Over and over these things come up in our minds, and we find ourselves asking, How can we ever find the time to get everything done? We realize that school must come first, and it doesn't matter so much what we learn there, as to lg we leari Remembering this will help us in the growth and development of mind, soul and personality. For as the minutes tick away into hours, we too await the strength that evolves from a stable Catholic atmosphere. Truly Saint J ohn' s prepares us to encounter the world with our eyes wide open. 2 3 S 5 S T 3 E 1 3 E R HERITAG -ULD and EW St. John's High School was formed in 1888, with her first small classes mold- ing a substantial foundation for an in- stitution that has since offered such splendid material both to God and to man. Since that time, many changes have occurred not only to the outside structure but also to the expanding educational structure. The superb attributes, how- ever, have remained unchanged in the life of school, being deep-rooted in all that is good and holy. The recent addition to a student curriculum is the fulfillment of the courses in which they pursue in the future. The shared time plan at Park- side, Jackson High and Jackson Junior College has been carried through and is quite a singular event. Everyone is happy at the success this system has proven. Minutes Drag By For ages man has studied volume upon volume of literature in an effort to satisfy his quest for knowledge. In our agitated school life, learning may not al- ways seem to be as exciting as we would like. At times classes may tend to become monotonous and we are tempted to wish that there be some other way in which man can become cultured. But we are all aware that only through the perserverance of the daily rituals such as attention, understanding and homework are we able to achieve the goals that can be ours. ,:V4lY fx X r out B... Nm Around the Clock Guidance Reverend Joseph Labiak I Reverend Adolph Oser Advice or discipline, encouragement or mortification, our administration is there sta- tioned on duty for us whenever we beckon. It is as if each teaching and guiding member of St. John's is an officer in God's legion on earth, constantly directing others, as is the code of their chosen mission. And it is for this reason that we look to them, trying to follow the ex- ample that they lay before our very eyes each and every day while we are in school. As their charges, we can only hope and pray that what we have learned from their inspiring expecta- tions of us, will not be forgotten when we are out on our own. For surely, even though we seldom voice our thanks, all students are deeply grateful to them and the constant con- cern they give us. May God bless you always. 'qlbvf Ap 3 X g .dv ve .,,, l iz.. Q Q? fe Yi? we J 'Y 4 U DERCLASSME .N 'Tin The underclassmen are given the responsibility of the traditions which will be carried on for many, many years to come. Games, par- ties, studies, and dances are all important events ofthe school year which add to the fast-moving life of a St. John student. The minutes fly and the years go by, but we'll always remember our high school years. The Gaels, while rolling up 277 yards on offense, limited Okemos to only 117 yards. The game unveiled a very versatile backfield, led by Tom Goodwin with three TD's, and John Powers, Fran Querbach and Howard Murphy all sharing in the scoring. Goodwin closes in for the kill. The Gaels game with Kalamazoo Hackett produced early game scoring. A two yard plunge by Bob Johnson, a 28 yard pass from Tom Goodwin to Jim Bretes, and a 65 yard interception by Ed Jablonski showed this. The Irish retaliated in the second half and scored three quick touchdowns, two via the air route and the other on a five yard run. The Gaels met their challange and scored a touchdown on a 35 yard pass play. 67 A11-state center Greg Santanski contrives a Wpiggy- back tackle against Albion. In our second game we were up against Tecumseh, who at the time was No. 1 in the state. The Gaels showed them that this meant nothing when we met on the gridiron. Seven minutes having gone by in the second period, Goodwin punched over from the 2 yd. line to put the Gaels ahead. The rock hard defense held the Chiefs to only 60 yds. total offense, while the Gaels rolled up 140 yds., including an insurance TD on an 11 yd. pass from Good- win to Timmons. End Jim Bretes clenches a pass from Johnson for a touchdown against Kalamazoo. 3 i I I Ed Jablonski intercepts a Hackett pass and scampers for a TD in a L.ineman's Dream. The Gaels unbeaten streak of eighteen games was snapped by the Wildcats of Albion in the fifth game of the year. The first half was strictly a defensive battle with the score 0 to O at the half. But in the second half, Albion broke the game wide open. With 7 :01.remaining in the third period Albion raced wide and scampered 58 yards with the first T.D. of the half on a 30 yard pass interception and their final marker on a 25 yard pass to Karl Wilson. Dick Dalton puts the toe to one of many extra points Behind fine blocking, Howard Murphy cuts up field for a first down. 6 8 Bob Johnson picks up short yardage behind a wall of Gael blockers. The Gaels, showing a solid ground and an aggressive defense paved the way for a 14 to 7 win over Monroe Catholic Central. The game produced some very exciting plays with Saint J ohn's outrushing the Eagles 131 to 65 yards but Parkside came out on top with the passing 57 to 23 yards. End Mike Timmons bulls his way for a first down after a short pass. In the final and most important game of the year the Gaels scored a re- sounding 33 to 7 win over the Celts of Saint Marys. The Gaels hard charging line led by Greg Satanski and Jim Bretes held the Celts to eight yards rush- ing and 89 yards passing and one touchdown while the offense opened up and scored five times. Howard Murphy scored from the three yard line, Tom Good- win tossed a 17 yard scoring pass to Jim Bretes, Goodwin then ran ten yards to score and that ended the first half. For instance, Steve would take his crack at copy writing and layouts, while Julie co-ordinated photography with typing and art There have been times when we would have liked to dump the whole mess into the basket, but our reward is the many people we have made just a little bit happier and the fact that we recorded an entire year in pictures and print I spite of our late hours, cold dinners and numerous demands on time, we re proud of our work and only hope you share a little of our resolved enthusiasm for Yearbook Staff Is Grateful The Yearbook Staff would like to say a big thank-you to all those persons who had a hand in helping us complete this 1965 edition.
