Peg came in just at this moment. Explanations were in order. Peg told us that she and Jane had taken the Home Economic course at College, and upon returning home had established this shop. It now had a large patronage and was very successful. We sat reminiscing for hours. Here I learned that Kathryn Valen- tine was now in Paris doing her work as instructress in a Parisian art school and that Betty Hegarty was the wealthiest and most renowned member of the class. All aboard for unior, the captain s call found four among he missing, but two newcomers joined our ranks which gave us our present graduating number, twenty-two who leave the portals of our Alma Mater as the Class of 32. With the appearance of Chemistry and Virgil on our curriculum our further success seemed dubious, but on reviving our spirits the outlook seemed less gloomy and our goal more certain. The Seniors were making preparations to leave and we were disheartened at the thought of having to do the same in one short year. It was during the last quarter of this year that the Lionls Call was issued. The co- operation of the four classes made it a success. In every case the thoughts were of the Almighty Power of God. there any thought more worthy than that of Hiiia who created you and me? Therefore, trees and the thoughts which they bring to the mind may be said to be one of the many reasons why we should strive to gain the end for which we were created, that is, eternal happiness with God and His Angels and Saints. A tree that may in summer wear A nest of robins in her hairg Upon whose bosom snow has laing Who intimately lives with rain, Poems are made by fools like me, But only God can malze a tree. Y . . s 4 1A1aw11A11 I WMM, ,1 ivuttess Success in life is to be regarded as a means not as an end There is such a thing possible as unsuccessful success, such a thing as gaining every end in this world while the whole life has been a failure A proverb that we should always keep in mind is What doth it profit a man if he gain the whole world and suffer the loss of his soul? Our soul s salvation is the final test of the value of earthly prosperity, and unless our lives be guided by these memorable words, we shall have lived in vain We were sent into this it orld to know, love and serve God in this world and to be happy with Him forever in the next If our actions are performed with this in view that is, every act with love and service for God, we will achieve success, but it will be God given success To Know Every man is given a mission to perform in this world He has received the necessary talents for doing his work One must know for what work he has been assigned Having found out, then he must work his work because it is his duty To Love-If man, after knowing his mission, fills it not for some earthly gain, but for the honor and glory of God, then he is fulfilling the second end of his creation and climbing the ladder of success To Serve Service shall this lead to success? Yes, if the known mission is fulfilled by you, for love of God Remember service cannot be given by proxy, you must be your own helper, and you must be watchful and diligent. If uyourl' service is to be what the world calls humble, and you carry it with self-respect and with an exalted soul, it may be made honorable. If your service is one which is honored and envied by your fellow-men, be watchful lest this worldly success rob you of the real success. It is a rare gift to keep the heart fresh and enthusiastic amid all distractions of a busy life. It is a rare gift not to be thrilled with pride when one is being incensed with admiration and glorified with his success, but it is within everyone's power to be mindful of his soul, and the end for which he was created, and with this in mind he will be a successful success. Leno Perdelli, '32, Page lhzrly-four W ffIWMWWWWWW! ffffffff14ffkMM I Qhhantages of Zlnhentwns Our universe has literally been revolutionized by the products of the inventive powers of several of our American inventors Before the invention of the Cotton Gin by Eli Whitney in 1793 only ten thousand bales of cotton left tne United States each year The gin increased the export so that at the time of the Civil War over four million bales were sent to Europe daily Toward the end of the next century our means of illumination was to be transformed In the days of our forefathers lighting was accom plished by means of lcerosene lamps or gas, but due to the efforts of Thomas A Edison, these are replaced by the incandescent electric bulb We are also indebted to Edison for many inventions that have lessened labor, made worlc more efficient, and afforded means of enter tainment which centuries ago would have been scorned as impossible The labor in the home has been reduced considerably by his experi menting with Electricity, for example the Electric Washer The house wife may fill the washer, turn switch, then enjoy her breakfast and attend to other duties while the wash is being done The Electric Iron does 1w1v with the endless tending to stoves and the waiting for flat irons to heat The Electric Sewing Machines which can operate as high as six hundred stitches per minute This is fully three times faster than the foot operator Phe Electric Range in respect to quality of cooking is undeniably superior to that of either gas or coal range. The electric range serves the purpose of cooking and draws energy only when in use. The farmer also has earned his reward from the discoveries of the marvels of electricity. The gas and steam engines have been replaced by electric motors. We can readily see that electric force can be intelligently applied to practically every operation which previously entailed hand labor. By the application of the Electric Telegraph, Alexander Graham Beli achieved another great marvel--the Telephone. This is a medium of conveying messages by the human voice. Doctors may be called to the aid of the sick. Business affairs attended to. In fact all modern life is linked with this instrument. .9 S .' s -. Q .S - ' IW f f . When we know of what we are going to write, we should con- sider carefully the choice of words. Put thoughts in writing then re-read several times making such changes in placing and ranking both matter and words, so that our composition will be clear and emphatic. By listen- ing to the best speakers and reading the works of the best authors we will make their thoughts and expressions our own, thereby obtaining a large vocabulary and a varied style of writing. For just as in an instru- ment, so in style, there must be a harmony and consent of parts. If these suggestions are adhered to, with practice one will become a good writer. The object of the Association is to promote the interest of Student Govern- ment and to stimulate interest in all activities than represent the school. The duties of the President and the Assistants are to be present at all meetings of the councilg to have all members co-operate in maintaining proper school discipline, to force regulations for the cleanliness of the school and school property, and above all, to maintain silence in corridors and in classrooms. In the event that any member of the school misbehaves to the extent that further disciplining is necessary, he or she is brought before the executive head of the Student Government, the judges and assistants, who carefully consider the case and sentence the offender according to the misdemeanor. My own opinion of Student Government is that it is a great advantage in as much as it has been adopted in our High Schools and Colleges. It leaves the student to feel that he or she has a direct interest in his co-workers, welfare as well as helping to put the student more or less on an honor system, thereby creating a feeling of greater responsibility in school discipline. A Wm1 111ff ipnrts Utes When the call for candidates for the 1991 football edition of St erome s was sounded the prospects were anything but bright Only two members of the great team of 1930 were on hand and the rest of the boys were small and inexperienced After a weeks preliminary drill at Sea Isle City we returned to Tamaqua and got down to hard work. By the time of the opening of the season we were fairly well trained in fundamentals and were anxious to test our plays and try our strength against a worthy opponent. Shenandoah Catholic High furnished the opposition for the season,s opener. Many errors were made but we came through with a 12-6 decision. Long runs by Sarli and the deadly tackling of Allison featured the game. On September 26th we visited our old rival, Coal Township. The weather for football was ideal and the crowd witnessed a hard fought battle. Both sides had a chance to score but lacked the necessary punch. The final score was O-0. Our second game at home found Mauch Chunk Catholic lining up against us. We defeated them 15-O, the result of two touchdowns and a safety. Young Adam Gigli found himself in this game and made several nice runs, aided by some good interference. Page arty eight 2 On October 10th we faced the biggest hardest and the best football team that St Jeromes in the three years of competition has had occasion to play Shenandoah High School undefeated all seison and every inch 1 state chain pion The score was 35 O but while we were beaten we were far from bemg disgraced On October 17th St erome s rose to the heights and outplaycd 1 powerful Minersville High team A heavy favorite before the game the big blue club could not penetrate the stubborn resistance of the Lions 'md were lucky to come off with a tie No one individual could be mentioned as starring although Andy Coleman played a great game at end when he went in during the second ha We had an open date on the 74th and toolt 1 much needed rest The 30th found us in Shenandoah facing a greatly improved and altered Catholic High team The game was hard fought and close all the way the final score bemg our third 0 0 game of the year The last month of football arrived and with it came Nesquehomng High hailed as champions of the Carbon Schuylkill League In the first half we outplayed and outfought their team and going to the dressing rooms at half time held a 13 12 edge but in the final half their size and numbers had a telling effect and their smooth attack smothered us under a 30 13 score B111 Gerrity looked good in this game and the calling of plays by Matth vas was also worthy of commendation On November 14th we visited the wind swept gridiron of the Red and Black of Mahanoy City The playing on both sides was ragged and play was hampered by a wind of gale like proportions The score was 75 0 and once more our colors were dipped in defeat On November 71st McAdoo presented its undefeated steam roller for our approval With four regulars on the side lme we dropped a loosely played game 20-0. Then came Thanksgiving and with it Coaldale High, our traditional rival. Before a good crowd we started off by taking the ball to the one-foot line only to lose it on downs. The first half play was all St. Jerome's although Coaldale connected for a long pass and a touchdown. In the final half they outplayed us and won by the score Z0-7. Allison, Sarli, Young, Gerrity, Matthews and Coleman finished their High School careers with this game and played well. ' It is htting here that we should give tribute to one of our boys who, by work and diligence, was picked by the sport writers of this territory on the All-County football team, Gilbert Allison, a hrst-class center, a good student and a worthy ideal for all future athletes of our high school. To him we offer our congratulations and best wishes for continued success when once more he dons the moleskins for some school of higher education. -' c fr Q 6 x ' . Twenty-three times the boys took the floor against the best opposition in the eastern part of the state and fifteen times they came off a winner. The seniors on the team were Allison, Gerrity and Coleman, and with Knowles, Whetstone, Truskey and Murphy back for next year's team, we can look forward for a successful basketball year. The team got under way on December 18th by defeating Mauch Chunk Catholic by a 29-18 score. For the first game they looked good, and continued the improvement the following week when, on Tuesday night, they bowled over the fast McAdoo team by a 25-15 count. We were now ready for bigger things and set sail for Shenandoah High during the holidays. The game was fast and thrilling throughout, but by a last quarter spurt Shenandoah rompecl home with a 32-28 decision. And then came that game we were all looking forward to. Once more we would see the stars of yesteryear in action. We did but their lights were somewhat dimmed by a 33-18 lacing. Two games followed with Lansford Catholic, both of which were won by the following scores, 29-18 and 19-14. The Games were coming a little too close together, because the team played loose basketball in defeating Allentown Catholic by a 26-15 count. The passing was fair but the shooting was the worst of the season. The next game was a return contest with La Salle at Philadelphia. On a court much larger than any in this part of the state they nosed us out by a 23-17 score. We would like to take this opportunity to thank La Salle for its wonderful hospitality. With this preface, we shall append a brief outline of the present activ- ities and occupations of St. Jerome's alumni, who wish the class of 1932 every success and happiness which can crown a career well-spent. May they take their place on the stage and play their parts in a manner which will bring glory to them and honor to their Alma Mater. ..Qlilb.- lass uf 1927 Ruth Hanlon chose the better artl' and is now Sister San Gre orio 1 . g , I.
