In sports, studies, and spiritual life, students continually strive towards this goal. This past year has been one of achievement. St. John Bosco High School no longer is a small school. Through the achievements of its students, our school has established itself in a prominent position among the high schools of South- ern California. 151 ,ni JM, ,wp ,Af Qtjzrhzz Hunan Stnslnrrlfmtur High Ethan! ,M t..:s:a'1riifiiz,x'1'xftt?3i34 Af'X.fRi'2lJlTr5n'l12i iw Proofs of Achievement M t E 5 Thu is .kffmihwci dxlmdx june 30, 253 911 3 5 '92 alta. mil ffmum 'Wzmirfzt at 'fiftltlfi xiitsiilaizaila if im 1 litany: 111151211 bg Ili 1 i ii: Q 1 ' K' miwrir.4mmz wwf iam 1. mma.m4f.m2,zm twain .ii fi i ze-mffayf imlfntrmal hmm: 'imrhi nf 9 r l I af Xiu Kahmml ilnazsahim ul Smmti in 'H E 2811979 65611 PU D315 541214213 ll K MH X mf www nw A ,mn it lm ilu Bun llxmm Sflmgizx r Ei Z 1 i 2 l Mfg Za . Homecoming 1969 Homecoming this year at St. John Bosco was an eventful happening. We had a bonfire rally at which the Cantwell Cardinal got roasted, and the next night our footballers really tromped on the Cantwell team. Highlight of the evening was the crown- ing of Elise Galipeau as Homecoming Queen and the installing of her court: Senior Princesses Laura Mansfield and Chris lVlottola, and Junior Princesses Jeanne Nudo and Kathy Perez. The festivities concluded on a gala note with a Homecoming Ball in the Skyroom of the Grand Hotel. f, V Fw. 2 :,, f R J Wi: if . t f Y i Q .. , 9 , ,, .A K .., 5 HJ K fa ,K ,AM 5 r f ' gg, X ., , 'ff f 'tux .k J ' ., 3 1 2 K X g 1 R '1 - Q-. ,ist E . 5 X of t N t t t ,.,, 2' t A i i , Freshman Initiation a story without words . . At the beginning of the 1969 season, many people said that because of the loss of 20 of 22 starters from last year's team, the Brave Varsity football team would be hard pressed to make a decent showing. But as pre-league games progressed, the Braves proved that they once again would be Santa Fe League contenders. After playing three games in league, St. John Bosco and Damien found themselves atop the league stand- ings, both with 3-0 records. Thus the stage was set for a titanic struggle between the two teams. The game was played on a cold rainy evening. A valiant Brave bid for a second consecutive Santa Fe League title was stifled by the mud and the Spartans. In the final week of the season, the Braves defeated a fine Verbum Dei team by 7 points, as the Seniors played their last game on the Brave Field. A recap of the season showed that most of the line- men who started and finished the season had never before played at positions they filled this year: people like Bill Reid, Dan Bridges, Mike Pearring, Mike McCarthy and Mike lwasiwka. All had a hand in the fine 6-3 season the Braves had. Of course any mention of Brave Football 1969 has to include the great back- field of Jim Loy, Art Armijo, Glen Cardarelli and Darnell Johnson, who all turned in very fine jobs. Then the people who had experience at their positions- like tackle Ray Paradis, guards Paul Bellenbaum and Ken Kapono and ends Kevin Trechter and Tom Ramirez. These and the rest of the Brave team made up a group of light but quick-hitting people with desire who achieved a 6-3 record and a season Brave fans can remember for a long time. fx-KF ABOVE-'Twas a rainy night against Damien as Brave hopes for a CIF play-offs went down the drain RIGHT-Offensive line is poised like an arrowhead, as Quarterback Glen Cardarelli readies to receive snap from center Mike Pearring second league title and me ST. All three teams-Varsity, Bee and Novices-won the champion- ship of their league in most convincing fashion: 10 d u al meet wins and not a single defeat. Such kind of excel- Ience got the Braves into CIF Finals for the second straight year. With so many dedicated runners, 'tis hard to single out individual efforts. But certain- ly the performances of Bob Arce, Steve Shea and Tom Koppes of the Varsity should be noted. Likewise, those of Bees Greg Donahue and Den- nis Arce. Individually, Coach Tom Maples could single out several Braves for a job well done. Among them were Sophomore Nick Hayman, who holds the sch ool record in the 50-fly 1:27213 Freshman Tom Thorman, who has a :24.5 50-freestyle to his credit, Junior John Kane whose 1:10 in the 100-breast- stroke is significant because it is 15 seconds faster than last year, Sophomore Mike Schaadt, an outstanding distance swim- mer, and Sophomore Carl Topps, a strong varsity sprinter whose times keep coming down. Overall, Maples could take sat- isfaction from the added experi- ence his team has gained this year. iNote that all the swim- mers listed above will be back again next year.J in addition, a good turnout of frosh points to a continuing pro- gram at the school. Thus, individual effo rt and added experience plus the large number who will be on hand next year all add up to a suc- cessful swim season at St. John Bosco. ennis ST.
