To each of St. john's faculty, VVe give thanks for ev'ry memory, Our gratitude we do express, For your kind words and thoughtfulness. Beneath thy banner, gold and blue, We promised always to be true, Always loyal, faithful, brave, Remembering how much you gave. The memories are stored within our hearts, As each and every one departs, The football cry will arise in our mind: VVe're out to isdn, and our One Path to find. The school activities, our social life, These we enjoyed along with our strife, Yes-the time has come for us to depart, But the love of St. john still reigns in our heart. X 4 Anne Thomas 3 fd 7f,x X HAIL ALMA MATER Hail St. johnls Blue and Gold, Dear Alma Mater. To thee we pledge anew our fealty, Thine is the victory. Our hearts hast thou conquered, We shall be true to thee eternally. When in the future years, Memory recalls The strong, lasting friendships made Within your walls, Then shall we sing your praise, Your honor far and wide, May peace and love within your Walls abide. Hail Alma Mater, our school beloved, Our spotless lives shall be Your greatest fame. Ever our guiding star, be thou our inspiration Honor and loyalty be ever to Thy name. aaa Zfdozfaeq ln the drama of life, twelve years can often appear to be an eternity, but to us, the Class of '51, it seems like only yesterday, that we were cast in the role of students. The lights dimmed, a hush came over the audience, the curtain rose, and as Act One began, we found our- selves at the door of Room 101. Upon entering, we were greeted by Sister Rhoda, who at once began her task of teaching each of us the three R's. On May 19, 1940, we experienced the spiritual joy of our First Holy Communion. This is one day, we will never forget. The scene changed and we were no longer babiesg at last we had reached the second grade, and to the cast was added the name of john Van Buren. Sister Hilar- ian was on hand to guide us through this year, as well as the third, in which we welcomed Tom Smith to our class. To her we owe gratitude for her perse- verance in teaching us long division, the knowledge of which was to prove very essential in the years to come. In the fourth grade we welcomed Anne Thomas, Bruce Burmingham, and Beverly Svoboda to our little group. lt was on May 31, 1943, that we were made Soldiers of Jesus Christ, by His Excellency, Bishop Albers through the Sacrament of Confirmation. VVe continued our education as fifth graders under the direction of Sister Theophila. joining us here were Harold Pennington and Eugene L'l-lullier. No doubt everyone can still remember the excitement during that first exchange of classes. It was the next year that we first gained fame, along with the title of 'Sixth Grade City Basketball Champs. Sister Charles Edward's pride and joy was our trophy which held the place of honor on her desk. Toward the end of the year, Wanda Harding, entered our class. Act Two began, when we rose to the heights of junior High School. Shortly after classes began this fall, we were greatly saddened by the death of our beloved pastor, Father john Duffy. He was capably replaced, however, by our present pastor, Father joseph Coyle. Our tasks as seventh graders were made bearable through the kindness of Sister Irma. VVith Joyce Stetler, Mary Rugg, joan Smith, and Mary Hawkins joining us as eighth graders, we com- pleted our grammar school and our efforts were re- warded with promotion to the coveted rank of Freshmen. When the curtain rose for Act Three our cast was greatly increased by such celebrities as Phyllis Bil- aski, Bernard Bronakowski, Karen Brown, Betty Chomic, Ted Goff, Judy Knutson, Rita Konkel, Ed job, Madeline Maes, Dorothy Obuchowski, Bob Pa- piersky, and Christine Skrocki. Because of our number, the class was now divided into two groups with Sister Vita Marie taking the girls in hand, and Sister Marie Patricia received the duty of supervising the boys. Our faith was strengthened by our first retreat given by Father john Day on May 3rd, 4th, and 5th, No longer 'lgreenn Freshmen, we reached the heights of sophisticated Sophomores. This year two new teachers met us-Sister Encharia and Sister Fabiana. XVith them came the new names of Clara Smith, Maureen O'Connor, and Betty Schweda to our roll- call, A three day retreat once again aided us in bet- tering our lives. A very eventful year came to a close with the Sophomores acting as host and hostesses to the Seniors at their graduation breakfast. Rising to the importance of Juniors, Sister Fabiana again cheerfully led us through the year. Our social life began to shine as we sponsored our first dances and held a successful turkey raffle in order to obtain the necessary funds for our junior-Senior Prom. Father Wfarth conducted a wonderful retreat the last few days in May, and the school year came to a close when the juniors and Seniors were entertained by the Mothers' Club on a Class Picnic at Pleasant Lake. VVith the duties and responsibilities that come with the title of Seniors, in September, 1950, we began our last year at St. john's. Sister Hiltrude was pre- sent to make it a most memorable one. On December 7, the Senior Class was consecrated to our Blessed Mother in a most inspiring ceremony in which the entire High School took part. Shortly after Christmas vacation, the girls were in- vited to a Pre-College-Council at Marygrove. This proved to be very entertaining as well as profitable to everyone who attended. Once again our basketball stars shown brightly. The Senior Class was able to boast of five lettermen, who led the Gaels through a very successful season. Our thoughts once more turned to God during our annual retreat. Since it might be the last one many of us would make, it was in every way our best. Our appreciation goes to the juniors for the wonder- ful Prom they so graciously held in our honor. This never-to-be-forgotten event was or. Easter Monday, March 26th. And so as graduation draws near and the curtain slowly begins to descend on our school-life, we bid adieu to our Alma Mater, to the Sisters and Priests who have helped us to mold our lives so as to be more Christ-like and Mary-like and thereby through our example to spread Christ's kingdom on earth and above all in our own hearts. 20 if 666606604 is W..-ef ,::,-::,. 1' Q ig ..E,, 7 if CLASS OFFICERS M. Today we shall visit the future of St. john's Class of 1951. First on our route comes a restaurant called Hazeres Hash House. It is a small place specializing in good food. George Hazeres is chief cook and bottle washer while his wife, the former VVanda Harding, charms the customers. Across the street we see Rita Konkel in her ultra-modern shop, cutting and styling hair. Some of Rita's creations have hit Vogue. Going back a couple of streets we enter a side street on which is situated a dingy, dimly-lit tavern. As we enter the hole its proprietor. Dave Schonhard, greets us with his Polident smile. Up on a stage we see Ace Cummings tickling the ivories while Anne Thomas shouts the blues- Frankie Laine style. Anne only sings in her spare time. Her chief occupa- tion is selling Hunter's Pop. Once again on our journey, we switch on the carpet radio and the voice of Bruce Birmingham announces the temperature, humidity, and other current information. Next we hear Karen Brown and her Terrible Tale Time. Her interesting little broadcast can be heard over Station B U L L, managed by the very successful jim Bullinger and his pretty little wife, the former Delores Barker, who gave up a career of woman wrestling to bring sunshine into jimmy's life. Our next stop brings us to a very swank department store called Maury's. Its owners, Lorraine O'Meara and Clara Smith, have worked hard to gain for this store the reputation it now enjoys. Lorraine and Clara have built up a spacious toyland in the center of the store. They have in their employment a very capable janitor who you may remember as Eugene L'Huillier. Eugene has been happily married to Mary Ellen Rugg for years. Mary has a large amount of money invested in stock of several cigarette companies and together, Gene and Mary Ellen have built up their dreams. Many of the famous department stores are supplied with dresses from the very chic shop of Madeline Maes. Lyn designs the clothes and Betty Chomic stitches them. Their very pretty model, the former Miss Christine Skrocki, gives fashion shows throughout the entire world. Chris and her husband, Bernard Brown, travel extensively. His work as a News Com- mentator takes him to all parts of the world. Down the road a piece, we come to a very large airport. It is famous for the excellent flying instructions given by Bernard Bronakowski. While Burny is teaching the students, his wife, Betty Schweda Bronakowski, operates a drive-in for flyers. The planes are kept in excellent condition by mechanic Tom Nichols. Tom has made quite a name for himself with his specialty in the field of mechanics. He has saved enough to purchase a little farm for himself and his cute wife, Joyce Stetler Nichols. She manages the farm and we have heard that she recently won a blue ribbon for raising the largest bull.
