Lower School Becomes Non-Graded System The St. James Lower School started a new experience this January when it went non-graded. Now students of the former Fifth and Sixth grades work and study together in the same rooms. Each student is grouped according to his aloility, instead of age. The boys like this new way ot learning and hope that it will continue next year. Mr. Douglas directs a class in a unit on advertising. During the winter some St. Mary's girls helped with reading. Jamies enjoy Variety of Classes The class schedule at St. James is varied and offers the students everything from Earth Science, to world history, to French. Each student in the Upper School takes five classes including science, math, social studies, English, and French. 12 Mr. Erickson helps Matt Brovvn during study hall. Eighth graders listen to a French tape. nnmnnmmw f Lower School boys read a book in their lounge urea Special Classes, Testing at St. James St. James has a very good testing and re- medial section as part of its regular aca- demic offerings. Special classes are offered in language retraining, in remedial read- ing, and in remedial math. In addition a complete testing schedule is followed with intelligence and aptitude tests administer- ed in the Fall and in the Spring. Individual intelligence tests are also given. Mrs. Huston gives Glenn Widman the WISC, an intelligence test. Tom Barthel is helped in math by Mrs. Kangas. Contests for the best pumpkin and the best costumes were held, cider and donuts and other goodies were consumed in large amounts, and a double feature horror movie topped oft the events. Boys Organize Band Called Kreed Kreed was tormecl last tall by several boys who had been playing Together since school started and by Mr. Ebel who directs the band. Kreed has gone all out to attain the image ot a rock band - including uniforms, pictures, and to be put out this spring - an album. Woodworking Shop Now Available for All Boys Something new this year has been the addition of a shop for boys from all grades to work in and make proiects. Mr. Douglas and Mr. Warrick have been managing the shop and the equipment has been donated by many parents and friends of St. James. The shop is open every Tuesday and Thursday after- noon and on weekends, when one of the faculty members can be dragged in. Wrestling Group Enjoys New Room The St. James wrestling group moved into new quarters when the gym was completed this fall. They also had a brand new mat to practice on. With Mr. Douglas as coach, they learned the basic holds and moves. They also had help from some ot the Shattuck wrestlers. The team had one meet - against Lonsdale which they won 24-19. ,.....-..? Knights Place Second in Tri-County League St. James' Knights placed second in the newly formed Tri-County League this year, after a slow start at the beginning of the season. Probably the most exciting games were the Mardi Gras game during which the Knights defeated Lonsdale 44-23, and the semi-finals of the Tri-County tournament in which St. James beat St. Dominic's ot Northfield 4l-39 in the last seconds of play. ' I Winter Activities Many, Interesting The .lamies enjoyed oi variety of winter activities to go along with the usual winter sports. Included in this was gymnastics with Mr. Warrick supervising on some ot the new St. James equip- ment. Skiing was also an interest among some of the boys. Highlighting the end of the winter was the Student-Faculty basketball game and the winter sports banquet at which winter awards were given. Included are canoeing, golf, tennis, baseball, soccer, and general loaf- ing. Many boys are good at general loafing. Activities go on five days a week, with sporting events like baseball games in competition with other schools in the area. Spring soccer practice. Canoeing can be confusing, can't it? It was printed on Velcoat Offset paper, using the offset method. Typefaces used in this book include 6, 8, 10, and 18 point futura for cutlines, body copy, and headlines. The Cover for the 1971 Knight was manufactured by the Dahl Company of Minneapolis, Minnesota. The design is from a photograph of Old Main, the main classroom building, produced by Modern Printers. The book was also bound at Dahl. Photographs include work by both students and fac- ulty members. Todd l-leilicher served as maior student photographer.
