QW! 4 Wfwwff X mnfffffwffffffu few nights later to break the school scoring record against Port Carbon That team was swamped under a 63 12 score Allison had a great night with 25 points The following night we made it a perfect week end by beating Mauch Chunk on their own court by 30 8 Close guarding featured the game, the Chunkers only getting two baskets The next game was against Coaldale and was one of the best of the year Coming to town with one uctory ox er us they were the favorite to wm, but basketball is uncertain and the Lions playing one of their real good games walked off the floor with a 3717 victory The game was rough, and our ability to shoot fouls helped considerably We made 18 out of 25 This closed our regular season, but as several weeks of winter still remained, St erome s decided to run something never before attempted by a coal region Catholic school, that is, a basketball tournament As most of the teams had Finished their season the entries were limited to four clubs The Hrst game was between St erome s and Allentown Central, a team that had defeated us twice during the regular playing season We knew we could lick them and we did by the decisive score of 78 17 In the other prellmmary game St Ann s of Freeland dropped a thriller to Pottsvllle 76 24 Interest in the tournament was 1nountmg and on Friday April lst, a capacity house turned out for the final game The game was close and exciting, but Pottsville played better basketball and became Catholic champions by the score of 74 to 18 In conjunction with the tournament a foul shooting contest was also held Hogleman of Allentown captured this giving a fine exhibition, shooting thirty out of thirty five attempts In starting the tournament we believe that St. Jerome's has started some- thing that will revolutionize Catholic high school basketball in this part of the state. It is hoped that a league may be formed next year so that interest in the sport may be increased. Two games followed with Lansford Catholic, both of which were won by the following scores, 29-18 and 19-14. The Games were coming a little too close together, because the team played loose basketball in defeating Allentown Catholic by a 26-15 count. The passing was fair but the shooting was the worst of the season. The next game was a return contest with La Salle at Philadelphia. On a court much larger than any in this part of the state they nosed us out by a 23-17 score. We would like to take this opportunity to thank La Salle for its wonderful hospitality. While the game was lost the boys enjoyed themselves, as they spent the week-end in Philadelphia. We started March 011 wrong by again dropping a close game to Allentown Central by the score of 22-18, but to show their mettle the boys came back to Page ly one
