Girls Basketball Team ARLY in anuary forty candidates answered the call for tryouts for positions on rhe baslcetball team From this eager group fifteen girls were chosen by the coach and athletic director M1 s Thornton to repres nt the school in the 1940 campaign Only three veteran players were on the squad so the practice was long and strenuous Soon rh players xx ere ready to m et their opponents Theresa Santamaria was elected captain and Ellenora Htgarty manager Several intramural games were played before three inter scholastic games were attempted A home and home game resulted in two def ats and a xictory This years work was prelm nary Big conquests art coming in the future F 11 ng the forward b rths were Captain Santamarxa Helen Payne Alma Comolli and ean Harr1son Subs were Mary Sull van Eleanor Palisi and Wiliifred Murphy. The guards were Ann. Long Mary Parker and Marie Painchaud aided by ai. Donovan Anna Karwoclci Theresa Cloutier Violet Pov, and Mary Shea. The senior players aslc but one favor of the next years squad to defeat our sturdy but friendly opponents the girls of St. Joseph High. Girls Athletics QOD schools supply physical education for all boys and girls The boys of St ohn High have sports the girls have gym Directed by Miss Mary Thornton the Class of 1940 started classes in physical instruction in the sopho more year and continued them until graduation The students early learned the great value of exercise they practised marching they began to play basketball Intramural teams were formed and each week exciting games were enjoyed during the class period During the junior year all continued to look forward to the Friday afternoon class s and to enjoy soft ball basketball and volley ln the fall of 1939 the enthusiastic seniors entered their last year of gym work with the determination to get all the benefit possivle from it After having practised weeklv they soon had players ready to try for pos tions on the basketball team Ths year the gym classes gave an exhibition at St ohns Hall so that the parents of ti girls mlgit know what progress had been made ump roping exercises march ing and folk-dancing were exhibited. Sports day was held at Hooksett on the fourteenth of May. junior and senior girls from every Catholic high school in the state partici- pated in games dancing and dart throwing. No period in the week is looked forward to with so much eagerness by every student in the high school as the Friday afternoon gym class when the girls can lay aside their books and enjoy the healthful games and exercises that promote sound vigorous bodies.
