Our first bow to high school society was made when we staged our first pep-meeting,f6r'the St. John? 'Sri Tlhomas football game. Our spiritual knowledge was increased when Father Wroth-conducted our ifirstifretreat the last few days offlvlay., During our Freshman year, the inauguration ofthe annual May Crowning tookplace, g gAb,r 4 ' 1 ' V Af We soon found ourselves stepping out of the small shoes of green fresliies andintofthe biggerfboosts of sophisticated Sophomores. Under the perpetual guidance of Sister Ann Thomas and Sister lrma Catherine, we proudly assumed the responsibility offserving the Senior breakfast to the graduating class of 1951. Our sophomore year progressed smoothly. until the annual high school picnic at Pleasant Lake on June 5th. Unaware of the happenings which take' place cachjyear at the pipnic, we were astonished by the dunking of the underclassmenl A A V 't.--. Q ' , V On September 5, 1951, we again entered the portals of Saint John High to' begin jour 1unfaf,yaar,unaaf the guidance of Sister Jean Baptiste. Late in September, we encountered our first activity which was that OfChOOSll1g-'.OL!'l'-QVEl'yCh?,l'lSllCd classgrings. Our social life began to shine as we sponsored many successful dances, the proceeds of which were used to entcrtainfthe graduates at the Junior - Senior Prom. A school-wide turkey raffle also aided-us insecuring the sufficient fundnceded for the Prom. On October 27, the entire class took part in the Jubilee Pageantcommemorating the golden anniversary of our present school build- ing. Acknowledgment was given to the priests whohave guided St. John's to the highest'point,of, respect and honorg Fasher Schenkelberg, Father Wall, Father Duffy, and our present Pastor, Father Coyle. The lastiand most memorable event of our Junior year was the Prom held at the Cascades Clubhouse on April 15th. 4 - ' H ' 3 The happiest and most well remembered of all our school years is the Senior Year. That day finally came, Septemgber 6, 1952, when we entered the halls of Saint John High for the last-time as high-school students. On the nights of October 7, 8, 9, the bulbs flashed rapidly at Dunhanna Photo Studio. Sleek hair, shiny noses, stiff collars, and ,snowy-white blouses made the entire Senior Class look saintly. After a brief delay we gave a sigh of relief that all the pictures had turnedout. . .and no one had broken the camera! , i - J 1 . It was truly a great victory that pealed forth from the now historic Victory Bell atop of old St. John's on November lI6, 1952. We had beaten out cross-town rival St. Mary's 26 to 19, and the whole high school rejoiced when-we received the prize Duffy Jug at the annual Victory Dance where Margaret Mary Woods was crowned Miss Gael. 1 On December 5, the entire student body took' part in the impressive ceremonies which consecrated the Senior Classfto Mary, our Heavenly Mother. . .',s fi - V , L . . . On February 15, we began two fervent weeks of prayer with a mission which was ably conducted by two Redemptorifst Priests, Father Ernest Miller and his brother, Father Louis Miller. , H ' , ' A E ' , ' 2 On April 14, the Cascades Clubhouse was again the scene of the Junior-Senior Prom. We rejoice at the fact that we have completed twelve years of schooling' but we are reluc- tant to depart from our clear Alma Mater. Upon leaving, we wish to thank the Faculty, and the priests, and especially Sister Hiltrude for her continual kindness and understanding, and Father ,Coyle for giving' us his guidance necessary to preparelus for the world we are about to face. COYLE PASTOR Since becoming our Pastor on January 8th, 1946, Father Coyle has directed many spiritual and social functions which have been a benefit to both students and parishoners. Through his guidance, the last two summers have been memorable ones because of the July Parish Festival. To Father Coyle from the departing Class of 53, we leave our most heart- felt thanks and gratitude to the generous and virtuous example he has given us as a friend and advisor. Reverend Father Clarence Wood - Assistant Pastor Born at Flint, Michigan, Father Wood obtained his education at St. Mary School. His priestly studies were begun at Sacred Heart Seminary, Detroit, and finished at Mount St. Mary in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was ordained May 30th, 1947. Father Wood arrived in Jackson in No- vember of 1948. Sophomores and Seniors have been instructed by him in religion. These classes provide much satisfaction and knowledge. His greatest joy from be- ing the Director of Athletics was received from the return of the famous Duffy Jug. On a golden summer day, when Father has finished his priestly duties and all other necessary tasks, he is most likely to be found on a golf course. 1 . eReverend Father Francis Murray - Assistant Pastor Father Murray began his seminary days at St. Joseph's, Grand Rapids. Then he was transferred to Sacred Heart at Detroit, and later moved to Mount St. Mary, Cincinnati, and finally finished at St. .Tohn's, Plymouth, Michigan. His day of ordination was June Znd, 1951. Residing in Kalamazoo, Father Murray, as a boy, attended St. Augustine School, our great rival. His first assignment was at St, John's, and we have had possession of him since August, 1951. Since then, the Fresh- men and Junior classes have benefited by his instruction in the religion class. The Altar Boys learn how to serve Mass under his diligent teaching. He is also in charge of the Boy Scouts, Troop 45. His friendly manner and love of joking is enjoyed by all his friends at St. John's. 6 ii 2 1:42513 rr: -3 5253! : '-v.,,. . if ..- 'Yu 'K 1' .-Z5 ra- V1 5 .5 .4-. But never in our minds will falter The joyous thoughts of the past. Through these long years we've studied hardy We have worked, and played, and prayed. We have offered everything to God, Trusting that near Him we've stayed. As we go on through each new year We'll utter, each, a prayer For those who linger at St. John High, For those still toiling there. We pay tribute to the Sisters dear, Who, while we worked and played, Kept their constant vigil o'er Their children as they prayed. CLASS FLOWER: Red Rose Mighty like a rose, they say Concerning life's fair flower. Our hope is also in God's strength, As on us grace is showered. CLASS COLORS: Blue and White The brilliant colors of our class Portray our feelings light. Yet true devotion to our work Is held in Blue and White. CLASS MOTTO: Under Mary's Mantle Through all our years of study We've found devotion trueg Always, as'God's children Under Mary's Mantle Blue. ST. .TOHN'S And who could have fought those dreary years Without the aid of one blessed. Truly, God's grace has been given anew To His priests - His workers best. The Victory Bell on dear St. John's Rings out again anew To wish us many happy years In our future life so new! We're thankful that this happy year Has dawned to us at last. But yet a tear or two may drop To recall the years that have passed. And so we say, Farewell, St. John's, Bless us from above, And keep us ever in your heart Forever, with God's love. Joyce Calbert ALMA MATER Hail St. John's Blue and Gold, Dear Alma Mater To thee we pledge anew our fealty. Thine is the victory, All our hearts hast Thou conquered, We shall be true to Thee Eternally. Hail Alma Mater, our school belovedg Our spotless lives shall be Your greatest fame. A quick survey of my growling enterprise, Pitt's Pottery Plant convinced me that my absence for the day would not slow down production. So, I hopped into my favorite flying saucer, Soup Bowl, and undertook the ten-minute flight from Mars to Earth, , ' I i As the Empire State Building came into view, I decided that it would be as good a place as any to land. Alighting from my saucer, I headed for the first elevator and was astounded to see Walter Hines at the controls. A sudden tap on my shoulder diverted my attention to a studious looking gentleman on my right. On closer inspection I recognized Dan Whitney, who informed me that he was Professor of Psychology at Cambridge University where he and his wife, the former Mary Goff resided. Entering the lobby, I was nearly deafened by the insistent voice of Joyce Calbert who was demonstrating the Steady Stream Water Pistol, manufactured by Bess Vancalbergh, Inc. Once outside, I hopped into the first taxi parked at the curb and who should be sitting at the wheel but Jim Kaplinskil Just then, a familiar voice issued from the radio. lt was none other than Ron McCluskey introducing the guest speaker of the day, Pat Wellman, who had just returned from a big-game hunting expedition in Africa. As I glanced out of the window, a huge billboard in front of Carnegie Hall announcing the main attraction of the night, Phil Spitalny All Girl Orchestra starring Pat Dangler and her magic violin, attracted my attention. Co-starring was that internationally known famous pianist, Mary Ann Fitzgerald, playing Chopsticks.l Since boxing is One' of my favorite sports, I ordered the cab to stop at Madison Square Garden where Bob Bettendorf was defending his Mosquito Weight crown against slugger Steve Wowianko, an up-and-comi.ng title contender. On my way in I purchased a pack of Lammer's Foot-long Fags, manufactured by Beverly Lammers who in her private yacht, follows the U. S. S. BRUSH and supplies Captain Atkins 85 his crew with their daily cigarettes. To my dismay I discovered that the bout was postponed due to the fact that Bob's wife, the former Lea Ingles, had just presented him with his seventh sonl . I felt rather dizzy from the excitement of the morning and decided to visit the nearest doctor. A few buildings down the street, a sign indicated the offices of Michael Keller M.O. on the thirdlfloor.,-His efficient nurse, Yvonne Wasielewski, informed me that the doctor would be with me in a few minutes. Whittling away my time, I 'turned to thesports section of the morning paper where a decisive ,victory Olympic Walkathon for the Americans by Beverly Walkowicz was presented in big type. On the comic page, Teresa Cummings famous portrayal of Little Fanny Gooney, pleasantly held my ,attention until the doctor was ready. I u - -, . . . , 3 Finding myself physically fit, I proceeded to a nightclub on the outskirts of town.II had just comfortably seated myself when the spot-light fell upon Bubbles Anuszkicwicz singing her version, ofq I've Got Tears in My Ears frornlying on My Back in My Bed While I Cry Over You. Her next number was a duet with that internationally famous crooner, . Jirn,Crowley. Mary Lou Deraedt who had just joined me at my table hinted that the dreamyulooks that they were giving ,each otlter weren't just an act. Mary Lou was busily engaged at the time in gathering informationifor her latest book, 'Night Life in the,U.S.A. just then, a suave looking Bob Smith, employed as head waiter, approached the table. After a few minutes of pleasant . reminiscing I learned that he was happily married to Mag Woods, who was, drawing customerstby the droves with hpr famous dinners. The largest share of her time, however, 'was occupied by her three youngsters. - , f . J Y A K Having made the rounds of New York, I climbed backfinto my saucer andkheaded for dear old Jackson. It seems that John, a confirmed H P bachelor at the ripe old age of 38, had been successful infevading hisimany ardent admirers. An on-stage presentation - of 'her current play, Take An F, was attracting a huge crowd. By this time, my stomach had a emptyifeeling, I had John drop me off at Bob's Lunch which was under new management. Bob' Peter's wasthe new manager and he employed Ida Walicki and Joan Muck as waitresses. While he took in the money the'girls, charmed the customers. ' ' , N A if After paying five-dollars for my horsemeat, I left Bob's andwas just turning the corner whensleanne Duffy thrust a pam- phlet into my hands praising the merits of her husband, Dave Arend, who was running for the President of the Tapa Kega Day ticket. He promised better Baby Blatz in the future. -f A A ' , About this time I felt a urge to visit my old haunts, the Cascades..
