emot efau Mstoty AMBROSE VAN DYKE 38 CLASS OFFICERS Preslaen Robert Srebers Secretary Ambrose Van Dyke V1 ePres1dent Peter Van Lankvelt Treasurer Clarence Van Handel Wrth th September sun sneddmg 1ts brrllrant rays on our scholastrc rnstrtutron f1fty seven freshmen no1s1ly tramped through the portals of St lohn Hrgh rn the unforgettable year of l934 The new routrne ln classes and studres made the 1n1t1al year farrly soar rn rts fllght leavrng many cherlshed memorles of emoyable experrences although as green freshres we were treated wrth rmagrnary scorn and derrsron As sophomores a new sort of prrde was embedded ln the heart of each rndrvrdual for the Alma Mater took on a dtfferent aspect namely that of loyalty and wrsdom The re treat made for the f1rst trme by these hardy s cond year students opened unfamrhar doors of opportunrty Vocatrons and the beneflts of a holy hfe were toplcs of contempla tron ln the hebdomadal celebratron of the Centennral 1nc1dents wh1ch afforded moments of complete happrness occurred that by the trme l99U rolls around they ll be known as Valleylore or as actual tradltrons Tragedy stalked 1nto the bulldlng rn 1936 as the number of classmates had dw1ndled to only forty f1ve Berng Junrors we played an 1mportant part 1n athletrcs and dramatrcs Homecom1ng fGSl1V1l1GS were of the gayest and frnest rn the schools hrstory The estab lrshmert of a school paper The Vo1ce placed a few Jumors on the staff The publ1cat1on rn augurated a new 1nterest 1n school affarrs and events We were commrssroned to chant hymns for the graduates on Commencement Day wh1ch brought home wrth a strngrng ef fect the fact that the last year was uncomfortably drawrng near but the expectatron of 1t produced a tl'1r1ll Aga1n September appeared on the horrzon l937' The End' Eagerly yet sadly forty four lads and lassres enrolled as seruors Plgskrn season proved most colorful Our boys played therr hearts out 1n order to earn prestlge for St Iohn The Vo1ce underwent an rmmense elaboratron and countless haDPY hours were spent edrtrng 1t Srlence IS golden IS an old proverb and persomfylng ft the students reaped rxches durrng the retreat Attentrve to lectures and devout rn prayers the boys and grrls for three days gave themselves ent1rely to God Dont move' Look rrght at me These were some of the comments uttered by the photographer to posrng semors Whew' what a relref that rs Ill bet l look lrke some thrng the cat dragged rn However the artrsan was krnd and when the proofs were re cerved everyone was Just too too d1v1ne Handsome young men w1th sh1n1ng badges and belts gomg on duty wrth the mten tron of preservlng order and drscrplrne gamed many a glance from trrm young ladres Meet Uncle Sally frrst dramatlc productlon of the term was a huge success Basketball swung 1nto full strrde wrth three semor youths playmg essentlal roles 1n 1ts glory As a result of numerous and d1ff1cult battles the cagers ranked second rn the Catholrc Conference Fate rnterrupted our happy semester f1n1s when Lrllran Vandehey matrrculated to a school rn Iron Mountam Mrchrgan For the frrst txme rn many years two se'uor lads partrcrpated rn the Golden Gloves 'lournament Green Bay Bob Srebers competed rn the frnals and emerged wrth an ln Jured nose Hog Koehn reached the semrfrnals A blood chrlhng drama The Scarlet Ghost mented loud applause from an astounded audrence Never shall we forget the fascrnatrng work sp nt on concoctrng yearbook matertall An amateur program sponsored rn the attempt to rarse suffrcrent funds for th prrnt 1ng of the annual greatly arded rn publlshrng thfs edrtron Everybodys Crazy the class play zndeed had the capacrty crowd rn tears one moment and rn grggles the next All appeared astrr busy and excrted on that clear Iune morn Commencement Day Wrth rnrsty eyes and a blrnk to retarn the strength of the flood gates the graduates of 38 tread therr way to the stage to recerve that certlfrcate of accomplrshment from the hands of the Very Reverend lohn I Sprang rs L14 1 1 f - - - c - ' - - Q .
