N The Kids Love It Star Wars in Town Halloween came to La Mlracla early this year because a high school soph omore had two days oft trorn school That s not Darth Vader it s Tom Durazo I got the costume for a Halloween party but decrded to do thss because there wash t much else to do Tom Durazo born and raised in La Mirada dressed up like Darth Vader of Star Wars and hung around the corner at San Cristobal Dnve and Brola Ave giving away candy to kids from Rancho School for two days He bought the candy himself l thought lt would be fun and it turned out to be just that he said Tom, a student at St John Bosco Hugh School had two days ott because ot faculty meetings lsaw Star Wars sometlme back at was a good movle so l bought this cos tume tor Halloween he commented Tom Thomas crossing guard tor Rancho School at the intersection tor the past ten years said lt s all rlght with me, he doesnt obstruct traffic and the kids entoy it Many a Rancho School kld got home late Monday and Tuesday They turned right towards the cor ner to get their lotlypop from a Star Wars gent instead of turning left to go home Some people do some thnngs when they have spare time, but Tom Durazo does his thing. Shazbatl lt you walked down the hall of the science building this year and heard someone exclaim Shazbatl you may have won dered what it meant Was it a disease an acne preparation the Russian word for gra pelruit'P You may have been bewildered when Greg Puelz walked up to you and said Nannu nannu All this was prool that the invasion ot America by the planet Ork was spreading fast The instigator of all this was Robin Williams, Mork ot Mork and Mindy a new comedy series that quickly built a following among a whole generation The success of the show was without a doubt due to Williams ability to improvise His ad lib ol sometimes whole scenes had audiences in stitches and screaming tor more The sheer speed with which the jokes came at you wore you out with laughter and left you wondering which pans were in the script and which were ad lib It was so exhausting watching the show that you couldnt even do your homework during the commercials Friday mornings there were always several groups of students reviewing the Thursday night show and summarizing tor that poor unfortunate who couldnt watch it because his father threw a paperweight through the picture' tube when the Rams lost the NFC Championship to Dallas Those intellectuals who roamed Bosco's halls carrying huge stacks ol books also found somethingxinter estrng in Mork and Mindy since Mor otten made cracks on social issues and political figures, Even those who were too drab and mature for such childish glbberish watched just to see Mindy. Even if you never watched Mork and Mindy don't despair. By the time you're forty you'll be able to catch the reruns on channel 13 right after I Love Lucy.
