Kanty has been host to the Felician nuns since 1950, the present graduating class Freshman year. In the course of that time the Felician nuns have displayed many laudable traits: kindness, understanding and above all-self-sacrifice. These charateristics were especially shown in the printing shop, the refectory and chapel. We, the class of '54, wish to express our heart- felt gratitude due to Sister M. Nicodema, Superior, Sis- ter M. Aquiline, Sister M. Leopoldina and Sister M. Bo- nagrace for all they have so assiduously performed. May God bless them! 3365 Q ' f.V , -V ' K, . V. Z., Y V7, .1 , .. As if by common agreement, all but one school, St. Michael's of Greenville, have dropped us from their football schedule. It is with a bitter taste in their mouth then, that the school authorities at Kanty decided to discontinue Varsity football for a time. How long? Who can tell? Kanty alumni of old will recall somewhat similar incidents in their day, when they travel- led far and wide to seek games. It seems that bigotry and pride were formidable foes throughout the years. During the past four years, Mr. Yezerski and Father Kuczynski had built veritable juggernaut teams, The records show 21 wins-21osses. Since 1949, we have been, qand still arep, the Diocesan Class B Football Champions for four successive years, His Excellency, the Auxiliary-Bi- shop of Erie, Bishop McManaman at our recent graduation exercises had occasion to speak of Kanty's football teams. He referred to them as Kanty meat-grinders -who inspired fear and created trembling in the hearts of their opponents by their team-spirit and fierce determination to win at all times. Many a Kanty graduate. has prepared himself for 1ife's battles on the school gridiron. It may sound trite to say that, our coaches, being human, were as eager to win as the next coach, that, at all times, they were interested in the individual boy's character, that they constantly preached fair play, team spirit-and the will to win, even when things looked dark. Our hats go off to Mr. Yezerski and Father Kuczynski for a job well-done. As soon as future opponents can be scheduled, maybe they, once again, will combine their efforts to build formidable Kanty meat-grindersf' Although the following did not have the opportunity to show their ability on the gridiron this year, their high-spirited play in the previous seasons will always bring back pleasant memories. So, to Paul Kowalkowski, quarterback, Chris Kulpinski, tackle, Hank Oskierko, we extend our appreciation for having contributed so much to the Kanty meat-grindersf' r .. fy- ev 1: ml X ll l i l anfy fl , ,..' -' - Mdgfyvwu F95 ,, ,- 5, If fn, A - 0' rm L ri, H. At first, they looked as if they might go on to another cham- pionship-building up a creditable 4-2 record by Christmas vacation. But the long holiday lay-off made them stale, after which, they dropped four out of their next five games. After this came the period when they should have started to go, but coach Sam Yezerski's charges couldnft muster up enough steam. They finished with an average of .500 at the end of the season and ended on a highnote by winning their last two games. A1 Malczon, a senior, set a new scoring record with 340 points for an average of 17 points per game. Hil Brudnicki followed with 205. These were the main men, but they cou1dn't have done it without the other seniors, namely, Chet Antczak, a guard, Paul Kowalkowski, a guard, Jack Witkowski, substitute guard and Ron Recko, substitute forward. Kanty Prep can be proud of its vocal and tumbling group composed of five boys, namely: James Paryz, captain, Joseph Pinto, co-captain, John Brodzinski, Jerome Okrzynski, and Francis Brodzinski. The boys had a rough start this year because only two of last year's veterans returned. But constant practice brought wonderful results. These acrobatic wizards have done a magnificent job and were certainly instrumental in leading the basketball team to nine victories this year. In autumn, two four-team leagues of intra-mural football were organized-in which the two teams representing the Senior class took both league honors. The season was climaxed by the new look All Star Game. Two teams, comprised of the most outstanding players of the sea- son, were chosen and one was designated as the North, the other as the South. The North, in a roughly fought battle, defeated the gallant Southerners, 9-0. The intra-mural basketball scene was enhanced by a new system. The antiquated class-team-system was discarded in favor of one where a senior and two representatives of each of the lower classes made up a team. These teams were then organized into three four-team leagues, which saw many exciting, well-played games. The season also produced a Cinderella Team -the Knickerbockers of the National League. The Knicks, pegged for no higher than third in their league, astounded the skeptics by taking their league's crown, when they beat the Federal League's representative the Leprechauns, and the American League's Globeskippers to win the coveted intra-mural basketball championship. Incidentally, the Knicks were the only undefeated team of the season. With the closing of the school year drawing near and the discon- tinuation of inter-scholastic tennis, we see the forming of two softball leagues. The Seniors again rule the roost in softball-to clean sweep the intra-murals. Thus we bring to a close a thoroughly enjoyable intra-mural sea- son. portal Intra-mural Class A Football champions before the game. Though we do not mean to compare it with the top military bands of the na- tion, but we do say that it produces sweet music when playing the favorite marches of Americana. This part of the eXtra-cur- 1'icu1u1n activities has always appealed to the students at Kanity. Many students have discovered hidden talents in themselves through Profes- sor Chojnackrs efforts, who firmly believes that musi- cians are made, not born. The talents of this band have been displayed on numerous occasions during the year, especially during the school functions, socials and the Memorial Day parade in Erie, Several of the band mem- bers will graduate this year, but we feel sure that their places will be filled by others during the next semester, and soon, they too will learn to produce sweet music. To Henry Oskierko, stu- dent band-director. we want to extend our deep apprecia- tion in helping Professor Chojnacki in his difficult task. ,. . . Established by Joseph Lukasik in 1952, it has grown in popularity under its present leader, Stanley Poturalski. Stan has tried with some measure of success to copy the style of the famous bandleader, Glen Miller. Through his own efforts, Stan has obtained a few orchestrations, and at the final social, the work and talent of the orchestra was displayed with their version of 1'Moonlight Sere- nade , Glen Miller style. As we leave the portals of Kanty we would like to remember the following seniors who helped to make this band the success it is today: Henry Oskierko and his mellow-toned trumpet, Paul Kowalkowski, with his golden cornet, Casimir Domurat on his slide-trombone, Chester Ant- czak and his ever-beating drums and last but not least, Lenny Figas and his alto-sax. ' To Stan Poturalski, the Class of '54 would like to extend its thanks for the hours of entertainment given by his fine orchestra and wish him much success in the coming years. Sieminski as assistant-editor and Rev. Sigismund Gosk, C. M., as moderator. The Kantianus underwent many new changes in the past school year. The paper was enlarged and many new monthly articles appeared. Among these new articles were: Voice of the Students, which expressed the opinion of the student body on interna- tional problemsg On the Campus, an article which presented the hu- morous side of Kanty lifeg and Spotlight on Sportsv a look at the light side of sports. Q The editor had the cooperation from a good staff which kept up the tradition of publishing a good newspaper. The staff was much larger than last year's and turned out a greater variety of articles for this year's issues. The 1954 Kantianus turned its attention to international pro- blems and helped to arouse the interest of the students so as to take an active part in current affairs. Its coverage of sports was larger and much more informative. The editor, assistant-editor, moderator, and the com- plete staff deserve sincere praise for such fine work. Let us hope that the future Kantianus will continue to follow the fine example of journa- lism shown by the present staff. .1 fi 715,11 Q Ii... :T P ' 0 ,, , l 'Z 5? 5 . 0' t . Some students come in search of information needed for the fulfillment of their class assignments. Others who have ventured in no special reason, come out with one of Dicken's classics, or a volume by Verne or Doyle under their arm. But no matter what one's purpose, a visit to the library is pleasant and fruitful. Left to right: Robert Kujawa, Hilary Brudnicki, joseph Czarnccki, Robe-rt Ty lwurski, Ronald Hecko, Stanley Bieleu. For pleasure or money, for developing a talent or just for recrea- tional purposes, the Hobby-Lobby is an ideal place. The Lobby is a well- organized club offering many different activities and interests. The three most popular hobbies are model airplane building, stamp collecting and photography, though other hobbies receive a fair measure of attention likewise. Perhaps the most popular pastime is photography. The Lobby's spacious, splendidly-equipped dark-room offers much to the photography enthusiasts. Frequently, a member who produces fine quality prints gets a chance to publish them in the Kantianus. Through the years, the Kan- tianus and the Kantian photographers have been advanced Hobby-Lob- by members. Hott, .fatty ,A ,.,.. ,M I I 1 1 l 4 ,L '-ii ar, 176 Wg, 'LZ ity The Sodality of the Blessed Virgin is the oldest organization at Kanty. Founded when the school first opened its doors to the students, it has outlived all the other societies and fraternities which have been organized at Kanty. Reverend Casimir Szymanski, C. M., the Director of the Sodality, is in charge of this spiritual fraternity. A Prefect who is appointed from the body of the participating members acts as a Mediator between the Reverend Director and the members themselves. The Sodality has no need of a treasurer because no dues are collected. In this stead a Spiritual Secretary records the spiritual activity of the body in a general spiritual bouquet. Under Father Szymanski's guidance, the members are encouraged to attend the Family Rosary which is conducted after supper on a vo- luntary basis. Once a year in May a Living Rosary of members is enacted near the grotto of the Blessed Mother in Kanty's rock garden which is budding with life at that time. The Marian Year of 1954 has shown great spiritual progress for the Sodality and the spiritual bouquets have been larger than those of preceding years. Let us hope that the succeeding years will show a greater increase in spiritual devotion among the Sodalists. Re-x, Casimir SZYIIIRIIISIU, C. KI., Dirm-tor, -1 lusvplx Zurmvski. If you are a graduate of the Class of 1954 or a current student, this annual will recreate, in future years, the memories you hold most dear. It will seem a stepping stone from your teen ages to manhood. If you are an alumnus of Kanty, these pages will also bring to your mind those fond memories when Kanty was synonymous with home. If, however, you are one who has never seen Kanty, we are sure this 1954 Kantian will instill the Kanty spirit in you and will enable you to see Kanty as we see it. In conclusion we wish to state that this letter does not complete the 1954 Kantian. The pages following contain those generous donors who have made this yearbook possible. Thank you, farewell and may God bless you. Respectfully yours, Leonard T. Figas, Editor Chester Antczak, Business Manager his book could not have been made possible had it not been for the hind generositg of the following . . . a. - ff-.....-. ,. 7... , ...--, J, . ..,. .q............, .
