Being the first year for this sport, it had its trou- bles. Not only was it in constant competition with the members of Football, but now one knew how to play it. Coach Greg Tice managed to put together an awesome Frosh- Soph team and a fair Varsity Squad. For the first year it wasn't bad at all. The Varsity failed to gain a win, but even though they were underman- ned they never gave up without a battle. The Frosh-Soph went down to the wire and missed a playoff berth by one game. According to coach Tice our prospects for the future are looking better all the time. We have a lot of talent we are going to put to use. Awards-M.V.P. Varsity-Jay Winn, M.V.P. The stands were filled as everyone hoped for a win and a playoff berth. At half time the court was chauffered around the track in Trans Ams and Camaros. The court was then escorted across the field to await the announcement of the '79 Homecoming Queen. As fire- works spelled out her name, Annette Breslin was crowned the St. John Bosco High School Homecoming Queen for 1979. Tuesday was Hat Day but the hats were few and far between. On Wed- nesday, Tourist Day became an official event and was a hit as stu- dents got into their hard shoes, black socks, and Bermuda shorts. Thursday and Friday, Mike Ham- mond co-ordinated the events and put on a good show. The infamous apple juice chug-a-lug was replaced with the more civilized chocolate pie eating contest. Senior pig Jim W '? Melancon won this event. The jun- iors won the tug-o-war while the sophs won the new land skiing event. Senior Victor Paredes and Soph Tom Prukop put on a super arm wrestling contest which Victor won on a forfeit. However, the most spirited reaction came when Bob No Hair Rowe was chosen the winner of the hairy legs contest in a landslide. Father Nick Reina, the main speaker during the three days, challenged the students to get away from a legalistic concept of God as a distant ruler. Instead, Father Nick stressed that God is a loving Per- son with who we can have a close relationship. The Triduum culmi- nated with a beautiful outdoor Mass celebrated by Frs. However, a few class competi- tions were held to create some rowdi- ness. The second change was a move toward fewer rallies with the idea that fewer rallies would mean more spirit. As in the past, the junior class was the most spirited group with a different yell-leader mascot each week. Still the crowds are getting smaller and smaller and there isn't that much interest in them any more. Most of the people who attended were Freshmen and Sophomores. Though these people may have nothing better to do on Saturday nights, some found themselves hav- ing a real good time. The music was a different tune from last year. While Rock and Disco were slowly fading out, punk rock was the in thing. Such music as the B-52's, DEVO, Blondie, Flying Lizards etc. . . hitthe 5 Bosco dance floor. Taking center stage for these dances were the famous St. John Bosco Punk-Ftock- - ers, with their Devo glasses, odd looking costumes, colored hair pogoing and worming their way to fame. A new and different attraction was the Time Warp Dance from the t'Ftocky Horror Picture Show. Most People who weren't into this type of music just enjoyed rapping with their friends and meeting new people. Hopefully, dances will be revived as a center of attraction for all students, with a different beat, larger crowds, and a lot more fun. 1. Eric Robinson takes time to get to know someone. 2. In his ser- mon the Bishop stressed the impor- tance of putting trust in God. This was timely for the day because of the crises in Iran and Afghanistan. As Bishop Shubsda put it, We put our trust in nuclear weapons and nuclear technology, but this is not the answer, We need to put our trust in God because God is the answer. He will see us through. Besides these worldwide problems we have our own personal problems. Some- times if we are challenged we give up, we stop trying. The Bishop said this was a mistake, we need effort. In the greatest effort we will find sal- vation. Bishop Shubsda concluded, We should trust in God and make the effort. When we do this, we will fulfill our life. 1. This year's Brave broke away from the format set by the past Bosco newspapers. The Brave attempted to strike a balance in its articles between school-reIa- ted news and the happenings of broader concern. Co-editors Dennis Bendeck and Derek 0'Gorman led the way with their editorials focusing on the major concerns of the school. News editor Bob Da Silva was success- fully able to cover both the seri- ous and lighter sides of the news. His review column was one of the most anticipated features. Feature editors Mylin Watkins and Richard Ascarate tried to provide the news- paper with reports of current social events that affect the school, com- munity, and the world. Eric Robin- son and George 0'Gorman helped out the Bellflower Chapter of the Special Olympics by sacrificing a few Thursday nights at Thompson Pool. The most noticeable members on campus were Jose Mendiola, Jay Gutierrez, and Robert Zolg who did a find job taking money at the bas- ketball games. The club leaders were Mylin Watkins, Presidentg Ken Shoeman, Secretaryg Ed Earl, Trea- surerg Jose Mendiola, fund raisersg John Rogers, Special Projectsg Dave Cibrian, social directorg and Howard Nichols, publicity. it hyclub 95 Qwzfdub 540445618 WM eww 1. Club members participated with the Los Angeles Harbour Department in collecting examples of marine life and testing samples of the harbor's water and bottom for pollution. The students used a geo- logical dredge to collect bottom A plant and animal life. During one collection a rare heart urchin was found. Prehistoric Mastadon tusks have been dredged up on other trips. The members planned an underwater hockey team to com- pete with other local teams at vari- ous swimming pools. It is the newly formed Ham Radio Club . If you were somewhat observant, you may have noticed the fairly large antenna on top of the Science Building to serve the use of the club. The club's reason for existence was to add diversity to the science electives such as the Oceanography and Aerospace clubs already offered here. Ham Radio was a logi- cal extension of the curricular pro- gram since many students, some who even have F.C.C. licences to operate ham radios, showed great interest in this program. The financial cost to get this club off the ground was nothing, thanks to George Marquis, an amateur radio operator who supplied the necessary apparatus for this pro- gram. He also donated the use of the antenna. A storeroom also had to be converted into a base of operations for the young ham- sters to do their work. The Ham Radio Club's goals were to allow students to become more involved with their hobby, to serve as a public service station since it can receive emergency calls, and to establish a phone patch which allows dialing into the phone sys- tems of other countries without cost to such faraway places as South America and Antarctica. The Club is open for membership to anyone who has a French class at Bosco. The French Club probably won't be going to France, but they are getting as close to it as possible. Led by Mr. Mans- our, the club has really gotten off the ground. After a financial indifference with St. Joseph's at the end of last year, the club sought a new partner. They discovered that St. Matthias, another all girls school, was also searching for a French club partner. ijt 1. Mr. Mansour in a familiar pose. 2. D. Gutierrez, C. Florez, M. Tan, G. Qui- nones, M. Now the club has two partners instead of one. The money to sponsor these outings is made by Rice Krispie treats and lemonade sales. Even though Mr. Mansour is the modorator, he lets the council make the decisions. And the decisions are made well. Now the club looks to the future for even more outings. Most of all the club is a very proud club, led by intelligent officers and a popular teacher, and the motto to represent the club: VlVE LA FRANCE . M5 'i -X. Baclefwbtluaiimaslv In early December, Bosco's drama department persented Neil Simon's Odd Couple a comedy directed by Mr. Carl Castiglione. The play had to be a success in order for the renewed department to con- tinue, so the pressure was on. Days before the play opened, there were still frantic cries of, I don't remember my lines, and, Are you sure l'm supposed to be standing here? And ofcourse there were the technical difficulties - telephones ringing instead of door- bells, lights being turned on and off at the wrong times. Sound like a dis- aster? Well, it wasn't. Something about the magic of the theater and hours and hours of rehearsals that finally paid off. Opening night came and much to the actors' delight fand Mr. Casti- glione's reliefl it went over as a crit- ical as well as a financial success. There were a few rough spots' however, like an angry Oscar Madi- son fEric Knightj knocking a pickle into the audience, but aside from that, nothing too noticeable to the crowd. Not to be satisifed with just one production to make the return of the Drama Department, the crew put on You're a Good Man Charlie Brown at the end of February. According to the offficial Saint John Bosco High School Student Body Constitution Article I, section 2, The colors of this organization shall be royal blue, white, and gold. From 1947 till 1979 the code stated that hair should not touch the top of the ear. During the summer of 1979 the change happened The hair code regulations were loosened so that hair was allowed to grow till it was halfway down the ear What motivated this drastic change? Well, let Fr. Presenti explain: We made the change so that the code would be more acceptable to the students. Hopefully it will enable them to func- tion better in society. Has the new hair code been obeyed? Generally there has been com- pliance. But there always will be those who will disobey. Will the hair code be relaxed even further in the near future? Noi This is the max- imum the code will be loosened. Each group spent twenty-one days hiking from town to town in Northern Germany. The groups stayed in youth hostels and private homes. When the distance was too great between towns they went by train or bus. Their journey took them into the mid- dle of the NATO war games fwhere real ammunition was being usedj, to the con- centration camp where Anne Frank was intered, and to the school where Hitler trained young boys. The food consisted of coffee, tea and rolls for breakfast, lots of potatoes, veal, saurkraut, and traditional German drink for dinner. In all they walked 231 miles in twenty-one days. Yes they walked and walked and walked some more. But it was nice - it rained most of the time. Happily the German People were very friendly to these Bosco tourists. Finally the groups passed through cus- toms in Bangor, Maine on the return home. They all managed to bring home souvenirs, good memories of a wonderful experience, and no Money.
