This futuristic aspect can be reflected in all areas of our high school lifestyle. Bosco students attend classes which will prepare them for college or a particular career. Some participate in athletics hoping for possible future scholarships. Coaches look forward to upcoming games and seasons. Teachers plan exams, classes, and lectures for weeks to come. Even through everyday planning and looking ahead to special occasions, we are focusing on the future. Each year the yearbook is dedicated to an individual to whom the students of St. John Bosco feel they owe a very special thanks. The individual selected this year in the academic community is held in the highest possible regard by his students and peers. As a teacher, coach, counselor, and most of all, as a friend, he possesses a unique combination of dedication, personality, ability to teach and the ability to relate to the students as individuals. With these qualities in mind, we dedicate this book to Mr. James Cross. Mr. Cross is an integral part of St. John Bosco. He is considered by his students to be an excellent teacher, making English fun and interesting. He has taken time to moderate clubs and organizations, to coach, and to act as dean and counselor. He is never too busy to help students with their class materialg to put the extra effort into his teams, to help his students with personal problems, or even to spend his free time writing letters of recommendation for seniors applying to college. We hope this dedication expresses our sincere gratitude for his help through our high school years. N . l it ,sf ex as .st F - xi vt.. fi mm. A fine group of Bosco volunteers helped in therapy programs with handicapped children from El Rancho Hospital and the Pace School. Another vital program of Christian Service is the St. John Bosco Blood Bank. This year, due to the courage of the Bosco Donors, many precious pints of blood were collected. It is services such as these that typify the cooperation and generosity of the students here at Bosco. ll 'Nil sf -nur -nau- I 45. X ...-sg. .,.,g,1, ,-53.5. V. Vg, , sbs.. 55? Editor Mike McNary and managing editor Tom Manix headed this promising group of journalists. Staff advisor Mr. Cross filled the journalism room with his wit and wisdom. This unit consisted of Katie Perry, Terry Beck, Angela Carfino, Cindy Buchannon, Jenny Miller, Marianne OlLeary, Daphne Shipp, Anna Albano, Nancy Brown, Joanne Devlin, Dorothy Yababen, and Terri Snider. Paulo Morales, Mario Hernandez, Bob Brazelton, Mark O'Bar and Jim Collozo composed the rest of the cheerleading combo. This enthusiastic group performed at rallies and games, providing teams with much-needed support and spirit. Their hard work and dedication throughout the year was greatly appreciated. The objective of this organization was not only to have fun, but to learn boating safety and general seamanship. Advised by Mr. Kent Halbmaier and led by commodore Bill Carroll, the Sailing Club grew to its largest membership ever. From the top: J. LaFleur, B. Carroll, D. Poissant, J. Saumur, Mr. Halbmaier, M. Members of the club speak with knowledgeable specialists from various fields of the space program. The underlying purpose of the club is not only to learn more about space research, but to help the members develop their own interests in science and discern a possible career. This year the California Scholarship g Federation nearly doubled in size. Under the direction of advisor lVlr. Lamb and officers Pat Loy fPresidentJ Paul Kaminski Nice Presidentj, Bob Boshetto Ureasurert, and Tim Duenas fSecretaryl, the club took on new meaning and significance. In past years membership in CSF has been just a great academic honor, period. This year however with the numerous fund-raisers and educational outings it has become a true club in every sense of the word. As well as sponsoring events and outings the CSF has provided an excellent tutoring service throughout the year. While CSF membership qualifications are still rigorous, membership increased greatly-this is due in part to the creation of a junior membership program. This year saw a valiant effort on the part of a number of students, who under the direction of Mr. Wright, formed themselves into a marching band. Their spirit and enthusiasm added a dimension all their own to our football games. After the marching season, many students left the band to play sports. But the students who remained showed a real dedication to music. These remaining members are entering a new phase for the Bosco Music Dept. with the creation of the Jazz Band. -msn, 'W my 1 Q if 3 3 Q If If Igliigf if . -1 .lb I if pf v . + 'M-v-wm.... .8195 A The administrative personnel at SJB have functioned like the watchmakers of a fine timepiece. As the salt water fragrance hits your nose, you become a part of the ocean. Looking out over the infinite white capped waves, you get a feeling of loneliness. Then you feel the cool brisk breeze coming off the ocean and you realize you aren't alone. The ocean is your companion! by Jay Miskiel The Eternal Question Murder, crime, sickness It seems as though it is all I can see And then I wonder when it will happen to me There is so much wrong in this world Something is terribly amiss But yet man hopes for that eternal bliss But here I have come to contemplate Away from the rest of the human race Hoping for some spiritual embrace So that I may find The true meaning of life Which would put an end to all of my strife But I am still questioning The One high above And the way in which He bestows His strange kind of love f I , J, 2 Q' M I? ,. This years Senior class made visible contributions to every facet of campus life at St. John Bosco. On the athletic fields, enthusiastic seniors motivated their teammates to do their best. In the classrooms, they set standards for future classes to follow. The senior student body officers gave the necessary leadership to get 'lost' classmates through a frantic year. But perhaps the thing that has distinguished the Class of '78 from all the others, is their unique spirit and unity during campus activities. During rallies, Frosh Week, Homecoming, and the Olympiad, the Seniors, behind some spirited leadership, displayed the vitality which has become their trademark and hopefully for which they will be remembered long after they are gone. Organized by Paulo Morales and the student council, the yearly event was successful and enjoyable. The preceding week was filled with a festive atmosphere, heightened by a hat day, a costume day and brightly painted signs and posters. On the day of the game, a huge rally was held in the stadium bleachers with the entire student body in attendance. The festivities included a hairy legs contest, class competition arm wrestling, an apple cider drinking contest and a student-faculty wheelbarrow race. That evening, the game, the main event of Homecoming '77, thrilled everyone. The half time crowning ceremonies and terrific fireworks display could only be equaled by the impressive last minute victory over Notre Dame 127-293 with a desperation long bomb pass. i-iuslvxxt, r rtgt, The Homecoming Queen VW' 1 A H1141 sul: , ,: V . In years gone by, Freshman initiation was the most feared event in the life of the new Bosco Brave. Recently, however, initiation has become a Senior-Frosh activities day consisting of games. This year the initiation encompassed inter-class competition between the Freshmen in which the loosing team of course went for a swim in the mud pit. It was a great spectator event due to the fact that there were two Seniors for every twenty-five Freshmen. Although outnumbered, the Seniors succeeded in showing the Freshmen who was boss while having a good time. 67 DANCES Dances were a real morale booster at St. John Bosco. They give the students a change from the everyday pressures of school. Between Bosco and our sister school, St. Joseph, the students enjoyed a dance at least once every three weeks. The bands hired for these events were usually polished performers. This year there was a new innovation, the disco dance. This was something the students enjoyed very much. ff-N i 3 l 9'??h- RALLIES , a.., n- . i - , ' gig +14 i 'Q S 4327 14 4, 'lf lr ,,,, I. sv 'rr , x W A l M , M i i e i oii in i -2 St. Joseph's Drill Team puts on a show at Homecoming rally. . With twelve junior starters and only one returning starter among the seniors, the Braves 4-5 season record should not be taken lightly. The Braves worked hard, led by co-captains Charles Pillon, Paul Davis, and Don Niklas, and played well against many playoff-bound teams. These efforts did not go unnoticed and ten St. John Bosco players received Del Rey League recognition. Those receiving first team all-league honors were seniors Charles Pillon, Don Niklas, and junior Dave Lira. Seniors Kevin Kelly, Rich Gardner, and Lou Acosta, as well as iuniors Dave Wehrly, Chris Topps, John Carroll, and Dan Fitzgerald received second team all-league honors. H956 KW gi I S s .... J . Cross-Country has always been misunderstood as only a subsidiary of Track and Field with little consideration to the enormous distance between the two. To emphasize the difference, the CIF and the Del Rey League initiated that commencing in 1977 the distance concerning a Cross-Country race be changed to three miles 14,838 metersl instead of the conventional two miles 13,225 metersl, demanding increased endurance, speed, dedication and desire. Despite the extension of the traditional two mile course the Braves advanced to be a team of spirit and steady improvement with seniors Don Beaver, Ken Gollersud, Tom Hunter and Greg Brownfield, the latter two on varsity. Junior Felipe Gonzalez lead the varsity squad for his second year in a row. Other obvious standouts were Junior Jim Hunter and freshman Brian Lewis.
