JEAN'S LEGACY: A CHRISTIAN EDUCATlON,'was chosen as the theme of the 1953 Profile. For twenty-six years this high school has passed on to its students an education based on Christian principles and flavored with the ideals of the Catholic Religion, and realization of the importance of each individual. This yearbook gives you St. Jean High School of 1952-1953. It is the story of the work, the pleasures and the life of the students here. ln its pages we have enshrined cherished memories of our yesterdays in Church, school and social gatherings. But this book is not iust like any other carefully planned record of a year's progress and work, for when the final page of the Profile has been closed, an epoch will also be closed. Yes, after twenty-six memorable years, St. Jean High School is going to step aside for progress, for the completed dream, Greater Muskegon Catholic Central High School. Yet St. Jean High School will live in the hearts of the men and women it equipped and sent into the world. For an institution which played such an imporant role in the shaping of so many lives can hardly be completely forgotten. The Class of 1953 accepts with gratitude the rich legacy be- queathed by St. Jean -A CHRISTIAN EDUCATION. - Cecile A. Rochon 2 HIS HOLINESS, POPE PIUS XII The aim of Christian Education is . . . to co-operate with the Divine Grace in forming Christ in those regenerated in Baptism. Addressing pupils and teachers in a recent address, His Holiness, Pope Pius XII, reminds the youth in this present era of the need of continued education, for an ignorant people is defenseless and at the mercy of skilled agitators or unscrupulous politicians. The right to vote, which gives everyone an equal voice in public life, de- mands of the persons who exercise it at least an elementary notionlof political principles and their application within the national and international sphere of poIitics. 3 , 1. . Joseph Poulin, whose zeal for Cath- olic education transformed an idea into a high school with a glorious history. Under the supervision of the Sisters of Mercy, the students have won honors and acclaim in scholastic fields, athletic achievement, and Christian social life. Through the energetic endeavor of the Very Rev. William E. Fraser, the school has progressed and will continue to form the basis of the future classes for Catholic Central. Here, within the shadows of this building, bodies were strength- ened, minds were formed and souls were developed in accordance to Christian teachings. 4 The Most Reverend Francis J. Haas, Bis- hop ot Grand Rapids, an outstanding and zealous, educator, opened opportunities for the youth of Greater Muskegon in the erection of the spacious and well-equipped Catholic Central which will, in September l953, enroll hundreds of boys and girls, who will be the grateful recipients of an adequate program of Christian education. to Catholic entml Qf Ns. Louis LaPres, the newly appointed principal of Catholic Central, just after having toured the new school. Class of 1953. . . You, the Class of 1953, have reached a milestone in your life. You must make choices, you must choose. Sometimes not a great deal depends on what you choose, often very much depends on it. Your choice may be one of life and death, even of eternal life and death. Your most important choice is that of motives and reasons for doing things. Our glor- ious Faith, which you have studied here at St. .lean's School, will supply you with the best of motives. Make your choices in the light of your Faith. Graduation is very properly called Commencement. You begin to make your choices and decisions in the Light of that Faith. Moreover you, the Class of 1953, have the distinction and privilege of forming the twentyfsixth and last graduating class of St. .lean's High School. In 1954 your successors will be an important part of Catholic Central High School of Greater Muskegon. In imita- tion of those who have gone before them at St. Jean's may they take with them the tradi- tions of service and loyalty to their Country, to their Church and to their God as taught by their teachers, the good Sisters of Mercy and the priests of the Parish. To you, the Class of 1953, may God walk with you and help you always to make the right choices. May Mary show her patronage to every one of you--during life, at death and after death. , K! Before dashing out into a world of bouquets and baseball bats, graduation presents and the sling and arrows of outrageous employers, vacations and vocations, a little reminiscing is in line of our years spent as students of St. Jean. Q This school gave us years of companionship with Catholic girls and boysg the friendship of a devoted group of Catholic teachers who taught that religion is the blueprint for success in life. A more fully developed love of books and reading was fostered and continued. We learned to think and act when faced with a problem. This school pointed out the safe and relatively serene paths to success. Now we hope to develop these means of success and remember with appreciation their origin in our lives- St. Jean High School. - Valerie Dion 10 HAROLD THEODORE BULLERMAN lB40 Crowley Street He worked, he plodded, he graduated. The new Greater Muskegon Catholic Central, located on Barclay and Laketon, as it nears completion for the opening, in September 1953, for approximately 800 students of Greater Muskegon and vicinity. Sulutatorian . . . On this day which is the culmination of our high school scholastic efforts, we salute in a very special way our parents, who brought to our minds the importance of a Catholic education, our Pastor, who saw to it that we received a Catholic education, and our Teachers, who planned those lessons which complete a Catholic education. As graduation day passes, we realize as we go into the world where there is so much hate and contempt, that the guidance of the Religious Sisters of Mercy has enabled us to face the fu- ture with Christian fortitude. To all who have aided our spiritual or material advancement in any way, we say Thank you for everything. We will take our place in the world possessed of the principles of our Catholic faith taught here in our Alma Mater. DONNA FAUCHER . . . Valedictorian Christ, our goal, Mary, our model .... As our high school life closes and one by one we follow the pathways of life, we will always carry with us the motto we adopted as freshmen. Our Christian homes and parents, through lov- ing care and sacrifice, together with our pastors alert with spiritual concern and the ever-interested faculty guiding scholastic and extra-curricular ac- tivities all figured largely in the development of our Christian character. Now as the school doors close behind us and we set out into life leaving behind the protection of our parents and teachers, we reflect thought- fully upon the motto that guided us through high school. Mary, as ever, will be enshrined as model throughout the rest of our lifetime. SHIRLEY TIGHE Sclraol life . . . A visit to the State Capitol followed the seniors' attendance at the annual Journalism Day held at Michigan State College. Mrs. Ross chaperoned the group. A most valuable asset is Christ-like training for a Christian democracy. This has been our heritage. Here we were given the opportunity to receive Christian instructiong here we have been trained to evaluate current conditions, and we have been given opportunities for participation in activities which gives us the priceless back- ground for the future. 33 Co-prefects of the Sodality, Donna Faucher and Dick Ross, light the candle while the entire student body consecrates their activities to Christ the King. After a series of games on home ground, the mighty Eagles travel to Walkerville to play off What a Basketball Season means to Us . . . After all the games are played, schedules completed, letters distributed, and congratulations meted out to the de- serving, equipment stored away, when all is said and done and perhaps forgotten, one thing will always remain-the kind of character that results from a season of competition and sportsmanship in basketball. And that is the one thing that all of us here at St. Jean have been primarily interested in. Developing character is the reason for the schedule, t-he games, the stiff competition, the cheering, the wins and losses. The entire basketball season is focused at one point-Catholic character in our young men and women. REV. ERNEST BERNOTT ATHLETIC DIRECTOR. I feel sure that our '52-'53 basketball season has accom- plished this aim in large measure. lt was grand to see the fine school spirit, people have admired the fine sportsmanship throughout the season of competition. I was particularly impressed with the good behavior on the part of the student body and the athletes, your Pastor was happy to see an increase in the reception of the sacraments. These items add up to Catholic Christian character, and we are proud of it. One last word: Our wins or losses will soon be forgotten, but character continues into our future lives and on into eternity. Continue to proiect into your future lives the lessons of character that come from a season of basketball competition, That is the kind of equipment that will contribute to a future happy life, and make for a preparation for Heaven. Father Ernest J. Bernott 51 Second Team . . . Kneeling: James Howell, Thomas Cloud, Louis Zaloga, Robert Maieski. Standing: Bah Bergbower, David Kelly, Coach Roy Cioe, James Fouts, Anthony Cote. Viv.. l E I f Y The Pens Write On . . . I Before we finally close the door in the senior assem- bly we look around the room for perhaps the last time. We see how neat it is and remember the hectic days before this Yearbook went to press. The big desk up in front, was, at times so littered with papers there was no place to write or even sit. The hurried conferences and last min- ute changes, the noise of thirty-one seniors all with terrific new ideas. Then frenzied rush to get those cut-lines written l and captions typed. All is quiet now. The big desk is cleared of everything. No absolute deadlines . . . No one is yelling, l've got an idea! The room is empty but the memories still cling to the walls . . . the walls which enclosed us as we put this, the final edition of our yearbook, the Profile, to press. We, the co-editors, wish to thank sincerely all those who, through their cooperation and patronage, have made this, the last high school publication from Saint Jean's High School possible. For the past twenty-five years the Pastors and their assistants, together with the Sisters of Mercy, have helped, admonished, sympathized and prayed for us and our pred- ecessors. They have always shown a helpful interest in the school publications. So the staff of 1953 takes this opportunity to thank , them for everything they have done to make their students Catholic press-conscious men and women. PEGGY HEATON DICK CARTIER Co-editors l l 80
