Accordingly, on the evening of October twelfth and following upon the joy of a wonderful parish banquet, we presented Joy for the World, a pageant in honor of Mary written by Father Daniel A. Lord, S. J. Joy for the World is a colorful dramatization in dialogue, pan- tomime, and song of the triumph of Mary over our Adversary, the devil. The victory, predicted by the Almighty at the dawn of time and described for us step by step in the dialogue between Gabriel and the Adversary, begins at the Annunciation when, by consenting freely to the dignity of Christian womanhood intended for her from the beginning by the Creator. As we follow Mary through scene after scene of her life and that of her Divine Son, we become more and more convinced that it is her powerful intercession that keeps the evil one in chains. When, at last, the Adversary is forced to retreat, after the apparition at Fatima, we find ourselves turning to Mary and acclairning her Queen of Heaven and Earth. ra QSFH' ff M., Sr 5 1 ...,, ,- , l4 , .-., iii, ' - ,,.A'xf-, Q' . 4 Qiiggaigjy -Qfa' BQ fx- , : -at .N,f4, A Triumphant March Many times since the evening of October thi- twelfth we, from the higher grades, have heard favorable Comments about the pageant, Joy for the World. Thus bragged the Adversary and, Ronald Contos, as Slave Driver, seems to fulfill that devilish boost as he whips slave dancer, Darlene Lessard into a final, fatal twirl while her slave companions, Joan Karlen, Eileen Adameak, Lois Shykes, Jean Price, Kathleen Morrisey, and Marilyn Karlen plead in vain for mercy. New hope comes to the world with the Annun- ciation but even as Gabriel delivers his heavenly message, the Adversary plans to thwart God's designs by reminding the Virgin Qlvlarilyn Kishelj of her vow of virginity and of the sorrows that await the Mother ofthe Mes- sias. From Heaven. angels, Sandra Cartier, Agnes Shykes, Evelyn Wallace, Bonnie Mc- Mahon, Darlene Gas- kell, Diane Roginski, Betty Kellar, Winifred Kranz, Susan Brother- ton, and Claudia Depre, anxiously await the out- come ofthe argument. In it we are guided, gently but firmly up the right path To Jesus Through Mary. This goal inspires in us a sense of duty to God, to our neighbor, and to ourselves. Personal holiness is greatly stressedg this includes daily rosary, medi- tation, and examination of conscience. In whatever vo- cation we choose, we shall not forget these things, for they are the traits which we carry with us through life on into eternity. The administration of the Sodality rests upon the combined efforts of the Director, Rev. Father La- freniere, O. M. I., Moderator, Rev. Sister Angeline Marieg officers, and committee chairmen. Thus we all work together toward achievement of deep spir- itual and social perfection. One of the most active roups in the Duluth- Cloquet Deanery, our Sodagity walked off with the White Ribbon, the highest award presented at the Sodality convention in May of 1954. A glance at the 1955 chronicle will show that we are again among the top contenders for this year's presentation. And yet, we strive to remember that awards such as these are mere tokens, the real awards for zealous work will come when we are received into Heaven, happy guests of the Divine Host and His Immaculate Hostess. Mfioers Examining new pamphlets are left: Marlys Brotherton, Winifred Kranz, Janice Brotherton, Claudia Hampston, Delores Mc!-Iale, and Joan Karlen. Shortly after school opened they scheduled a day for Mass -Qyog and Holy Communion for the entire class to ask the help of Our Lord and Our Lady in all their undertakings of the coming year This spiritual event was soon followed by another. The Juniors staged a successful Marian Year pilgrimage on Sunday, October 31. With heaven1y assistance such as this, it's no wonder that their Halloween Social was a great success. Of course, the Juniors work, too. In Religion class they find the study of the Mass all absorbing, discovering the true meanings behind Latin phrases, under the careful guidance of Sister Jane Teresa. ln English, a literary vein has shown up. Anxious authors of one-act plays, are they. Creating, directing and producing-a Junior all-in-one package. ln addition to this program, will be the traditional Junior - Senior Picnic or 'something. We were cautioned to use the word something by the Junior Class Vice President, who seems to have plans of his own on this score. The air of my- stery only intensifies our curiosity, Jerry. A fine spirit such as this, deserves our prediction of SUCCESS, all capitals, mind you, in both this and their Senior year. Oh no-- all the students did not fail: Sister was finally promoted after 15 years in the ninth grade. Seriously, Sister seems delighted to be their teacher for another year. And once the word gets around that The Mellotones are playing we no longer worry about the attendance. In accord with the French theme of La Grande Soiree, we chose a French Band. The Mellotones, therefore, conde- scended to let us change their names to Jacques and His Troubadours. Topped by the magic touch of the keyboard, a real Parisian effect was created. Our thanks to you, Andy, from all the Seniors of 1955. SENIOR RICHARD SIVEN Artist by nature, and worker by good nature, Dick Siven designed 50 beautiful Fleur-de-Lis for the Seniors Social. An Evening to lleme her NOW IS THE FUN! ALL'S LEFT 'La Grande Soiree' With the opening of the auditorium doors at 9:00 on November 23, those who entered were swept away from their otherwise routine existence into a world that was Continental, exciting, and completely unique On this evening, the Seniors presented La Grande Soiree, a Parisian promenade. The cabaret setting was colorfully car- ried out in Cerise, French Blue, and Yellow Dreamy music came from the Rue de La Paix where Jacques and His Troubadours fotherwise known as The Mellotonesj had assembled. Even the least imaginative of those who attended found themselves caught up in the web of atmosphere and transported to a world of gaiety and romance. Long after the crepe paper is stored away and our City of Dreams has vanished leaving only a bleak auditorium, memories of a magic night on the shores of the River Seine will linger on. Juniors preparing decorations Drawing one of the largest crowds ever seen at St. Jean's, the Junior Class spon- sored the first social event of the school year, which they aptly termed The Autumn Hop. Oran e and black decorations set the scheme in which fal colors were dominant. Big tawny leaves Xxx' sparkled from the stage reminding us that Halloween was just around the corner. Although at this time of the year it is customary to find spooks and goblins lurking about, and possi- bly a black cat or two, the Juniors played host to none of these. Instead we found the ha py faces of former graduates as well as most of the present student body twirling about the dance floor, cast under the spell of the evening. When the clock struck twelve and the crowd began to scatter, we felt reluctant to leave this bewitching place, knowing that it would haunt our memories. Every year at this time, when the leaves take on a tawny hue, the pumpkin crop is harvested and witches fly about, we shall think of The Autumn Hop, the Juniors' way of saying Hello to Autumn. .llniors Entertain Philosophers Jerome Noldin rehearsing A singing invitation and a reply of the same type led to a very enjoyable afternoon given by the Junior Class in honor of the Seniors, Philosophers of the school, on the feast of St. Catherine who is the patron saint of philosophers. The program began with a welcome and an expla nation of the ro ram b the Junior Class President, P Y Joan Werschey. gfhis was followed by the Class Prophecy in which the Seniors of 1955 turned up in the oldest professions imaginable. Jerry Noldin pleased us by two trumpet solos which added im- measurably to the festivities. Two one-act plays written, directed and produced by the Juniors-- were also presented. This, we feel, was uite an achievement since few of those who actualtly took part have had experience along such lines. The whole affair was brought to a climax by the presentation of graduation caps. The Seniors were so delighted with these that they continued to wear them throughout the entire afternoon.
