' I 0 f Mfwfffl Basketball bquah The basketball team of the past season was the best in the history of St. erome s. Twenty-three times the boys took the floor against the best opposition in the eastern part of the state and fifteen times they came off a winner. The seniors on the team were Allison, Gerrity and Coleman, and with Knowles, Whetstone, Truskey and Murphy back for next year's team, we can look forward for a successful basketball year. The team got under way on December 18th by defeating Mauch Chunk Catholic by a 29-18 score. For the first game they looked good, and continued the improvement the following week when, on Tuesday night, they bowled over the fast McAdoo team by a 25-15 count. We were now ready for bigger things and set sail for Shenandoah High during the holidays. The game was fast and thrilling throughout, but by a last quarter spurt Shenandoah rompecl home with a 32-28 decision. And then came that game we were all looking forward to. Once more we would see the stars of yesteryear in action. We did but their lights were somewhat dimmed by a 33-18 lacing. 2 On October 10th we faced the biggest hardest and the best football team that St Jeromes in the three years of competition has had occasion to play Shenandoah High School undefeated all seison and every inch 1 state chain pion The score was 35 O but while we were beaten we were far from bemg disgraced On October 17th St erome s rose to the heights and outplaycd 1 powerful Minersville High team A heavy favorite before the game the big blue club could not penetrate the stubborn resistance of the Lions 'md were lucky to come off with a tie No one individual could be mentioned as starring although Andy Coleman played a great game at end when he went in during the second ha We had an open date on the 74th and toolt 1 much needed rest The 30th found us in Shenandoah facing a greatly improved and altered Catholic High team The game was hard fought and close all the way the final score bemg our third 0 0 game of the year The last month of football arrived and with it came Nesquehomng High hailed as champions of the Carbon Schuylkill League In the first half we outplayed and outfought their team and going to the dressing rooms at half time held a 13 12 edge but in the final half their size and numbers had a telling effect and their smooth attack smothered us under a 30 13 score B111 Gerrity looked good in this game and the calling of plays by Matth vas was also worthy of commendation On November 14th we visited the wind swept gridiron of the Red and Black of Mahanoy City The playing on both sides was ragged and play was hampered by a wind of gale like proportions The score was 75 0 and once more our colors were dipped in defeat On November 71st McAdoo presented its undefeated steam roller for our approval With four regulars on the side lme we dropped a loosely played game 20-0. Then came Thanksgiving and with it Coaldale High, our traditional rival. Before a good crowd we started off by taking the ball to the one-foot line only to lose it on downs. The first half play was all St. Jerome's although Coaldale connected for a long pass and a touchdown. In the final half they outplayed us and won by the score Z0-7. Allison, Sarli, Young, Gerrity, Matthews and Coleman finished their High School careers with this game and played well. ' It is htting here that we should give tribute to one of our boys who, by work and diligence, was picked by the sport writers of this territory on the All-County football team, Gilbert Allison, a hrst-class center, a good student and a worthy ideal for all future athletes of our high school. To him we offer our congratulations and best wishes for continued success when once more he dons the moleskins for some school of higher education. -' c fr Q 6 x ' . Two games followed with Lansford Catholic, both of which were won by the following scores, 29-18 and 19-14. The Games were coming a little too close together, because the team played loose basketball in defeating Allentown Catholic by a 26-15 count. The passing was fair but the shooting was the worst of the season. The next game was a return contest with La Salle at Philadelphia. On a court much larger than any in this part of the state they nosed us out by a 23-17 score. We would like to take this opportunity to thank La Salle for its wonderful hospitality. While the game was lost the boys enjoyed themselves, as they spent the week-end in Philadelphia. We started March 011 wrong by again dropping a close game to Allentown Central by the score of 22-18, but to show their mettle the boys came back to Page ly one
