AQUILA PAGF 53 Football N EARLY September the football fans heard w1th great Joy MOHSlgUOFS declsxon that Salnt ohn H1gh School would aga1n be represented on the grldlron Wluen Father Boner Dlrector of Athletlcs sounded the call for candldates thxrty four pupxls re sponded NOfW1fllSE3I1dlI1g thelr age sxze and lack of experience these opt1m1st1c athletes determlned to show the publlc that they could hold thelr own with other teams throughout the state Coach Hannlgan capably assisted by Barney Colgan an ex All State back for 1943 and Roland St Onge an old Salnt ohns player and ohns Hopkms end whlpped the team IHIO shape After a few days of mtense strenuous work the season opened w1th a clash aga1nst Brewster Academy at MLm0f13l Field Salnt ohn s trlumphed 19 6 That was not enough' The team played four con secutrve games before tast1ng defeat at the hands of a heavy Frank lm squad The F1ght1ng Irxsh dld not let IIS first reversal quench xts ardor but continued to battle ICS way to glory The fall season ended w1th a record of four VICIOFICS two tles and three defeats Samt ohn s grldders made a spring debut and showed conslder able prowess ln a practlce scrxmmage with Manchester West Llttle Green then stepped out of lts class for a chmacttc clash wrth Dover Th1s game we hope was a forecast of what we can expect next fall from the Irlsh lads when they get hands and feet on the prgskm agaxn On the basxs of what has gone before the Greens wlll cer tamly hold therr own Success thxs year was due to the competent coachlng of Em mett l-lanmgan When he saw the players on the field for the first tlme they were a sorry slght Many a man would have gxven up m despair but Il0t Coach l-Iannlgan He lndeed deserves our whole hearted thanks whxch we readlly give hlm The future looks brlght for Samt John s football team for there w1ll st1ll be enough veterans on the fleld IH the fall to perpetuate the fame of the Frghtmg Trlsh Wzllzam Troy 45 ,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.f.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,., . . . x - 1 a 9 ' ' - a a 1 . .
