Over the portals of St. John Fisher College, we find inscribed the lines - This is eternal life, that they may know Thee, the only true God, and jesus Christ, whom Thou hast sentf' When St. john Fisher was called to his death from the Tower of London, he took the New Testament in his left hand and passed out of his prison cell, blessing himself as he went. So weak he could hardly move, the guards carried him in a chair from the foot of the prison stairs to the Tower gate. When they reached the outermost precinct of the Tower, they rested. Fisher, rising from his chair, opened the Testament and gazing upward said: HO Lord this is the last time that I shall ever open this book: let some comfortable place in it now chance to me, whereby I, thy poor servant, may glorify Thee in this my last hourfj Then looking down at the place where the Testament happened to open, he read from the Gospel of St. John: This is eternal life, that they may know Thee, the only true God, and jesus Christ, whom Thou hast sentf, And closing the New Testament he said: Here is indeed learning enough for me to my life's endf' This is the testament handed down to St. John Fisher College by the patron saint. It explains the policy of the college as laid down in the first cata- log: St, john Fisher College aims to produce men who think, judge, and act constantly and con- sistently in accordance with right reason, il- lumined by the supernatural light of the ex- ample and teaching of Christfl The motto on the college seal commits the insti- tution to the teaching of goodness, discipline and knowledge? May 'the generations of students who, with Godis help, will pass through these portals learn to realize that the only true philosophy of life is that inscribed over the portals of Alma Mater. . . . taken from the 1952 dedicatory address of Bishop Kearney.
