AQUILA JPAGE 511 Football URNING the gr1d1ron spotlight on White Park St ohn High footballers were found contlnuing their qulet but deter mined practlce operat1ons With fifty hopeful candldates and only three regulars lost by graduatlon last une Coach Bill Slattery had all the indications of another miracle team Apparently resenting being looked upon as a breather by the Lake City Boys the Little Green fought Laconxa Hlgh to an amazing standstill as the famed Magicians of Coach Kmney had to come from beh1nd in the third period to gain a 66 tie in the first game of the season In the second engagement of the year the Fighting Irish again had to be content with a tie with the heavy Dover ayvees These were moral victories in themselves but the first victory for the records came when the Little Green broke a three year JIIIX by overcoming St Louis High of Bxddeford Maine 12 O St ohn I-Itghs second victory was acquired in the rustic amphitheater of New Hampton at the expense of the scarlet jerseyed ayvees R quiring two perlods to warm up the F1ght1ng Irish came through with a 25 6 triumph The followtng Saturday St ohn s continued down the undefeated trail by unleashlng 1ts full power agalnst a light Hampton Academy team to pile up a 38 0 score All good thmgs come to an end By the small margm of 7 O the St ohn squad was handed its first defeat by the Traip Academy eleven Even th1s was eked out only after the Ir1sh had driven to the elght yard llne had made a touchdown and then were called back by a ground rule In the final game of the year the Little Green came back still stinging from their hrst setback to pm a Z0 0 defeat on Malden Catholic as the Fighting Irish rolled to their fourth and final victory of the season Lost by graduation are Robert Dudley Charles Burke ohn Mmxchiello Walter McMahon William Sweeney Edward Klng Thomas Kmg Lorenzo Gilbert Augustine Faretra and Leo Har rison Captaln Paul Murphy g1V6S over hls chores to Captam Johnny Nolln with the hope that the success of the 1940 team may be as IITIPFBSSIVC as was ours Leo Harrzson 40 T , - J ' Q!
