A If e C 0 I 24, I ' m published by 41' f THE STUDENTS OF ST, JOHN'S HIGH SCHOOL '502I Adkins Avenue St. Louis, Missouri Voiume' XVIII Number 4 0If'8lfU0l lt is with firm and unhesitating step that the Class of '49 enters upon its career of living in a sadly dis- ordered and unhappy world. Whcrt lies ahead? For some, perhaps great achieve- ments, for others, perhaps failure from the world's view- point. But, Whether success or failure, there will be opportunity to do great things for God and His Church, either by living a good life or by dying a holy death. By dying? Can we doubt it when we call to mind the recent persecutions of God-fearing men? We turn to the martyrs of yesteryeanfthe Law- rences, Cecelias, Stephens and Agneses,-to the modern martyrs of today,- -Bishop Stepinac and Cardinal Minds- zenty, for courage to lead a good Catholic life which will help to bring rest and peace to a troubled world. May this modest book help us to recall not only the friends, the achievements, the activities, the triumphs and failures which were so important to us in the four years of our high school education, but, above all, may it re- mind us that We have been prepared by a sound Catho- lic education to be leaders in the individual careers We shall pursue in life. fmecbcafion To you, Our Lady of Fatima, we the Senior Class ot 1949, dedicate this yearbook. During this era of world discontent, as we stand on the threshold ot a new lite, dear Lady ot Fatima, be our Guiding Light and lead us through the perils and dangers that beset us that We may reach our tinal goal, Lite Everlasting. ,gm jacufg Rev. Our helpful and congenial teachers are hoping that some day their former pupils will come back, perhaps as famous scientists, physicists, chemists ore fwhat have you? IQQQCA Have you ever suffered from stage fright? Who hasn't at one time or other in his life? This feeling of panic, nervousness when speaking before an audience and other peculiarities and defects in pronunciation and enunciation receive efficient corrective treatment in the speech classes which seniors at St. lohn's are privileged to attend. -264 Oggfdfg Our library, as it is now in its new quarters and with its many improve' ments, is a rnost pleasant place in which to read or study. A number of students were privileged to help in marking books, prepare ing posters and other displays for the library. During Catholic Book Month a special exhibit was put up. Books by Catholic authors, book jackets and appropriate posters inviting students to read Catholic books were most attractively arranged under the direction of the Librarian. Holding a prominent place were the crafts, textile painting, metal work, weaving and the making of favors, dolls and other toys. The beautiful aluminum trays, coasters, and ash trays were a source of great satisfaction to the youthful designers. The students participated in the Annual Christmas Carol Poster Contest, the Easter Seal Design Contest, and the Annual St. Louis Clean-Up and Paint- Up Poster Contest. lim Komorek Cin circlel received honorable mention in the first, and together with another contestant, had his poster selected as a first prize winner. lim's poster will be used in the Pall Clean-Up Campaign.
