More delicate and intricate too. Bosco is in the construction busi- ness heart and soul. The men involved are professionals dedicated to the adventure of complete education. Like any successful construction firm, Bosco uses idea men, architects, engineers, foremen, and personnel management to get the big idea off the boards and into reality--to make each boy the best man he can be. The men on the Bosco construction team, how- f 45 fm ,J - 'inf-L- .5 FM ever, go by other names: counsellor, teacher, principal, coach. ff 1 ,A l fY U-as Y not , -'2 f - DEDICATION To you, Father Malloy, our sincerest thanks. Over the years as principal from 1954 to 1958 and again from 1963 to 1965, you have been ar- chitect, toreman and laborer in the building of men and minds here at Bosco. ln gratitude for this we pledge to you, as newly appointed superior of the Salesian Province of St. Andrew--western United States and Canada-our enduring support and good will. And to you, a master-builder, we dedicate the 1966 BRAVE. ef - k -9,1 , S : A3 .-. . The theme that you have so graphically expressed through this '66 edition of THE BRAVE speaks to the point. You came to Bosco as mere boys. You have undergone a process of evolution which, with robust precision, you have chosen to label: men under construction. I trust that Commencement will in no sense put an end to it all. True, the building appears roughly complete, don't let yourselves be deceived! The structure MAN takes a lifetime. And when you receive your copy of this annual, a lifetime is pre- cisely what lies ahead. Whatever you do, don't stop constructing now! Show your gratitude and allegiance to Bosco by adding to the building at once . . . gradually supplying all the delicate finishing touches that, paradoxically, the hard knocks of the open world ahead will inevitably provide. God build with you! lRev.l Joseph J. Rapport is another word for Boscoism. It means reaching out to the student. The boy is more than a subject-learner, and the educator, more than a subiect-teacher in this way of Don Bosco. Salesian rapport is this something more. lt is the unspoken agreement that underlying the daily human struggle toward knowledge with its breakthroughs, disappointments, disciplinary skirmishes there is a firm, Christ-like, teacher-student friendship, so firm, that disagreements and failures and time itself never really damage it. Friends of this make don't have to look alike or think alike or even meet often . . . they iust have to be friends. DON BOSCO'S WAY WH: ANiMAs ceretlli M S QXXX -Xa 1 1 i X... We, the Seniors of St. John Bosco, could not help but ponder over this when last October our classmate, David Melbourne, was killed in a traffic accident. This made each of us realize how very short and uncertain life is. Now we strive to make our lives more meaningful, more useful to our- selves and to others, in constant preparation for what lies beyond. Dave, who was born on August 30, l948, to Dr. and Mrs. Edwin Melbourne, was a graduate from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Grammar School in Downey. He enrolled as a freshman at Pius X High School but trans- ferred to Bosco the following year. He was to graduate this year as a member of the class of I966. For two years the Press Club has con- tinued its almost obscure but vitaltunc- tion of spreading word about SJB with surprising efficiency. Calling in scores and writing in game stories and news columns are the two major duties that the members have taken upon them- selves. Their purpose is to acquaint the thousands of unfamiliar readers of the local papers with up and coming SJB. PHOTO CLUB An interest that has always been strong at SJB is photography. Every year growing numbers as- semble after school in the darkroom to spend hours developing prized snapshots. This year even Fr. Director got into the act, as Fr. Joseph Mediati, a zealous camera bug from way back, scampered up and down the football field clicking off photo after photo. Dan's polished speakers added appreciable culture with a variety of renditions. In recent Lions Club com- petition, Senior Roger Repohl took first place and Don Waldie took third in their respective divisions. First in spiritual significance among all the clubs at Bosco are its sodalities. Pictured here is the Blessed Sacrament Sodality, which is a group composed of the freshman members of our school. This sodality is formally established in the school, and accept- ance into it follows a period of careful screening by the Mod- erator and other co-workers. Sodalities are the moral uplifters, the religious spearheaders at Bosco. Sodality membership is likened to a second reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation, whereby one is strength- ened and made fearless to give good example consistently, to receive and get others to receive the Sacraments frequently. Bosco's Sodalists are the spiritual leaders of tomorrow!- The Blessed Sacrament Sodality, moderated by Brother Tom Bernlson. Wkllllli 5070 The Saint Dominic Savio Classroom Club was founded on March 5, l950, by the Salesians of St. John Bosco, in the United States of America. The club was organized to present the life and virtues of St. Dominic Savio to American youth of the elementary and iunior high schools of the United States. In over 4,000 Catholic elementary and iunior high schools in this country, 500,000 school children have pledged to live their lives in imitation of St. Dominic Savio and to practice purity in word, deed and thought. Units have been established in all the states of the Union. Programs of religious, athletic and social nature have been organized. Through these programs, chil- dren are encouraged to love and practice virtue, to live and work with one another, to love prayer and to receive the Sacraments of Penance and Holy Eucha- rist often. The Bosco chapter of the Savio Club was lust estab- lished this year, under the leadership of Brother Hank Tavera. We know that the club will live up to its ex- pectations and will become a worth while, and bene- ficial organization on the Bosco campus. l 2l X Q L XX -S. N' -N QS Nw. . 1-N x -- X. . . A. Although the play was only forty minutes in length, its technical precision and acting virtuosity, in the opinion of many, surpassed all pro- ductions seen in the last several years. lt the Drama Club can continue this tradition in coming semesters, we certainly have something to look forward to. In this scene, the little devils dance and sing l36s Oliver, played by Mark Brush, sings a forlorn song of lost love. There isn't a wasted word in the Broadway production Oliwir, and its melodies spell a simplicity and purity unique in the thea- ter today. The theme of Oliver, as the classic Dickens tale sug- gests, is a boy's search for love. The essence of the novel is cap- tured in Olive-r's song, Where is Love? and is carried even to the notorious criminal Fagin, who is what he is because he too was never loved. lronically enough, in our adapted musical sketch, put on by our Little Theater Players on March I8 and I9, I966, the plot is twisted and the outcast Oliver finds more love among the outcasts than he did in society. Oliver is given u talking-to by the spindly-legged, cigarette- puffing Artful Dodger, portrayed by Tom Wilson. The Dodger snickers while poor little Oliver laughs it right off.
