The Braves advanced to the Big Five Quarter Finals. What makes this feat more incredible is the fact that only one year ago the Braves finished last in league action. At the beginning of the season there were doubts that the Braves would fare much better than last year. These doubts were soon erased. In the first two outings the Braves scored impressive wins. The Braves crushed rival Downey 28-3 and the following week they went on to beat a tough Santa Fe team, 14-7. The next two games proved to be a disappointment for the Braves. The team suffered heart- breaking back to back losses to Mater Dei and Bell Gardens by the identical score of 10-7 . Undaunted after these two losses the Braves hammered St. Bernard 27-0. This was the first shutout for Bosco in two years. The Braves looked tough as league play opened. They proved it by beating arch rival, Loy- ola, for the first time 23-10. The Braves improved their record as they downed Notre Dame 27- 13. Upending the Crespi Celts 2615 was a giant step in their quest for the league crown. Crespi had been the preseason favorite to win the league. The Celts took a 15-14 lead in the third quarter and it looked as if the Braves hopes were dashed. A fourth quarter rally, lead by senior Bob Murvin, gave the Braves the victory. As the final game of the regular season arrived the Braves were playing for the league title! They needed a tie with St. Francis to win the championship. The Braves did just that as they equalled the Golden Knights 13-13. With the league crown under their belt the Braves stormed the CIF playoffs with a 33-13 thrashing of West Covina. The next game proved to be the spoiler and the season ended. The tough St. Paul team wore down the Braves and defeated them 28-7. This year's season was the most exciting and most successful in St. John Bosco history. Through their dedication and hard work of the players and the coaching staff the Braves had gone from worst to first in one of the toughest leagues in the state. They really were the Mir- acle Braves of 1980. we 78 Varsity Football From-Worst . . . Upending the Crespi Celts 26-15 was a giant step in their quest for the league crown. Ai .ai .-g .. ff ..- - ' , ' v ', 1 AW Varsity Football From Worst . . .
