The boys were eager to play good ball and had an extremely good season because of this eagerness. Al- though they were competing with excellent teams they held first place nearly all season by virtue of their flawless kicking and pas- sing, the precision with which they ran their plays, their bloodthirsty tackling and block- ing, their spirited scrimmaging. This skill did not come easily. There were practices on the back campus through sun, mud rain and sleet. The Falcons persevered with this goal in mind that they would retain the championship won the year before. Because of their diligent practicing the Falcons were in perfect condition and, as a result, there were few injuries. Every Falcon game was mar- ked by football played in the true tradition of St. Jerome's. Although hard fighting, they were also known for their sportsmanship from the first game to the last. They lost the championship on a technic- ality. St. Mike's protested the loss of a game because St. Jerome's had used ineligible players, players who had played Senior ball to bolster the undermanned Senior squad. Father Killoran, our athletic director, tried to defeat the protest, but he was unsuccess- ful. Eli During the 1952-53 basketball season St. Jerome's Senior basketball team, the Lions, continued to enjoy the fine cage reputation which it has merited since basketball was in- troduced to St. Jerome's. The team was prob- ably the most powerful that ever played in Green and Gold spangles. Coach Clem Faust had some difficulty at the season's start to em- ploy that power to its best advantage, but once the Lions hit their stride their combin- ation of dead-eye shooting, smooth passing and all-round 'heads-up' basketball was a formid- able threat. The Green and Gold made a clean sweep of their own league, the O.C.A.C., losing but two of their scheduled games, and these to St. Mike's by close scores. The Lions set a new all-Ontario high scoring record when they defeated DeLaSalle 125-L9. In the playoffs St. Jerome's found little difficulty in re- taining the O.C.A.C. championship which it has held since the inauguration of the league St. Mike's attempt to wrest the trophy from St. Jerome's proved inadequate in the first playoff at St. Mike's when they were defeated 58-56. In the second game the Irish seemed to collapse before the flawless performance of the Lions on their home floor and relinquish- ed their bid for the title, being thoroughly trounced 91-56.
