AQUII A PAGE 49 Football NE flne September day 111 1941 we jumped mto the old Model T and took a trlp up to Wltlte Park where St ohn boys were practxclng We took a look at the boys who were called by the papers grammar school klds and who were sald to be attempting a SLllClClC schedule Under the watchful eyes f head coach B111 Slattery and hrs able HSSISIHDI Phonzey flerlello the lads certa1nly looked small but they were blg 1 heart Only one veteran Captain Werber Nolxn had returned and around htm the squad was bemg built The first game was agamst Nashuas seconds a much larger and heavler team than that of the green shxrted warrrors of St ohn lt was a hard fought battle before the vmtors went oll the held VICIOUOLIS St LOUIS team from Blddeford next fought plenty before securmg a 64 vlctory Then a powerful Franklin team was held to a 7 7 deadlock by thes hghtmg mldgets Hamp ton Academy was lucky to w1n a 1412 battle and Tllton umor College was held to a 0 0 t1e The Llttle Green then Int the road for Hanover where they bowed to Hanover 1-hgh 190 111 a mud battle But that after noon they saw Wllll3h1 and Mary College nose out Dartmouth ln a 3 0 thrlller A week later the boys wound up thelr season by holding the Manchester Central seconds to a scoreless txe In every game the boys were outwelghed from ten to twenty pounds per man but Illell' hghtxng Splflt overcame the l1ck of wexght These lads showed that they could give and take 1ust as much as thexr opponents The boys appreciate all that Btll and Phonzey dtd to malc them better athletes and regret that they didnt make a better showmg To Phonzey now a prtvate IH the Unlted Stat s Army all send regards and mlsh h1m the best of luck to Reverend Father Kenneally faculty manager, the football squad IS smcerely grateful for all that he gave them for many years to next years team luck galore and a promnse of lusty rootmg at every game Through graduation the squad wlll lose Werber Nolm Andy and Frank lxarwockl oe Buckley Bob Andrews Idy Lassonde Larry Venne tmmy Baker oe Bout-don Bob Mmer Lawrence Smlth Tom Klng Ju Ju Clark and Rach Parker Rn hard Parker I-lfl-I-I-I-Al-l'l-I-I-1-1-1-I-1,1-1-1-1-1-1-1.1.,.1.,., 5 x x . l ' 7 re - as - ' ff ' ' 97 .
