I PAGE ssl AQUILA Then came 1938 and 1939 As dear juniors we trled our best to malce this a successful year The saylng go s perseverance w1ns success We persevered This may be appl1ed to the efforts of the junlors to make school and soc1al l1fe as pleasant as poss1bl Sandwtches all taste the same after a wlnle, so If was d Clded that hot dogs would be welcomed by the dally boarders Hot dog sales tool: place ln qulclc successlon As soon as the mustard stlng from the precedmg one had van1shed, another was held Many nights durmg the year at the hall on Pleasant Street, hghts were aglow and strams of muslc could be heard as th younger st waltzed across the floor These dances were attended by students of the htgh school and thetr frlends At the beglnnlng of thxs year, a new student, Anna Karwoclcx, arr1ved 1n our mtdst Glad we were to welcome her and sad were the gtrls of St os ph I-hgh to lose her Every class has tts leaders, and ours was no except1on One day, the entlre class gathered to elect IIS o'hce1s When the hnal votes were counted the four vtctors emerged ln the persons of Lorenzo Gtlbert, presldent, Ellzabeth Smxth, v1ce pres1dent, Berch mans Ollvler, secretary, ane Donovan, treasurer They have done thexr utmost to comply with the w1shes of thexr classmates Follow mg trad1t1on, we gave the senlors a banquet on the Sunday night precedmg graduatlon exercises The hall and tables were decorated xn the perfect harmony of green and wmt A short entertamment and addresses by the guests of honor followed the banquet On the followlng Sunday we were accorded the prlvllcge of standlng as guards of honor at the Commencement EXCFCISCS At last the great year had arr1ved We were Scmorsl lt was mcredlble yet tt was true As the days flew by, the students per formed thexr taslcs wllllngly and cheerfully To vary the routtne, Leo Harrlson redecorated the cclltng of the chemlstry lab Tnhrm l1mbs were stylxsh for one day when a rubber replaced a mfsplacecl shoe and a whlte paper bandage became a boomerang and fooled the wearer Home to dxnner students who were one half a mnnute late enjoyed the welcome, vometzmes At Christmas the lhalilllg of the crib, the Cl9COI'3E1I1g of the classroom, and attendance at the party revealed our art1st1c abxllty and our real Christmas splrtt Perhaps we enloyed If so much because we reallzed that for the last tlme we would enjoy Christ mas together as a class 1 ,, . . ,, . . . , A ' re 1 a , . ,, . . . . . . . 9 e. AQU11 A IPAGE wg C lass H :story REAT men and great nations have histories So too great classes leaxe to posterity the story of their progress The Class of 1940 one of the greatest and certainly the b st to be found 1n contemporary institutions of learning has a story perhaps too com pltx to be treated in detail, but so simple, and so interesting in parts that even a hrst grader may read it and learn to love school where those happiest days of youth are spent Wlien as freshmen, we entered school in Septemb r 1936 we were green in the eyes of our upper classmen, yet we refused to be overlooked, and soon started to prove that we were the best judges of our own ability This eventful year saw the formation of a Latin club known as Stgniferi the comm ncement of whist parties and the usual amount of time spent on th preparation of daily lessons Before the end of the year there was a large number of good coocs among the girls, as a result of the hom economics course, and when food was needed for any special occasion the best representatives of the culinary department were Minus a few former students, we began our second year of high school life Part of this year was slightly hectic, since, at Sister Ellens departure, there was confusion while arrangements were made for securing a substitute Various other Sisters attempted to continue distributing the seeds of the knowledge of English and Latin to the class Finally Miss Kearney Joined the ranks of those who patiently tried to explain Caesars Commentaries and who wanted to produce a few short story writers among the members of the class Euclid was tackled by some fortunate members, while others tried their skill at bookkeeping During the course of the year two more members enlarged the sophomore class Richard McLoy came from Ward 1 Penacook, while Lorenzo Gilbert ar r1ved from the La Salette Seminary in Enfield Time passed and social actlvitles were continued by the classes as they held their bi weekly whist parties but before long, dancing predominated over whxst Refreshments served their purpose by attractmg the boys to these socials This was Sister Almas last year in our midst She was transferred to St Marys in Claremont, from whence came S ster Magdalen to St John High . 1 X X I 3 A , . , ' 2 , , 7 ff 57 ' - . .
