is tuning up: suddenly the proscenium bursts into blazing light and another production begins a suc- cessful run on the Neumann stage. This year however, it was different. This year it was the fifteenth annual production. Back in 1957, the Neumann players made their debut with a three-act comedy called Western Union Pleasel, under the direction of Mr. Frank A. Perri. During the years since then, Neumann's Theatre Department has compiled a repertoire which includes twelve Broadway smash hits. Notable shows have included Harvey in '59, The Teahouse of the August Moon in '60, Guys and Dolls in '63 and '69, The King and l in '65, and South Pacific in '67, This year, it was Carnivall, a show filled with the glamour and drama of circus life. Again under the direction of Mr. Frank A. Perri, the cast moved on stage with the grace and poise of polished performers, a trademark of Neumann productions. After fifteen successful years, it is safe to say that the Theatre Department will continue in fine form for many years to come. Mr. Perri's concentration on every scene enables the show lo become a work of perfection. 5 4 Although Mrs. Perri is humble about her duties with the Theatre Dept., she has been very instrumental in the suc- cess of each show. Bartolomeo plans for an upcoming game. What keeps a man at one job for 25 years? It could be that the man is a very dedicated one. The iob of head Football Coach is not an easy one. Neither is the iob of head Baseball Coach. Likewise, the iob of Athletic Director is no nominal position. Directing gym classes takes time also. Performing all these at once is truly remarkable. This year by doing four jobs Mr. Paul J. Bartolomeo has proven himself remarkable. For the past twenty-five years he has been doing all these jobs save that of Athletic Director. The re- sults span from frequent championship contentions in both football and baseball, three championships in baseball and two championships in football and the ultimate success: the city championship in 1954. This year Mr. Bartolomeo assumed the job of Ath- letic Director and did his usual outstanding job. In honor of all his fine achievements, the 1971 Crystal is dedicated to Mr. Bart. How can one put a football season into words? How can one describe everything that goes into a football team? The planning, the summer camp, the practices, the triumphs, the defeats, the glories, the embarassments, the pride, and the hurt? How can one convey the entire idea of a championship endeavor? Start with the coach. Paul Bartolomeo, in his 25th year at Neumann, is as able a coach as any in the Catholic League. Watch him diagram plays, run practices, call plays, study films. This is what being a coach is all about: hard work, sacrifice, and dedication. The staff must be equally dedicated. Robert Chiumento, Robert DiCamiIlo, and Robert Senske were as true as coaches could be. Through long hours of labor they molded a team. And then there is the team: Bill Hatty led the most potentially explosive offense in the league, firing touchdown passes to the likes of AlI-Cath- olic Bob Smith along with backs Tom Amoriello, Frank Svedas and John ltri. The offensive line, anchored by Dave Gervasi provided the forward thrust. Defensive standouts Hank Clinton, Joe Lenz, Dom Lanciano and Gerry Leone provided the inspiration for a tenacious defense. Somehow they fell short of the championship they were capable of. But that really doesn't mat- ter. What does matter are the long hours of time, practice, corrections, sacrifice and the dedica- tion which made the football team of 1970 a team, and not a collection of athletes. NEUMANN VS. SOUTHERN The stage was set for an interesting game. The Pirates of Bishop Neumann were coming off a losing season, about to play their last game. The Southern Rams were in high spirits expecting an upset. The neighborhood oddsmakers were very busy. But the Pirates had something the arm-chair quarterbacks forgot: pride. Along with a team spirit of togetherness and determination, their pride drove them on. After spotting the Rams six points the Pirates roared back. Four Bob Smith touchdowns and 35 points later, the Pirates had an overwhelming victory in their hands. The decisive triumph left no doubt as to the ability and talent of Neumann's team. This year, the Neumann-Southern game was the focal point of the season. Jim Cattalo was one of the busiest players all day kicking 5 successful extra points. Big Dom Lanciano wraps up a startled Ram ball carrier for a five yard loss. Bob Smith hauls in one ol his tour touchdown receptions behind the beaten Southern defense. v is ma W N W ,D VM J The Pirates stingy defense stifled Southern's backs throughout the afternoon. The reason for this could possibly be that everyone enioys athletic competition, or that most people have a little hotdog in them, or maybe that some students have a sense of loyalty for their homeroom down deep somewhere. Whatever it is, the people that participate in intramurals spend hours of their free time after school, sweating and falling, laughing and crying, only for the small satisfaction that the contest brings. Why do so many students play intramurals? . . . because it is the chance to really become part of your homeroom and part of your school. It is where everyone is on an equal plateau striving for a common goal, but winning is only half of the experience. lt's the knowledge that you're a part of something, a working part of something, not just a number in a roll book. The 1970-71 season can be considered suc- cessful even though our Keglers didn't win the Southern Division. Under the direction of Rev. George J. Feider, Mr. James Attanasio, and Mr. Thomas McAveney, the team managed to achieve second place. Prospects are excellent for next year, owing to the return of six varsity players. The Junior Varsity team consisting of all Sopho- mores were able to hold their own in some very tough matches. Because of their youth they will have the experience necessary to be a champion- ship contender. FRONT ROW: M. Velykis, P. Santilli, J. Alessandrini, J. Junod. This is what makes basketball such an interest- ing sport. And this year, although the Neumann Pirates did not win many games, the thrills' of Basketball were still there. Some teams would have been discouraged but the spirit of the Pirates could not be broken. Coach Albert Di- Giacomo feels that with such a spirit, next year's team will be the one to beat. The success of next year's team depends com- pletely on the value of the Junior Varsity and Freshmen teams. Mr. James Harron coached the Junior Varsity through many tough and hard fought games some of which ended in defeat, but still gave Neumann a feeling of pride in a bunch of guys that never quit. The ever dependable Fresh- men team under the leadership of Mr. James Stinger gave their usual fine showing and ended a tremendous year with a 15-1 record. Neumann is headed for a sure championship in the near future due to this intake of talent. Gene Brown advances to the basket for a well earned lield goal. The changes that take place are phenomenalg the growth, immeasurable. Senior year marks the beginning of new change, the change of a child into a young man, a young man equipped with experience, sensitivity, the ability to grow, and a little education. You won't find the answer by looking at their pictures, or reading the forty or so words written about them. Their school records may help a little, but other students get good marks. Academic achieve- ment alone does not make a senior outstanding. Being active after school, or getting a nice write-up in the school paper is not the answer. To find the answer, you must know these six. You must see them in the classroom, on the football field, on the debate floor, on the track, in elective office. You must watch them work, give up their own time to help the school in general, or one person in particular. You have to see them in the halls saying hello to everyone. You have to observe their dedication, drive, and selflessness. You have to experience them to know the answer. The students who know them will agree with the faculty that these six men are Outstanding Seniors. f W ,..... Henry Clinton To try to put Hank Clinton into words is to try to draw a rainbow in black and white. No amount of words can accu- rately describe Hank. The Scholar-Athlete of the school, Hank is a standout per- former in football and basketball, despite his small size. He is a member of the National Honor Society, which speaks for his academic ability. Never too busy to talk with a friend, Hank is really a very big man. l rr President of the Senior Class, Ray is also a well-rounded scholar. With his keen mind and quick wit, he is quickly able to turn a tough problem into an easy drill. A member of the Forensic Union, Ray has proven him- self time and again on the debate floor. Ray has proven himself just as well as Class President, devoting himself to giving the Class of '71 a memorable senior year. We are not helpless Raymond DeSabato we are men. Richard Nealis Basil Di Sipio A good Student Council president is a hard working man. He must be a sort of social planner, league commissioner, problem solver, and part time headmaster rolled into one. Basil DiSipio is an excel- lent president. Not only can he handle the many duties required of him, he can han- dle them the right way. Basil is often a hard man to find, since he is doing so many things in a single day. Besides his Council work, Basil maintains a high scholastic average. A member of the For- ensic Union, and manager of the football team, Basil has proven his devotion to the students of Neumann. Rick's is a familiar face to everyone who has ever been around school after 2:15. Working in the office, cleaning up, loading Coke machines, readying the gym for a dance, Rick does all these things. A good student in the classroom, Rick has also earned the respect of the Catholic' League for his stellar performance on the tennis courts. President of the Forensic Union, cham- pion varsity debator, Chemistry Club pres- ident Junior year, Sports Editor of the Rocket, member of the Tennis team, and accomplished scholar, Carmen's accom- plishments go on and on. His talents seem limitless, even to his storehouse of iokes. It is difficult to believe that there aren't really two of him. He can often be found in the Biology lab when he has any free time. But if you know him, you know he never says a word about any of it unless you ask him. if Richard Fruncillo Quiet people never get noticed. Rich is a quiet person. He gets noticed, though, when someone looks at the top students in the school for the past four years and the name Fruncillo continually arises. He gets noticed when someone thinks of the Track or Cross Country team, and naturally, they think of him. He doesn't get noticed when he gives up his time to help another student, but he keeps doing it. He gets noticed because he works, in the classroom, on the track, and alter school. One which leads not only to college or a vocation but to something higher, a personal accom- plishment. lt is not evident until one is faced with the realization that he is about to enter the world. Looking upon the altar he realizes that there is a spiritual awak- ening which lay dormant for so many years. The end result being a person who travels along a path of an awareness of life and a spiritual direction. d Cofmrmcefbmcecemlefilit The need for change is essential to all life. Even the lowly caterpillar will eventually attain the skies but in doing so it has to shed an old, much loved form. Commencement should be such a time for us. A turning point in which we shed our childhood fears and emerge as mature adults ready to attain the skies. April 12, 1919-August 28, 1970 Books, walls, chalk, stairwells-concrete symbols of what school brings to mind. Beyond these and giving them a spiritual and human dimension is the interaction of the teacher and the student. The immeasurable influence the teacher wields in the lives of his students is one truth that even the technological world respects. Considering this, one can image the hun- dreds of young meng be they working men, fathers, priests or even teachers themselves who felt the warmth and guidance of Fr. Fenning. We young men speak of heart as an opposite to cowardice in our colloquial speech, but Father Fenning rose above this meaning and redefined heart as hon- est interest in his classes, devotion to our Alumni and a loyalty to Southeast Catholic-Bishop Neumann as well as to the whole South Philadelphia com- munity that he grew up in and loved and served. Stephen L. Bucolo November 26, 1952-August 12, 1970 What can be said about a man who was willing to giveg a man who was responsible and energeticg a man who cared about life and the world. Such a man was Stephen Bucolo. Steve was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who desired it. He gave assistance because he cared about his fellow man and himself. He acquired much knowledge throughout his short life because he was alert and responsible, he did care about the world. To Steve, life was meaningful and full of values. These traits motivated his daily life. Now, Stephen no longer lives. But he exists in the minds of all those who were associated with him.
