SAINTONIAN Published By The Saintonian Staff Saint James High School Saint James, Minnesota Co Editors In Chief: Kim Sinclair Laurel Vanderbilt Advisors: Milton Wetzel Margaret Pennings 3 ACTIVITIES Mike Brandts Lori Miller Randy Nessler Lisa Wilkening Pam Viland Amy Rasmussen Jill Blanchfield Marvin Augustin Paul Schmidt Greg Windschill Brian Moulton Alice Kading 5 HOMECOMING Losing Is For The Birds Your attention please, we have checked with the Sioux Falls and Minneapolis weather bureaus and the rain is to continue until tomorrow. Although the homecoming festivities ended somewhat under the weather , the spirit of the week of October 3-8 reached a peak at Tuesday night's coronation when Marvin Augustin and Pam Vi land were chosen as the 1977 king and queen. The seniors and the sophomores were triumphant in the powderpuff competition with identical scores of 8-0. Spirits were dampened slightly by the postponement of tne home- coming parade and game. Despite the res- cheduling, it continued to rain on our pa- rade. The sophomores took 1st place, seniors 2nd in the float contest. Saturday night brought disappointment and sadness to the football team and fans, as the Saints lost to the Fairmont Cardinals 17- 2. ABOVE: Pam Viland screams with amazement as she is crowned queen. LEFT: Queen Pam and King Marvin read the royal in- vitation to all Homecoming activities as Laurel Van- derbilt looks on. TOP: Laurel Vanderbilt emcee, announces the royal party. MIDDLE: Pages, Paul Schmidt and Amy Rasmussen, begin the royal procession. 7 Coach Rasmussen and his wife very willingly take part in the cheerleaders skit. The drizzle stopped late Saturday afternoon so the parade and the game went on as re-scheduled. Our hatless Marching Saints lead the parade and Co-Captain Rory Pletsch leads the Football Saints onto the field after half- time. Coach Rasmussen gives a bit of advice to quarterback, Greg St. John. 8 Queen Pam and her attendants agonize over the play of their beloved Saints on the football field. With countless juniors in hot pursuit senior Linda Landsteiner (22) runs for the only touchdown of the game. ABOVE: The prize-winning sophomore float urges the Saints to Royally Flush the Cards. SENIOR CLASS PLAY The Sound Of Music” Captivates Audience After hours of rehearsal, most of which were punctuated by wrong lines, missed entrances, flat notes and Director Girton's inevitable rantings, the Class of 178's version of The Sound of Music was a hit when presented on Nov. 8-12, 1977. The hard work paid off when the show was deemed a success by cast and audience alike. Volunteer Work Proves Rewarding Since their organization in 1966 the Can- dystripers have made their presence felt in the community and the 1977-78 season was no exception. These dedicated civil servants assisted at the Bloodbank. They helped by notifying potential donors and babysitting the children of those who came to give blood. At the annual Baby Tea, the Candystripers were once again utilized as sitters for the small fry. Besides their reg- ular volunteer work at Pleasant View Home, Watonwan Memorial Hospital and Park Apartments, the Candystripers also participated in the Christmas Party and other special activities at Pleasant View. The residents enjoyed the life and fun the girls added to their celebrations. Candystripers recite their pledge at one of their monthly meetings. O.E.A. Advisor Mr. Dalen hangs the club's banner. The organization was kept busy throughout the course of the year with District-Re- gion-State contests and other important meetings related to office education. The girls also helped during the wrestling sea- son in the concession stand. Some lighter events of the year included a Christmas dinner party at the Hickory Inn where gifts were exchanged, and a spring outing. SAINTS REPORTER Paper Keeps Students Informed Always concerned with meeting deadlines and writing the best possible stories, the Saints Reporter Staff was kept busy with the monthly publications of the school pa- per. For the reader's entertainment, there was a feature page, which contained many interesting fact and fiction articles, in- cluding the Remember when's .. and Joel Neisen's School Surveys. The sport page was another highlight of the paper, especially when Jim Veglahn printeci what became a famous line during tne basketball season, calling the Butterfield Indians Hicks. With the help of advisor Pat Branstad and editor Amy Porter, the Saints Reporter an its staff enjoyed a run and re- warding year. Editor Amy Porter is flanked by page heads Lori Schultz and Randy Schultz. 17 SAINTONIAN Annual Staff Preserves Memories Although plagued by the usual problems of hurried writing to make deadlines, the 1977-78 Annual Staff once again pulled their forces together to deliver this publi- cation to the waiting public. Under the competent co-leadership of Kim Sinclair and Laurel Vanderbilt, and advi- sors Mr. Wetzel and Miss Pennings, the annual staff chose pictures, wrote stories, met deadlines, planned layouts, decided on headlines, wrote more stories, planned more pages, met deadlines, measured pic- tures, tried to meet deadlines, deadlines, dead____ Besides their dedication for preserving each year for posterity, the staff raised money by running the concession stand. They satisfied the thirsty mind as well as the hungry stomach!! Responsibility for producing the SAINTONIAN lies with Miss Pennings and Mr. Wetzel, the advisors, and Laurel Vanderbilt and Kim Sinclair, the co-editors. THE SAINTONIAN PRODUCTION STAFF: D. Henke, M. Grundman, I. Peterson, T. Heckman, K. Peterson, R. Stradtman, K. Robbins, D. Henke, D. Panzer, P. Ronnei, B. Stevens, P. Hansen, and L. Wilkening. 18 THE BUSINESS STAFF: L. Schultz, D. Johnson, K. Robbins, L. Lofgren, N. Pierson, M. Mayberry, V. Todnem, M. Schultz, L. Nelson. Identifying and laying out pictures is a major chore for Karen, Renee, and Donna of the Annual Staff. 'Twas the day before deadline And all was not right. Not a creature was stirring, Not even a mite. We editors screamed At the top of our lungs, Sponsor! Dear Sponsor! What can be done? We can't find the pictures, The photographers are gone, The darkroom is flooded — This just can't go on! Late into the night We worked(until day), Got the annual finished, And sent it away. -Erin Muths- Jackson, Wyoming 19 FFA President twenty-five years ago was Richard Hunstad. FFA-GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY A Golden Past- A Brighter Future 1977-78 was not only the 50th anniver- sary of the founding of the Natonal FFA organization but it was a special year for the St. James chapter who celebrated their 25th silver anniversary year. At the chap- ter's anniversary banquet, president and advisors from the past 25 years attended. A history of achievements and highlights of the chapter was presented by Mr. Busch. Activities throughout the year included the National Convention, FFA week, corn drive for Camp Courage, Children's Barn- yard at the Watonwan County Fair, State Convention, and the Parent-Member Ban- quet. They sponsored the first dance of the year as a fundraiser, and they sent delegates to both the District and State FHA Conventions. The first Region- al Action Events Contest was sponsored by the St. James chapter. Deb Johnson re- ceived statewide recognition as one of the top ten salespeople in the state of Minne- sota. She won $100 for selling 70 Helpful Hints booklets. To celebrate FHA week, March 13-17, members sold Shamrocks for Dystrophy and the offi- cers greeted the student body each morning with the daily announcements. Besides the menu for the day the FHAer's added some food for thought with a special saying. Randy Lantz won the title of FHA beau, and the FHA hosted a faculty breakfast. Performances includ ed the pops concert, Christmas concert, tour, home- coming concert, spring concert, and graduation. The tour brought the choir north to Canada, with stops in Duluth and Two Harbors. The members stayed in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and performed for two colle- geates. The Limited Edition, Boys Octet, and the State Reflections also made numerous appearances throughout the year. The madrigals eased on down to a number of contests and took second place at Man- kato State and also did well at Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa. District and region contests were suc- cessful for the soloists and ensembles with many well- deserved stats. The Concert Choir faired well at the large group contestant at Mapleton, earning three out of three stats. 23 THE CONCERT CHOIR 24 RIGHT: BOY'S OCTET: J. Petersen, J. Un- derdahl, B. Moulton, K. They also performed at the State Fair. The fall of 1977 found the band at football games, the Augustana College, homecoming pa- rade, and the annual Harvest Holiday Pops concert. The Band Boosters, hop- ing to promote more cultural entertainment, hosted the famous drummer, Buddy Rich, in a full concert and also the Augustana College Band. Band members spent the winter months working on the Midwinter Band Concert and district contests. The instrumentalists were highly rewarded by receiving many stars at district and region contests. Springtime performances includ- ed region-state contests, the spring con- cert, and commencement. DECLAM-ONE ACT PLAY Declam Team Gains Quantity And Quality Declamation enjoyed a resurge of interest and participation in the 1977-78 school year. Coaches Jan Berndt and Don Plum- hoff were pleased with the 15 young ora- tors who participated in 9 of 11 possible catagories. The District Meet at Lake Crystal proved to be a glorious and victori- ous day for the Saints, who won first place. The team sent 9 people and 4 al- ternates to regional competition. Justin Levido, a foreign exchange student from Australia, became a first alternate to the state meet for his entry in Original Orato- ry. Declamation requires a lot of talent and work and the team from St. James proved they had both. One Act Play, directed by Don Plumhoff, had a good if not spectacular season. Their enaction of Will You Join Me for Dinner? , a drama, won them a first place rating at subdistrict. Their luck ran out at district competition when they failed to place. In spite of that, they aid a good job! One Act Play: C. Eppland, K. Thompson, R. Thomp- son, L. Gundlach. The Juniors anticipated what had to be done for weeks. The girls searched for the most beautiful dresses and talked excitedly about every de- tail. A few weeks later the orders for tuxedos had to be in. Then came the decorating of the gym. The juniors set up the wire, moved lad- ders and hung each colored ribbon while talk- ing and laughing. The working nights went fast but somehow the gym was finished. Come Sail Away was the theme and scenes of sailboats and seawaves filled the gym. The greenhouses were packed with orders. Satur- day of the Prom, April 29, was the longest day of the year for some. The girls primped, the guys tackled their ruffled shirts until the time came to pick up their dates. Ninety- Five couples arrived at the banquet ana filled their queezy stomachs with delicious food. Grand March began at 8:15 with OPUS fur- nishing excellent music. The Saints losses were close, well contested ball games. The year will be remembered as an extremely wet one, with most of the games being played under very poor field conditions. Highlights of the year included the annual fat spinning drill, Brad Ahrenstorff block- ing for the offense, while he was on de- fense, and the K.O. of Ron Ankeny. All Conference awards were given to Greg Windschill, Greg St. John, Mark Flohrs, and Rory Pietsch. Two Runners Place In The State Meet The cross country team was very sluggish at the beginning of the season this year but after a few weeks of hard training under coach Don Hanson, they made noticeable improvement. In their first meet at the Mountain Lake Invitational the team placed 9th out of 16 teams. In the region, though, they were 4th, beating Mt. Lake who was 3rd in the Mt. Lake Invitational. Co-captains, Jerry High and Joel Zender, led the team to a district win and then went on to place 10th and 12th respectively in the state meet. The team closed the season with an 8-5 dual meet record, placed 8th in the Worth- ington Turkey Trot, led by High's second place finish, and were 4tn in the Confer- ence meet. VOLLEYBALL Girls Play With Much Enthusiasm An enthusiastic girls' volleyball team was headed by Coach Sharon Euerle and co- captains, Linda Stretch Landsteiner and Julie Curry. As the season progressed many valuable experiences were gained. Stretch and Swival Hips Lofgren commented that beating the Blue Earth and Worthington squads were the most reward- ing victories. Other highlights of the sea- son included getting lost in Mankato and the locker room scenes. Losing the second game in district competition brought disap- pointment to the girls. Overall, the season was successful. The girls compiled a 9-7 record and a conference record of 4-2. VARSITY VOLLEYBALL: ROW 1: K. Hawke, B. Reinke, M. Toussaint, J. Mays, J. The Saints came back at the end of the season to win the District 6 Championship and to compete in the Region 2 team dual competition. The bright spots of the season included a sec- ond place in the Hutchinson tourney and the District 6 tournaments victory. The team was lead by co-captains Marvin Au- gustin and Dave Sturm. Marvin set a new career record of 98 wins. Steve Stle at 155 pounds, ended his excellent season by qualifying for the state but failed to compete due to a knee injury received in Region 2 individuals tournament. They put programs together, made posters, filled out wall charts, kept score, and took tickets. Their favorite job was kissing the winners of each weight at the big tournaments! The girls worked hard and did a fine job. Their help was much appreciated by the coaches and wrestlers. The Letterwinners Club sponsored a Spring Athletic Banquet and sold candy to raise funds. Scholarships were awarded to Ber- nie Reinke and Marv Augustin. Anyone who has earned an athletic letter is eligi- ble to belong to the club. ABOVE RIGHT: Letter Winners Officers: M. Augustin, G. He ended his reign with a total of 387 wins and 277 losses including the 1977-78 record of 16 wins-7 losses. The team surprised many skeptics by going all the way to the region finals before bow- ing out to Butterfield-Odin. Leading the way for the Saints was two-time most valuable player Mike Brandts who led in scoring, rebounds, and dunks. He was also selected on the South Central All- Conference team. Many other players con- tributed heavily to the prosperity of the team. Randy Nessler had slick hands and quick feet. He could also handle a basket- ball. The two Gregs, Windschill and St. John, were the team eggheads, both A stu- dents, but you'd never know it on the court! GIRLS' BASKETBALL Girls Win A Few Enjoy Alot If enjoying the game of basketball is evi- dence of success, the 1977-78 girls basketball team was very successful, am- bitious, and on occasion, this carried over into the ball game! Bernie Reinke, the teams leading scorer, was constantly caught stealing from other schools but it turned out to be their basketball she was after. Karen Bakke and Brenda Curry con- tinued an old elementary school tradition of cleaning the boards and did it most effi- ciently. Linda Landsteiner was our best communicator-being in frequent contact with opponents-and Diane Bergquist dis- proved the myth that there is no such thing as a perpetual motion machine. Coach Lar- son observed that if the girls had done ev- erything they were told, they wouldn've won every game. Due to hearing defects, the team finished 3-14 on the year. The coach did admit, however, that there was not a more coachable group of people that he had ever met and that true success is measured, not in victories, but in affec- tion. Dedicated Gymnasts Have A Fine Season The St. James gymnastics team enjoyed the most successful season in history with an 11-3 record. Highlighting the season was a second place finish in the South Central Conference to finish above a very strong New Ulm team for the first time ever. The entire team was able to advance to sectionals after a second place finish in the sub-sectional meet. This meet brought out the best in the girls as they scored the most points ever by a St. James team in the sub-sectional meet, 94.74 points. Sophomore, Debbie Flaata, led the Saints as high scorer for the season, was voted most valuable by her teammates, and ad- vanced to the regional meet in uneven bars and all-around competition. High scores in each area were Deb Flaata in floor ex. and bars, Kris Wolle on beam and Mary Sturm in vaulting. Micky Toussaint received the team spirit award. SAINTETTES Dancers Show Grace And Style Beginning with a dance camp in the summer and hot practices in August, to the State danceline competition in April, the Sain- tettes had a busy season. With the help of their new advisor, Nita Onnen, and Co-captains Kathy Fjermestad and Lehne Nelson, the Saintettes suc- cessfully danced at football, volleyball, girls' and boys' basketball, and wrestling events. The Girls kep in tip-top shape by having suppertime practices twice a week. New ideas were picked up along the way, with drill movements and jazz styles in- cluded in their numbers. Mama Mia was a favorite of the girls and their audiences. Extra performances for them included the Hutchinson wrestling tourney, a danceline clinic in Fridley, St. Paul Winter Carni- val, and State Danceline competition. The girls were among the top ten aancelines of Class A State competition. 57 Row 1: R. Ankeny, T. Ytterboe, M. Sturm, K. Warner, J. Branstad, D. Ask, Row 2: K. Fjermstad, G. Kurtzweg, N. Onnen, D. Under the guidence of Pam Vi land, Chris Beckman and Alice McGlynn, and Mr. Krueger, the A,B, and C Cheerleading squads enjoyed a fun and industrious year. All Squads started practicing in the sum- mer, to be in shape for the fall sports. Lockers were decorated and posters hung in the halls to show support. 100 hours were put into Homecoming activities itself! The varisty squad rotated, 6 cheering at home and 4 away. An average week during the winter season would consist of 3 to 4 nights of cheering for some of the girls. Nancy Olson, under the strain of her heavy schedule, attempted to change the school colors after forgetting her bloomers and having to borrow some from Windom, mak- ing her bottom red, white, black, and blue. Pepfests were major concernsCcheer- ing in from of the entire student body and faculty would make anyone nervous!) But after a few of Mr. Krueger's jokes and peptalks, everyone was put at ease and ready to fire up the teams. TOP: B SQUAD CHEERLEADERS: From the front; K. Henslin, D. Anderson, L. Ask, J. Under Don no pain, no gain Hanson and co-captains Jerry High and Brian Moulton, the Saints started out the season willing two out of three indoor meets at Mankato State. This included the indoor Conference meet. The dual meet season record was 3-3. Big meets includ- ed the Fairmont Sentinal Relays, the Es- terville Relays, and the annual St. James Olympiad. Rain changed this meet from Friday to Monday, and not all the teams invited could come back to participate. But, the Saints were as fired up as ever and won first place for the fifth straight year. In outdoor conference action St. James took third place. Rory Pietsch was given a trophy for most points accumulated at this meet. At the District meet at Made- lia, the Saints took first, with a number of individuals and relays headed for the re- gion. Distance runners must be very dedicated to their specialty, and Jerry High is showing that it pays off by leading the field. TRACK SQUAD-Row 1: K. Knickerem, B. Borchardt, D. Brandts, T. Coached by Mrs. Eggen, the team won their own Olym- pia, and finished second in the indoor and outdoor conference meets. A very young but determined team showed steady im- provement. School records were set and reset. New school records were set by Sue Eng in the 440, Brenda Janzen in the 2 mile, Sue Augustin in the mile, and the 880 relay team consisting of Pam John- son, Bernie Reinke, Diane Berquist, and Judy Moulton. Brenda Janzen and the 880 relay team also set new South Central Conference marks. In the District Meet at Madelia, the girls proved their strength and speed by whip- ping the other teams and clinching first place. They took 13 of 15 places and many of the girls went to the Region meet at Blue Earth. JbSL Judy Moulton shows her school record form on the hur- dles. C i GIRLS' TRACK SQUAD-ROW 1: D. Fiaata, V. The team placed second in District action, while Trent Nelson and Terry Koch won second and fourth place medals. Nelson, Koch, and Mark Swenson went to the Region where the team got fourth place. In sub-sectional action, Dave Haler was the only singles player to advance to the sectional tournament. The doubles team consisting of Kris Lastine and Randy Schultz also made it to the sectionals, but none of the boys went on from there. In ad- dition to Haler, Lastine, and Schultz, other letterwinners included Jeff Schmitz, the only senior on the team, Mitch Doll, Craig Shellum, Kevin Jakooe and John Panzer. BOYS TENNIS-ROW 1: N. Leading the team were four sen- iors, the only upperclassmen on the team. The Gold-dust Twins, Randy Nessler and Jim Petersen, provided a solid left side of the infield and big bats. Foxer Nelson and Greg St. Beat did the majoriy of the pitching, using two and half tons of Cra- mergesic in the process. One of the lead- ing batters of the year was Todd Schmidtke, whose ability to beat out in- field hits was surpassed only by Jay Esser, Mike Kohn, and Jim Veglahn, the team's gazelles. Doug Hagen was like fly- paper in left field and Bill Coleman did not pull the ball to the left of the infield all year. In District action the Saints won their first two games over Minnesota Lake and Janesville, before falling to Truman 5-3 in the finals. Jay Esser is ready for action at first base. A SQUAD-ROW 1: D. Timo Kantola, from Vitasaari, Finland, comes from a family of two broth- ers and two step sisters. He has enjoyed his stay in the U.S., with particular inter- est in ping pong, ice hockey, and politics. Timo has his senior year left in Finland. He plans to study economics and politics. In two years he hopes to come back and study at Mankato State College. Our other exchange student was Justin Levido, from Cesshock, Australia. He comes from a rather large family of four brothers and one sister. Justin enjoys reading, World Af- fairs, the Cinema, and running. He leaves in January and will attend the Australian National University in Canberra. He plans to study political science, international relations, and languages. Best of luck to both Timo and Justin. Having exchange students also allows our students to learn of life in other parts of the world. Here, Justin gives Lau- rel some Australian study tips. Our newest foreign exchange student is Justin Levido Timo Kantola, a Finnish exchange student, spent the year of Australia. as a Senior at St. James. 90 Left: Laurel Vanderbilt and Lori Miller headed the Foreign Festival this winter. With them are exchange students from Sweden and Norway. Below: Taking pictures of everyone and every- thing is common among all exchange students. 91 Foreign exchange students who attended the Foreign Festival at St. James were reunited once again at Boys' and Girls' County. Included are Justin and Timo. ■ CLASS OF 78 Seniors Face The Future With Hope Remembering our high school days — fresh- men being pushed into the mature world of Sr. High, excitement of first football games, Homecoming, and pepfests, awaiting the hot lunch call by Mrs. Crowley, skipping classes and not getting caught, wishing for a blizzard the day your unfinished term paper is due, adjusting to the hot and cold tempera- tures of every room, Ivceums, band and choir concerts and trips; all made being a student of St. James High School a unique exper- ience! How appropriate to call graduation a com- mencement. For it is not an ending, but a beginning. One is now ready to move onward to the work of a lifetime. Not what is fin- ished, but what yet remains to be achieved is the emphasis of greaduation day. Invitingly ahead lies a wonderful future, and opportuni- ty lures one onward. How thrilling to be young and eagerly looking forward with a heart full of excitement!
